To add a Super Admin in WordPress Multisite, sign in with an authorized network administrator account, open My Sites > Network Admin > Users, edit the account, select “Grant this user super admin privileges for the Network.”, and save the profile. You can also run wp super-admin add <user> with WP-CLI.
Before you grant Super Admin access
- Confirm the installation is Multisite. Super Admin is the network-level privilege used by WordPress Multisite. On a single-site installation, the Administrator role provides the broad administrative access instead.
- Use an authorized network administrator account. The Super Admin control is processed only when the current account has the network-level
manage_network_optionscapability. - Identify the correct account. Check the user’s login, email address, or user ID before making the change.
- Review the scope. Super Admin can administer the network’s sites, users, themes, plugins, options, and network upgrades. Grant it only when network-wide control is genuinely required.
Method 1: Add Super Admin from Network Admin
- Sign in to WordPress with a network administrator account.
- In the toolbar, open My Sites > Network Admin.
- Go to Users > All Users. This screen lists user accounts across the network.
- Locate the account and select Edit.
- In the user profile’s Super Admin section, select “Grant this user super admin privileges for the Network.”
- Save or update the profile.
- Open the profile again and confirm that the checkbox remains selected.
The checkbox appears in the Network Admin user-edit screen and reflects the account’s current Super Admin state. If it is missing, verify that you are editing the account from Network Admin rather than an individual site and that your own account has network-level authority.
Method 2: Add Super Admin with WP-CLI
From the WordPress installation, an operator with shell access and the required WordPress permissions can run:
wp super-admin add <user>
Replace <user> with the target user’s ID, email address, or login. For example, the command can be used in an automation script after the account has been identified.

Inspect or revoke Super Admin accounts
List the current network Super Admins with:
wp super-admin list
Revoke the privilege with:
wp super-admin remove <user>
WP-CLI also supports global parameters such as --url=<url> to select a site context. The super-admin commands themselves manage the network-level Super Admin list, not a role on only one site. Syntax and available parameters can vary with the installed WP-CLI and WordPress releases.

Super Admin versus a role on one site
Super Admin is not simply another per-site role. It grants network administration and access to the network’s other administrative features. A site Administrator’s role, by contrast, applies to one individual site.

Network account creation and site membership are separate actions. A user can exist in the network without being assigned to a particular site. To give someone access to only one site, open that site’s Users screen, add or select the account, and assign the narrowest suitable site role. Do not use Super Admin when one-site access is all the person needs.
Verify the change and undo it safely
Verify in WordPress
Return to the account in Network Admin > Users and check that the Super Admin checkbox shows the intended state.

Verify with WP-CLI
Run wp super-admin list and confirm that the target account appears.
Revoke access
In the interface, clear the Super Admin checkbox and save the profile. From the command line, run wp super-admin remove <user>. Before revoking an account, make sure another authorized network administrator will retain access so the network is not left without a capable administrator.

Common problems
The Super Admin checkbox is not visible
- Make sure you opened the profile from My Sites > Network Admin > Users, not from a site’s local Users screen.
- Confirm that the signed-in account has permission to manage network options.
- Verify that the installation is actually running Multisite.
The user can administer one site but not the network
That account has a per-site role, such as Administrator, rather than Super Admin. Add the network privilege through Network Admin or with wp super-admin add only if network-wide authority is intended.
The command targets the wrong account
Check whether the value supplied to WP-CLI is the intended user ID, email address, or login, then run wp super-admin list to confirm the resulting account list.
