In the WordPress block editor, select the Image block, open its Settings sidebar, expand Advanced, enter your text in Title attribute, then save or update the post or page. This sets the HTML title attribute for that image block; it does not rename the Media Library file or replace alt text.

Set the image title attribute in the block editor

  1. Open the post or page in the WordPress block editor and select the Image block you want to edit.

  2. If the settings sidebar is hidden, open Settings near the Save or Publish controls.

  3. In the sidebar, open the Settings tab and expand Advanced.

The field is an Advanced setting for the selected Image block, as shown in the WordPress Image block documentation. WordPress describes it as a way to describe the image’s role on the page, but cautions that many devices and browsers do not display this text. Do not rely on it to show a consistent tooltip.

Title attribute, Media Library title, and alt text are different

Field What it is for Where it is edited or used
Title attribute Describes the image’s role on the page. Set in the selected Image block’s Advanced settings. It applies to that block on the current post or page.
Media Library Title Names the media item. Shown in the Media Library’s File column; a theme or plugin may also show it on attachment pages or in galleries. It is not the block’s title attribute. See WordPress’s Media Library screen guide.
Alt text Describes the image for accessibility. Block-level alt text applies to the image on the current post or page. The Media Library’s alt text serves as the default when you insert the image elsewhere. See the Image block guide.

WordPress notes that an image inserted as an individual image becomes disconnected from its Media Library data and can be updated on a per-image basis. This helps explain why a change to a block-level value should not be treated as a global edit to the media item. See WordPress’s Edit Media guide.

Scope of these steps

These instructions cover the WordPress block editor’s Image block. The documented workflow does not establish a reliable sequence for adding the HTML title attribute in the Classic Editor, so do not assume the same controls are available there. For block-specific details, consult the WordPress Image block documentation.
