To let visitors share the page they are reading with WhatsApp contacts, add WhatsApp to WordPress’s Sharing Buttons block. On WordPress.com, insert the block and choose WhatsApp; on a self-hosted WordPress.org site, WordPress.com’s guide directs users to Jetpack if the block is missing. This is different from a WhatsApp contact button, which starts a conversation with you.
Choose the right kind of WhatsApp button
A share button gives readers a way to send the current page to their WhatsApp contacts. A contact button opens a conversation with the site owner. WordPress.com documents these as separate blocks, so choose based on what you want visitors to do.
| Option | What it does | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Sharing Buttons block with WhatsApp | Lets a reader share the current page. | Inline content or a post template; available in the WordPress.com editor, and the guide recommends Jetpack for self-hosted WordPress.org sites. |
| WhatsApp Button block | Lets a visitor contact the site owner via WhatsApp. | Contact or inquiry flow on WordPress.com. The guide lists Premium, Business, and Commerce plans; confirm availability for your current account. |
| Click to Chat by HoliThemes | Its directory listing describes chat buttons and a separate Share feature. | A self-hosted plugin option when you need its features; not necessary just to use the documented Sharing Buttons block. |
WordPress.com Support describes the Sharing Buttons block as a way to let readers share content to platforms including WhatsApp. See its Sharing Buttons block guide, last reviewed September 28, 2026.
Add WhatsApp sharing on WordPress.com
- Open the page or post. In your site dashboard, edit the page or post where you want the share control.
- For a site-wide post layout, edit the template instead. Go to Appearance → Editor → Templates and open Single Posts. Adding the block there places it in the post template rather than just one post.
- Insert the sharing block. Open the block inserter, search for Sharing Buttons, and add it to the content or template.
- Add WhatsApp as a service. Select the block’s inner plus button and choose WhatsApp from the available sharing services.
- Arrange and style it. Use the block toolbar to reorder buttons. In the block settings and Styles tab, adjust alignment, size, horizontal or vertical layout, wrapping, icon or text display, colors, and spacing.
The block supports icon-and-text, icon-only, and text-only presentations. Keep the button near the content readers are likely to share, and preview the page to confirm its placement and appearance.

If the Sharing Buttons block is missing
WordPress.com’s support guide says the block’s absence likely means the site is self-hosted WordPress.org rather than hosted on WordPress.com. The guide’s suggested route for adding the block is to install Jetpack, then confirm that Sharing Buttons appears in your editor. Availability can depend on your setup, so check the editor after installation rather than assuming the block has been added.
If you want visitors to contact you instead
Use the WhatsApp Button block when the goal is to receive inquiries, not to share the page URL. Add it from the block inserter, then enter the WhatsApp contact number and a default first message in its settings. WordPress.com Support describes it as a way for visitors to contact the site owner; its guide lists WordPress.com Premium, Business, and Commerce plans. Check your account’s current plan details because plan entitlements may change. Read the WhatsApp Button block guide, last reviewed August 11, 2026.

Plugin alternative for self-hosted sites
The WordPress.org directory lists Click to Chat by HoliThemes. Its vendor-submitted listing describes chat buttons, shortcode placement, and a distinct Share feature. The documented setup includes installing and activating the plugin from the dashboard, then entering a WhatsApp number with its country code. Choose it only if its additional placement or chat features suit your needs; a contact widget and a simple share control serve different purposes.
The directory also lists Click to Chat by Virtualcode. The listing is product documentation, not an independent performance or privacy assessment. The available documentation does not establish that either plugin is faster, safer, or better than the other or than a built-in block.
