To add a video thumbnail, open the video in your platform’s creator dashboard, choose its thumbnail control, then either select a frame from the video or upload a separate image. The exact menu, image ratio, file limit and eligibility rule depend on the platform and on whether the video is a standard YouTube upload, a YouTube Short or a Vimeo video.
Choose the right thumbnail method first
A frame selection is quickest when the exact image you want already appears in the video. Upload a custom image when you need designed text, branding, a composed still, or an image that never appears in the footage. YouTube and Vimeo support both approaches, but their controls and file rules differ.
| Platform and video type | Frame selection | Custom upload | Important limits or eligibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube standard video | Yes, where the thumbnail control offers a frame or suggestion | Yes | Account verification is required for custom thumbnails. YouTube recommends 16:9, 3840 × 2160 pixels, JPG or PNG; minimum width 640 pixels. Desktop limit is 50 MB; mobile video-thumbnail limit is 2 MB. |
| YouTube Short | Yes; the mobile app can still let you pick a frame | Yes, through YouTube Studio on a computer when the account is eligible | YouTube recommends 9:16 and 2160 × 3840 pixels, with a minimum height of 640 pixels. Desktop limit is 50 MB. A vertical video using a 16:9 custom image can be automatically shown as a 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore and subscription pages. |
| Vimeo video | Yes | Yes | Supported types listed by Vimeo include JPG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, TIFF and PNG; animated GIF files are not supported. Vimeo recommends the video’s exact dimensions and says uploaded thumbnails receive slight compression. |
These are platform recommendations and limits, not universal rules for every video service. Instagram and TikTok workflows are not covered here because their current official instructions were not verified for this guide.

Prepare the image before uploading
For a standard YouTube video
- Use a 16:9 composition. YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels and accepts JPG or PNG under the cited guidance.
- Keep the file at or below 50 MB on desktop. If you upload from the YouTube mobile app, the cited video-thumbnail limit is 2 MB.
- Use a clear frame with the subject separated from the background. Keep any title short enough to remain readable at small display sizes.
- Export a still image rather than an animated file; YouTube’s cited guidance specifies JPG or PNG.
For a YouTube Short
- Design vertically at 9:16. YouTube recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels and a minimum height of 640 pixels.
- Upload through YouTube Studio on a computer when using a separate custom image. The account must meet YouTube’s verification and eligibility requirements.
- Do not assume a vertical thumbnail will look identical everywhere. YouTube says a 16:9 custom thumbnail for a vertical video can be auto-generated as 4:5 on Home, Explore and subscription pages, while the custom image remains visible in the watch feed, watch history and non-mobile platforms.
For Vimeo
- Use the video’s exact pixel dimensions where possible; Vimeo notes that uploaded thumbnails receive slight compression.
- Vimeo lists JPG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, TIFF and PNG as supported formats, but animated GIF files are not supported.
- Vimeo’s help material states that at least 80% of the image must have an alpha (transparency) level above 250. This is a Vimeo-specific requirement, not a general thumbnail rule, so check the current Vimeo interface if your image uses transparency.
How to add a custom thumbnail to a standard YouTube video
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Choose Content from the left menu.
- Open the video you want to edit and select its thumbnail control.
- In the Thumbnail area, choose Upload file, then select the prepared JPG or PNG. YouTube may also show Get suggestions; that option uses images suggested by YouTube rather than your own file.
- Select Save.
The new image may take time to appear across YouTube surfaces. Check the video page and your channel after saving rather than assuming an unchanged preview means the upload failed.

If YouTube does not show “Upload file”
YouTube says custom thumbnails are available when the account is verified. Daily upload limits can vary by country or region and by channel history, and a copyright strike can affect eligibility. Complete account verification, review the channel’s feature eligibility in YouTube Studio, and check for active strikes before repeatedly trying the upload. If the control is present but the file is rejected, reduce the file size, use JPG or PNG, and confirm the image meets the platform’s dimensions and policy requirements.
Thumbnail policy
Custom thumbnails must comply with YouTube Community Guidelines. Prohibited or harmful imagery can be rejected and can result in strikes. A technically valid image is not automatically an acceptable one.
How to change a YouTube Shorts thumbnail
- Open YouTube Studio on a computer.
- Choose Content, then open the Shorts section.
- Open the Short you want to edit and select its thumbnail edit control.
- Upload the vertical image, using the 9:16 guidance above, or choose the available frame option.
- Select Save.
YouTube’s live Help instructions are the authority for current availability because controls can change. YouTube has also announced that YouTube Partner Program creators can upload custom thumbnails for Shorts, while the mobile app continues to support picking a frame. Treat that announcement as context, not as a replacement for the current Studio eligibility shown on your account.

How to upload or change a thumbnail on Vimeo
- Open Library and select the video.
- Scroll below the player to the Thumbnail section.
- Choose one of the available routes: upload a custom image, select a preselected image, or choose a frame from the video.
- For a frame capture, play the video to the desired moment and use the frame control.
- After uploading or capturing, select that image in the thumbnail list. Vimeo requires this selection to make the image the active thumbnail.
If the image appears in the list but the old preview remains active, return to the list and click the new image itself. Confirm the file is not an animated GIF and export it at the video’s dimensions when possible.
Frame or designed image: which should you use?
Choose a frame when
- The important action or subject is already visible in the footage.
- You need to finish the upload quickly without another graphics step.
- The video’s tone is documentary or spontaneous and a natural still is appropriate.
Upload a separate image when
- You need readable title text, a logo, a series label or consistent visual branding.
- The video does not contain a clean, well-composed still.
- You want to combine a face, product or location with a deliberately chosen background.
Before exporting, preview the image at the small size used in feeds. Check that faces, logos and text are not cut off by the platform’s crop or by mobile layouts. Keep the original editable file so you can make a revised version without rebuilding the design.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| There is no custom-upload button on YouTube. | The account is not verified, feature access is unavailable, or a strike or regional/channel-history limit affects eligibility. | Verify the account, inspect feature eligibility and strikes in YouTube Studio, and check again. Availability can differ by country or region. |
| The upload is rejected for size. | The file exceeds the device-specific limit. | For YouTube, keep desktop uploads at or below 50 MB; mobile video-thumbnail uploads have a cited 2 MB limit. Re-export as an optimized JPG when appropriate. |
| The image looks cropped on a Short. | The image ratio does not match the surface where YouTube displays it. | Use a 9:16 source for Shorts and keep critical content away from the edges. Remember that YouTube may show a 4:5 generated version on Home, Explore and subscription pages for a 16:9 custom image. |
| The Vimeo file appears but is not active. | The image was uploaded but not selected in the thumbnail list. | Click the uploaded image in the list to make it the active thumbnail. |
| Vimeo refuses the file. | The file is an animated GIF or uses an image setup that conflicts with Vimeo’s requirements. | Export a static JPG or PNG, use the video’s exact dimensions, and review Vimeo’s current transparency guidance. |
| The old image still appears after saving. | Propagation or browser caching delays the visible update. | Wait, reload the video page, and check from a private window or another device before uploading again. |
| The thumbnail violates policy. | The image contains prohibited or harmful material. | Replace it with a compliant design. YouTube can reject the image and issue strikes for Community Guidelines violations. |
Automating YouTube thumbnail uploads
For developers, Google’s authenticated YouTube Data API includes an operation for uploading and setting a custom video thumbnail. The reference lists image/jpeg, image/png and application/octet-stream as accepted media types. A request can return a forbidden response when the authenticated user lacks permission. This API route requires OAuth authentication and is separate from the ordinary Studio workflow; it does not bypass YouTube’s eligibility or policy checks.

If the thumbnail artwork is published on a web page, ScreenshotNeo can capture that page as a clean image before you upload it to YouTube or Vimeo. It is not a YouTube or Vimeo uploader: you still use the platform’s thumbnail control for the final step. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server also lets AI agents call take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.

Can I reuse one thumbnail file on YouTube and Vimeo?
You can upload the same artwork only if it meets both services’ rules, but a single layout may not display well in every surface. Standard YouTube videos favor 16:9, Shorts favor 9:16, and Vimeo recommends the video’s exact dimensions.
Why is a frame picker useful if I already designed an image?
A frame picker gives you a platform-native fallback when custom upload is unavailable or when a natural still better represents the video. It also avoids creating a second image file.
How long should I wait before deciding that a thumbnail change failed?
Allow time for the new image to propagate, then reload the video page and check another browser or device. If the platform still shows the old image, revisit the save step and confirm that the new file is selected as the active thumbnail.
