In a classic theme, use Appearance → Menus and enable the hidden field in Screen Options if necessary. In a block theme, edit the link in the Navigation block in Appearance → Editor. If you are asking “Where did the Title Attribute field go?”, you may be looking for the classic-menu control while your site uses block-based navigation.
A title attribute is optional supplementary information, not a replacement for clear, visible link text. Use the menu label to communicate the link’s essential purpose.
Choose the instructions for your theme
WordPress navigation can be managed either with the classic menu screen or with the block-based Navigation block. WordPress 6.0 introduced the Navigation block for block themes; whether the classic Appearance → Menus screen is available can depend on the theme and plugins. Add the attribute in a classic menu
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance → Menus and select the menu you want to edit.
- At the top of the screen, open Screen Options. Under the advanced menu properties, check Title Attribute if it is not already enabled. WordPress describes the field as “The attribute used when displaying the label.” See the Appearance Menus Screen documentation.
- Expand the menu item you want to change. Enter supplementary text in its Title Attribute field. Keep the visible Navigation Label clear enough to explain the link’s purpose without that extra text.
- Select Save Menu.
- If you need to confirm the result, inspect the rendered link on the site. The classic walker can omit a stored title when it is empty or matches the menu/link title under its comparisons. See Walker_Nav_Menu.
Add the attribute in a block theme
- Open Appearance → Editor and edit the template or template part containing the site’s Navigation block, often the header.
- Select the relevant link in the Navigation block and open its link settings.
- Enter the supplementary text in Title Attribute, if that field is available in your installed editor, then save the site or editor changes.
WordPress.com’s current support instructions identify a Title Attribute field in block-theme link settings. The Navigation block is distinct from the classic menu screen, and its controls can change: the official Navigation block guide currently flags an overhaul for WordPress 7.1. If the labels or controls differ, follow the settings in the editor version installed on your site.

Set the title attribute with code for classic menu output
For links rendered through wp_nav_menu() and the classic walker, WordPress provides the nav_menu_link_attributes filter. Its callback receives the anchor attributes, menu item, menu arguments and depth, and must return the modified attributes array. The filter dates to WordPress 3.6.0; its $depth parameter was added in 4.1.0. See the hook reference.

}, 10, 4 );Replace 123 with the intended menu item ID and adjust the text to fit the link. The example shows how to target one item; it is illustrative, not a report of code tested on a live site. The stored field is represented as attr_title in the Nav_Menu_Items REST API reference. The classic walker derives a title from that field only under its non-empty and comparison conditions before applying link-attribute filters. A plugin, custom walker, Navigation block, theme or later filter can alter the rendered result, so inspect the intended anchor after implementation.
Use title text as a supplement, not essential content
A title attribute may provide extra information that clarifies a link, but do not rely on it to carry a warning, destination detail or other information visitors need before following the link. Put essential information in the visible link text. W3C WAI cautions: “Because of the extensive user agent limitations in supporting access to the title attribute, authors should use caution in applying this technique.” Its H33 page describes an example technique, not a requirement for WCAG conformance; the guidance on link purpose favors descriptive link text. Do not treat the title attribute as “alt text.” It is a different HTML attribute, and neither a consistent tooltip nor consistent assistive-technology support should be assumed.
