You can add a YouTube video to a slide using PowerPoint’s Online Video option. In the desktop app, insert the video’s embed code; in PowerPoint for the web (formerly PowerPoint Online), insert its webpage address. Because the video streams from YouTube rather than being stored in the presentation, you need an internet connection to play it.
Insert a YouTube video in desktop PowerPoint
- On YouTube, open the video, select Share, and copy its embed content. Use the embed code, not just the video’s webpage address.
- In PowerPoint, select the slide where you want the video.
- Choose Insert > Media > Video > Online Video. Paste the code in the From a Video Embed Code box, then select the insert arrow or control.
- Move and resize the video frame as needed. Start the slide show from that slide and select the video’s play control to test it. The preview image may need to be selected once before it appears.
Ribbon labels differ among PowerPoint versions. If your version shows Insert > Video > Online Video, use that option instead. Microsoft’s desktop embedding instructions cover the available workflow.
Insert a YouTube video in PowerPoint for the web
- Open the YouTube video in another browser tab and copy its address from the address bar.
- Return to PowerPoint for the web and select the target slide.
- Choose Insert > Online Video, paste the address, and select Insert.
- Move or resize the video frame. To play it, start Slide Show from the current slide and select the video’s play button.
For the web workflow, paste the video webpage address rather than desktop PowerPoint’s embed code. See Microsoft’s instructions for inserting a video from YouTube or another site.

What to know about online video playback
- The video streams from its host. It is not an offline copy stored in your presentation. Microsoft says an internet connection is required for successful playback.
- Playback uses the host’s controls. PowerPoint’s Fade, Bookmark, and Trim features do not apply to online videos.
- Embedding may be restricted. Some videos cannot be embedded. Check whether the video is available and embedding is permitted, and follow the provider’s terms and privacy policy.

Troubleshoot a video that will not insert or play
- Desktop insertion fails: Confirm you copied the YouTube embed code, not only the URL. Check whether embedding is allowed for that video, and install any required Office updates.
- The video does not play during the presentation: Check your internet connection and make sure the video is still available on YouTube. An online video will not play offline as a copy from the deck.
- You need offline playback or trimming: Consider inserting a local video file using desktop PowerPoint. Do not download or reuse YouTube content unless you have confirmed you have the rights and comply with the platform’s terms.
Use a local video file instead
If you already have a video file and need it available without streaming, insert it as a local video rather than an online video. Microsoft’s comparison of web-based PowerPoint features says the web version supports inserting online videos, while inserting a video file from a PC requires desktop PowerPoint. PowerPoint for the web supports local video files up to 256 MB; Microsoft lists supported formats in its video-file instructions. For desktop PowerPoint, Microsoft recommends MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. File insertion does not itself grant permission to download or reuse a video hosted on YouTube.
