You can update what OBS sends to YouTube without clicking Stop Streaming, but changing an active VLC Video playlist can restart that playlist’s playback. To reduce disruption, prepare and preview a second VLC Video source or scene with the revised loop, then switch to it at a planned point while the broadcast remains live. Test the handoff with your installed OBS and VLC versions: OBS does not guarantee every scene or source transition will be seamless.

Choose the right OBS source for your loop

Use VLC Video for a playlist

OBS’s VLC Video source supports multiple media items in a playlist, with options including loop, shuffle, and behavior when the source is hidden. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS describes VLC Video as supporting playlists, unlike Media Source. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Use Media Source for one file

OBS’s built-in Media Source is intended for an individual audio or video file. It can loop that file and can restart playback when the source becomes active, but it is not the documented playlist source. If your existing loop is a sequence of clips, VLC Video is the relevant source type.

Why editing the active playlist can restart playback

There are two separate things to consider: the local clip playback in OBS and the stream connection being sent to YouTube. In the current OBS VLC source implementation, applying changes to the source stops its media-list player, replaces the list, and starts playback again if the source is active or configured to always play. That can send playback back to the beginning of the list even if you have not stopped the broadcast. See the OBS VLC source implementation.

An OBS forum user has also reported playback returning to the first video after adding an item to a VLC playlist. That is one user’s experience, not a guarantee that every setup behaves identically. The official documentation and implementation support treating an active-list edit as a restart risk; they do not establish a way to append a clip while preserving the exact current playhead.

Safer workflow: prepare a second source or scene

  1. Identify the active loop. In OBS, check the Sources dock and confirm whether the playlist is a VLC Video source. If the loop uses a different arrangement of scenes and sources, note how it is composed before making changes.
  2. Build the revised playlist separately. Add a second VLC Video source, or create a separate scene containing the revised playlist. Include the existing clips and the new product demo in the order you want. Do not edit the active playlist if restarting its playback would be a problem.
  3. Check the playlist options. Confirm the intended loop and shuffle settings. Check the source’s behavior when it is not visible: OBS provides stop and restart, pause and resume, or always play behavior. With stop and restart, showing the staged source may start it again from the beginning.
  4. Preview the staged version. Confirm that the files load, the order is correct, and the source behaves as expected before sending it to viewers. OBS documents adding sources to scenes in its Sources Guide.
  5. Switch at an acceptable point. At a clip boundary, or another point where a change is acceptable, switch to the staged source or scene. Leave the broadcast active; do not click Stop Streaming. Scene and source operations change OBS’s output composition, but the documentation does not promise a glitch-free transition for every setup.
  6. Verify the outgoing video. Check the OBS preview and, if available to you, YouTube Live Control Room to make sure the expected content is going out. Confirm the broadcast is still live.

The staged-source method is a practical way to avoid rebuilding the list currently playing, not a certified seamless handoff. Try it with your installed OBS and VLC versions before relying on it for an important broadcast. OBS’s Sources Guide explains how sources form the contents of scenes; it does not guarantee that every switch is free of a visible or audible interruption.

Options and tradeoffs

Approach Useful when Tradeoff
Edit the active VLC playlist You want the simplest update and can accept playback restarting. The current VLC source implementation stops and rebuilds the media list, then restarts playback.
Stage a second VLC source or scene You want to prepare and preview the changed loop before switching. It takes extra setup and a deliberate handoff; a seamless transition is not guaranteed.
Use Media Source for the demo The new demo is a single file or temporary standalone item. Media Source is not the documented VLC playlist workflow. Integrating it into a continuing loop requires additional scene or source control.

What to do if the update does not behave as expected

  • The clip list jumps back to the first item. You may have applied changes to the active VLC Video source. If preserving its playhead matters, avoid further edits to that active list; stage changes in a separate source or scene instead.
  • The staged source starts from the beginning when shown. Check its visibility behavior. A source set to stop and restart when hidden can begin again when it becomes visible. Choose and test the behavior that matches your handoff.
  • VLC Video is missing from the source list. Install VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as required by OBS’s Media Sources guidance.
  • The new video is not part of the loop. Confirm that you added it to the revised VLC Video playlist, rather than expecting a Media Source file to join a playlist automatically.
  • The transition is not smooth. A scene/source switch changes the output composition, and OBS does not promise every transition will be glitch-free. Test locally and choose a less sensitive handoff point if needed. Avoid treating a playlist edit and stopping the encoder as the same operation.
  • YouTube appears to disconnect. Check whether the broadcast itself remains live in OBS and YouTube Live Control Room. The local playlist behavior and YouTube’s encoder ingestion are distinct; YouTube’s HLS setup guidance concerns ingestion settings and does not establish that HLS is required for this playlist update.
