To livestream a podcast with a still cover image, create a scene in encoder software that displays the image while sending your podcast audio, then connect the encoder to a YouTube Live event. Start the encoder, check the incoming preview in YouTube Studio, and go live from the event controls. You do not need a camera for this audio-led setup.

Before you set up the stream

  • Enable livestreaming early. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so check channel access before your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder-streaming instructions.
  • Prepare the cover image and audio. Decide whether you will play a prerecorded episode or capture audio live. The basic scene needs the cover image as its visible video and the podcast audio as its audio source.
  • Choose who can watch. Decide whether the event should be public, private, or unlisted, and verify the setting in YouTube Studio rather than assuming the channel default is right.

Create a YouTube Live event

Start immediately or schedule ahead

In YouTube Studio, open Go Live. Create an immediate stream if you are ready to broadcast, or use the Manage tab to schedule one. Scheduling creates an upcoming event you can share, and viewers can set reminders. YouTube’s event workflow is described in its encoder-streaming guide and live-stream settings guide.

Set visibility before broadcasting

Choose public, private, or unlisted according to your audience. Check the event’s visibility explicitly: YouTube notes that age-based defaults differ, so a default may not match your intent.

Build the image-and-audio scene in your encoder

In your encoder software, prepare one scene with the cover image visible as the video and the podcast audio routed as the sound source. For a prerecorded episode, use the audio file as the source; for a live recording, route the live audio into the encoder. YouTube’s setup requires an encoder feed, while OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes local media sources. Exact image-source menu steps and a tested output resolution are not established here, so the labels and controls will depend on your encoder.

Before connecting, check that the image is framed as intended and that the audio source is present. Do not assume a microphone, audio interface, hardware encoder, or paid service is mandatory; the equipment depends on how you are producing the audio.

Connect the encoder and go live

  1. Copy the event’s connection details. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, open the event and locate its stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its Manage live stream settings help page.
  2. Enter the details in the encoder. Use the event’s server URL and stream key in the encoder’s streaming settings. Keep the key private; it authorizes the encoder to send a feed to your channel.
  3. Start the encoder. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that the cover image appears and the podcast audio reaches YouTube as expected.
  4. Start the YouTube event. For a scheduled-stream workflow, YouTube says to click Go live after the preview appears. Follow the event controls for an immediate stream as well.
  5. End the broadcast cleanly. Stop the encoder feed and end the event in YouTube Studio as appropriate. YouTube automatically archives streams that run for under 12 hours.

Protect the stream key and check the audience settings

Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it, share it publicly, or include it in a screenshot. If it is compromised, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room and then replace the old key in the encoder settings. Confirm public, private, or unlisted visibility before broadcasting, since the default may not fit the audience you intend.

Copyright, archives, and monetization

Use audio and artwork you have the right to stream

Make sure you have permission to broadcast the podcast recording, music, and cover artwork. A live-stream setup does not grant rights to material you did not create or license. Consider YouTube’s live-streaming guidance when planning the event.

Know what happens after the stream

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Live-stream monetization depends on eligibility: YouTube ties it to YouTube Partner Program creators, and its settings documentation describes ads and Super Chat while noting that memberships are available to some channels. Do not assume every channel has access to every monetization feature.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • No preview appears: Confirm the encoder is running and that the server URL and stream key match the event selected in YouTube Studio. If this is the channel’s first live stream, enablement may still be pending for up to 24 hours.
  • The image appears but there is no audio: Check that the podcast audio source is included in the encoder scene and is reaching its output. Verify the encoder’s audio routing and the incoming preview before going live.
  • The wrong event or audience can see the stream: Stop before broadcasting and check the selected event and its visibility in YouTube Studio. Set it to public, private, or unlisted as intended.
  • The stream key may have been exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room, then update the encoder with the replacement key before resuming.
  • The stream does not become live after preview: For a scheduled event, use the event’s Go live control after the preview appears; starting the encoder sends the feed but is not itself the final YouTube event action.
