Adding AI speech starts with an architecture decision: use a realtime speech-to-speech interface for live conversation, or connect separate speech recognition, language-model, and speech-synthesis stages. The right fit depends on turn-taking, latency, the need to inspect intermediate text, client transport, and operating constraints—not on a universal ranking of accuracy or quality.
Choose between realtime speech and a staged pipeline
These patterns solve overlapping but distinct problems. A realtime interface can accept and return audio within an ongoing conversation; a staged pipeline handles speech recognition, language-model inference, and speech generation as separate steps.
Realtime speech-to-speech
A realtime multimodal API receives audio and returns audio through an ongoing session. OpenAI documents realtime interfaces using WebRTC, WebSocket, and SIP in its Realtime API reference. This is a natural option to investigate when the product needs conversational turn-taking or spoken responses without treating every exchange as a separate file-processing job.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBecause more of the interaction sits within one realtime interface, consider what the chosen API exposes for intermediate text, session behavior, interruptions, and observability. Those details affect how you debug and control the experience.

Staged audio pipeline
A staged design recognizes speech into text, passes the text to a language model, then synthesizes a spoken reply. OpenAI describes this as an earlier voice-assistant pattern and presents realtime speech-to-speech as an alternative in its Realtime API announcement.
Separate stages make the handoffs and components explicit. That can suit workflows where you need to inspect or retain recognized text, or where speech input and spoken output are independent features. It also means coordinating each stage, its errors, and the transitions between them.
Neither architecture is established as universally faster or more accurate by the cited documentation. Compare them against your own requirements and representative test conditions.

Match the architecture to the job
Start with what the user is doing, then consider the interaction and operational requirements.
- Live conversation: assess realtime speech-to-speech when users need natural turn-taking, spoken responses, or interruptions during an exchange.
- Uploaded recordings: assess transcription or translation endpoints and their file, duration, and streaming constraints.
- Text-first processing: a staged pipeline may be useful when the application needs a distinct point to inspect, store, or route recognized text before generating a response.
- Mixed product: an application can combine approaches—for example, transcribing uploaded audio while using a realtime session for live conversation. Evaluate the requirements and limits of each path separately.
Before choosing, write down whether you need partial transcripts, how you define the end of a user turn, how interruptions should work, and what information operators need to diagnose failures. These requirements influence both API selection and application design.
Select a transport and protect credentials
Transport depends on where audio originates and where it needs to go. OpenAI documents WebRTC, WebSocket, and SIP for realtime use; they represent deployment options, not interchangeable implementation details. A browser or mobile client, a backend service, and a telephony integration can call for different connection patterns.

In Microsoft’s documented browser flow, the application obtains a token from a token service before establishing the WebRTC connection. Keep long-lived provider secrets on the server; use the provider’s documented server-side token or session flow rather than embedding a permanent secret in browser code. Follow the selected provider’s current instructions for token issuance and session setup.
Plan for audio limits and streaming behavior
Limits differ by provider, endpoint, and processing method. Design against the selected route’s current documentation instead of assuming one provider’s upload or streaming rules apply elsewhere.

Recorded audio and OpenAI endpoints
The OpenAI Audio API FAQ describes transcription and translation endpoints, along with streaming for completed recordings and ongoing audio. It says streaming is not supported with whisper-1. The FAQ gives a 25 MiB maximum upload for legacy whisper-1 transcription uploads; newer GPT-4o transcription routes may apply different validation, such as duration or token limits. Confirm the chosen model’s current limits before deciding how to chunk files or retry uploads.
Google Cloud Speech-to-Text
Google Cloud documents separate content limits for synchronous, asynchronous, and streaming recognition. Its quotas and limits page states a 10 MB limit for local-file requests and says streaming audio should be sent at approximately real-time speed. Longer recordings and storage requirements depend on the method used.

Its quota accounting can be based on file duration, while audio channels are billed individually; a multichannel file can therefore affect cost differently from quota usage.

Estimate cost and capacity for your workload
A price per minute is not enough to estimate a voice feature’s total cost. Count expected audio volume, channels, the selected recognition or realtime model, input and output usage, batch method, retries, and any supporting storage or compute.
Google Cloud says Speech-to-Text pricing depends on processed audio duration, channel count, recognition model, batch method, and API version. Its pricing page also describes dynamic batch as a lower-urgency option with discounted pricing. Check current Speech-to-Text pricing for the intended region and workload; storage or compute services used alongside recognition may be charged separately.
OpenAI’s GPT-Realtime-1.5 and GPT-Realtime-2 model pages publish token-based prices and tiered rate-limit tables. Recheck them when planning a deployment: model prices and limits can change, and token-based realtime pricing cannot be compared directly with per-minute recognition pricing without converting a specific workload.
These provider-specific figures and rules do not establish a universal cost or quality winner. Build an estimate from expected usage, then validate the assumptions against current provider pricing and quota documentation.
Quick Recap
Implement in a deliberate sequence
- Define the interaction. Decide whether users will speak live, upload recordings, hear generated responses, or use a combination.
- Choose the architecture. Pick realtime speech-to-speech or separate recognition, inference, and synthesis stages based on turn-taking, latency needs, control of intermediate text, and operational complexity.
- Choose the transport. Match the connection to the client and deployment. For browser or mobile realtime audio, investigate WebRTC first and follow the selected provider’s current implementation guidance.
- Set up secure sessions. Keep long-lived credentials server-side. Configure the provider’s documented token or session flow, audio formats, and session behavior.
- Design failure and turn handling. Decide how the application will handle partial transcripts, interruptions, end-of-turn detection, network recovery, uploads that exceed limits, and rate limits. Verify the exact behaviors supported by the API you choose.
- Estimate capacity and cost. Model expected minutes, channels, realtime input and output, retries, and supporting infrastructure. Check current pricing and quotas for the chosen product and region.
- Validate with representative users and conditions. Test accents, background noise, different microphones, and network conditions relevant to your audience. Treat this as a validation plan, not a guarantee of performance.
Prepare a representative test setup
- Collect consented test audio that reflects the accents, speaking styles, and noise conditions your application will encounter.
- Test with the microphones and network conditions users are likely to have, including less reliable connections.
- For recording test samples, a USB microphone is optional; no particular device is required by the documented API patterns.
- Track outcomes such as missed turns, incorrect end-of-turn behavior, interruption handling, transcript usability, and recovery after connection or upload failures.
- Repeat tests after changing models, audio settings, transport, or session configuration.
