To add a spectrum visualizer to a 24/7 music livestream in OBS Studio, install a compatible audio-visualizer source, point it at the OBS audio source carrying your music, and place it over your background in the scene. For continuous playback, you can use OBS’s VLC Video source with a looping playlist—but a loop does not keep the computer, internet connection, encoder, or YouTube stream online by itself.
What you need before you start
- OBS Studio and music that you are authorized to stream.
- A visualizer compatible with your OBS version and operating system. The OBS Project forum listing for Audio Waves Visualizer specifies OBS Studio 32.0.2 or later and Windows, macOS, and Linux support; check the current listing and project instructions before installing because compatibility can change: Audio Waves Visualizer.
- If you want OBS to play a playlist, VLC installed. OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for its VLC Video source.
- A YouTube stream key and a working streaming setup if you plan to broadcast live rather than only preview the scene.
A visualizer reacts to an audio input; it does not create or play the music. The essential routing detail is to select the OBS source that actually carries the program music.
Install and configure an OBS spectrum visualizer
1. Install a compatible visualizer source
- Open the current Audio Waves Visualizer project instructions and choose the installer or installation method for your operating system. Confirm the required OBS version before proceeding.
- Complete the installation and restart OBS if the project instructions require it.
- Open the scene where you want the visualization. In the Sources panel, add the visualizer source using the name and source type provided by the installed plugin.
The project describes its output as a transparent video source, suitable for compositing over other scene elements, and documents access to level and spectrum data from a selected active OBS audio source, including 64 spectrum bands. Its forum listing and project repository are the references for current options and installation details: OBS forum listing and project repository.

2. Select the music source, not just any active audio
- Start playback of the music in the source you intend to broadcast.
- In OBS’s audio mixer, check that the corresponding source’s meter moves while the music plays.
- Open the visualizer’s properties and choose that same active OBS source as its audio input. If the plugin is listening to a silent source, a microphone, or unrelated desktop audio, it will not represent the music in your stream.
- Choose a bar or wave presentation and adjust the source’s size and position in the preview.
Keep the scene hierarchy intentional: place the visualizer above the background video or image, and below titles or branding that should remain readable. The exact controls depend on the plugin version; use its current instructions rather than assuming the labels or available effects are unchanged.
#1 Best Overall

The noise filtering function significantly improves sound clarity, making it suitable for various environments. Choose from auto, deep sleep, music spectrum, and clock display modes to optimize your audio analysis.
3. Confirm that the stream mix and visualizer agree
- Play a representative passage and watch the OBS mixer. Verify that the music source is active and that the intended program audio reaches the output mix.
- Watch the visualizer while the music plays. If the bars or waves do not react, recheck the selected audio source and its meter before changing other scene settings.
- Use OBS’s preview to check that the visualization is visible at the intended output size and does not obscure essential text.
- Make a short test recording or private/unlisted stream, as appropriate, and check both the picture and audio in the resulting playback.
Make music play from a looping playlist
Use OBS’s VLC Video source
- Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, install the 64-bit VLC version; OBS identifies VLC as a requirement for its VLC Video source.
- In OBS, select the scene and add a VLC Video source.
- In the source properties, add the media files to the playlist and enable the loop option. Shuffle is available if you want the playlist order randomized.
- Start playback and confirm that the VLC source’s audio is active in the OBS mixer. Select that source in the visualizer’s audio-input settings if it is the source carrying your music.
- Preview the end of one item and the start of the next. Check for gaps, unexpected silence, or a visualizer that stops reacting at transitions.
OBS documents playlist playback, loop, and shuffle for the VLC Video source: OBS media sources. Looping restarts the playlist at its end; it is not an automatic restart or reconnection guarantee for OBS, the computer, network, encoder, or destination stream.
Choose between an in-OBS plugin and an external visualizer
| Approach | What the documented setup provides | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Audio Waves Visualizer | An OBS source that can listen to a selected audio source and render waves or bars; the project describes transparent output and spectrum data. | Check its stated OBS version and operating-system support against your installation. No independent resource-use or long-duration reliability measurements are established. |
| SYQEL with OBS capture | SYQEL documents sending reactive visuals into OBS through Spout on Windows or Mac Screen Share on macOS: SYQEL’s OBS setup. | This involves an additional application and capture-source dependency. The setup description is vendor documentation, not independent performance testing. |
| Spectralizer | The OBS resource page describes visualizations of OBS audio sources: Spectralizer. | Its author marks it deprecated in favor of Waveform. Treat it as a legacy choice and verify current maintenance and compatibility before installing. |
For an optional now-playing overlay, Tuna is separate from a spectrum visualizer. Its documentation describes metadata and cover-art integrations, including VLC Video, and writing image and text files that OBS can use as sources: Tuna documentation. It adds track information; it does not generate the spectrum display.

Plan for 24/7 operation
A working playlist and reactive scene are only part of an always-on broadcast. Before relying on the setup unattended, observe a representative run and check the full path: media playback, OBS audio routing, visualizer response, encoder output, network connection, and the YouTube stream. The documented loop control does not establish restart recovery, reconnection, remote monitoring, or guaranteed uptime. Those depend on the computer, operating system, network, encoder, and streaming destination you use.
- Check the audio mixer and visualizer after playlist transitions, not only at startup.
- Verify that the broadcast remains available after the kinds of interruptions your setup may encounter; do not infer recovery behavior from a successful short test.
- Plan how you will notice a stopped stream and regain access to the streaming machine.
- Check plugin and OBS compatibility again after updates before leaving a setup unattended.
Clear music rights before going live
A visualizer does not grant permission to broadcast music. YouTube states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A stream may be interrupted or terminated if third-party content remains. YouTube also notes that licensed content can still be interrupted if the channel has not been allowlisted by the rights owner through Content ID. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams, confirm that your license covers livestream use, and arrange any required Content ID allowlisting before broadcasting.
