To add a speedrun timer to OBS, install the LiveSplit One OBS plugin, then add its source and choose your split file and layout. If that plugin does not support your operating system or OBS version, OpenSpeedRun offers a browser-source alternative through an optional local overlay server.
Choose a timer integration

OBS supports plugins that add sources and other features, but compatibility can vary by platform and OBS version. See the OBS Project plugins guide before installing a plugin.
Add LiveSplit One to OBS
- Check compatibility. Confirm the plugin release matches your operating system and architecture, and supports your installed OBS version.
- Install the plugin. Follow the operating-system-specific instructions in the LiveSplit One OBS plugin README. The project provides instructions for Windows, Linux, Flatpak, and macOS.
- Add its source. In OBS, open the scene where you want the timer. In the Sources dock, click + and select LiveSplit One.
- Choose the run and appearance. Open the source properties, select the run’s split file, and choose a layout. You can add multiple LiveSplit One sources that share split state but use different layouts.
- Position and check readability. Place the source in the scene and check it against the gameplay. Keep the timer legible without covering important action.
- Set controls if needed. Open Settings → Hotkeys in OBS and assign hotkeys to the LiveSplit One source actions you want to control.
Use OpenSpeedRun as a browser-source alternative
- Install and run OpenSpeedRun using the instructions in its project README.
- In OpenSpeedRun’s configuration, enable OBS overlay server. The server is disabled by default.
- In OBS, add a Browser source and connect it to the local WebSocket overlay endpoint documented by OpenSpeedRun. Use its included overlay example or customize the browser-source presentation.
This route is useful when the dedicated plugin is not available for your platform or OBS build. Confirm the browser source is connecting to the local endpoint and that the overlay server is running.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- LiveSplit One does not appear in the Sources menu: Check that you installed the release for the correct OS and architecture, followed the matching installation instructions, and are using a supported OBS version. OBS plugin compatibility varies.
- The timer source appears, but the run or layout is wrong: Reopen the source properties and select the intended split file and layout.
- The OpenSpeedRun browser source is empty: Verify that OBS overlay server is enabled in OpenSpeedRun’s configuration, the timer application is running, and the browser source uses the documented local WebSocket endpoint.
- The timer obscures gameplay or is hard to read: Reposition or resize the source in the scene, then review the composition with the game visible.
- Hotkeys do not control the timer: Check Settings → Hotkeys in OBS and assign the desired actions to the LiveSplit One source.
