The simplest solution is a real Print this post button that opens the browser print dialog, combined with print-only CSS that hides navigation, sidebars, ads, comments and other page furniture. For a separate printable URL, editable previews, native PDF output or multi-post books, choose a plugin that matches that workflow.

Use the custom CSS method when the article markup is predictable and you only need a clean paper copy. Use a plugin when you need a separate endpoint, reader editing, templates, or an archive-scale export.
Add a print button without a plugin
1. Insert an accessible button
Place this near the post title or after the article content. Replace the class only if your theme uses a different naming convention.
<button class="print-post" type="button" onclick="window.print()">Print this post</button>A real button is keyboard-focusable and communicates its purpose better than a styled link. Add nearby help text such as “You can also use your browser’s Print command” so the action remains understandable if JavaScript is disabled.

These selectors are examples: inspect your active theme and substitute its actual article wrapper, header, navigation, sidebar, ad, consent and comment classes. Keep the title, author and date information, headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, code, captions and essential images. WordPress print-style guidance covers controlling colors, links, headings, titles, author information and metadata; styles can be loaded with a print-media stylesheet or enqueued through WordPress’s stylesheet functions.
3. Enqueue a dedicated print stylesheet (optional)
For a maintainable theme implementation, put the rules in a CSS file and enqueue it with a media value of print, rather than loading print rules on screen. A child theme is safer than editing a parent theme, because parent updates can overwrite changes.

Test the print view before publishing
- Open a long post at desktop and mobile widths and choose the browser’s Print command.
- Confirm that the preview contains the article title, author/date data and all required content, but no navigation, sidebar, ads, sharing controls, comments or consent banner.
- Check page breaks around long headings, tables, code blocks, figures and captions. The
break-insideandbreak-afterrules reduce awkward splits but cannot override every browser or printer limitation. - Verify that links remain readable and that essential images load. Test lazy-loaded images, galleries, embeds and dark-mode styles separately.
- Tab to the button and confirm a visible focus indicator. Test with JavaScript disabled and make sure the nearby browser-command instruction still helps.
- Repeat the check after changing the theme, page builder, advertising, consent or analytics components; any change can introduce new elements that need hiding.
Use WP-Print for a separate printable URL
WP-Print adds a print link to posts and pages and generates a clean document without the theme, sidebar or navigation. Its printable address follows the pattern /your-post/print/. It can include comments and media, supports [donotprint] sections, and allows theme overrides for print-posts.php, print-comments.php and print-css.css.
- Install and activate WP-Print after confirming that its current version supports your WordPress version.
- Configure which content, comments and media the printable document should include.
- After activation, open Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes so WordPress writes the plugin’s
/print/rewrite rule. - Open a post’s print URL and test exclusions, images, links and page breaks on desktop and mobile browsers.
Choose a managed print or PDF plugin
PrintFriendly

PostPDFButton
PostPDFButton works from the DOM already rendered in the visitor’s browser. It supports a print-target selector, exclusion selectors, paper size, orientation, margins, page-break controls and lazy-loaded images, making it useful when JavaScript changes the visible article. Its native-print model has an important limit: ordinary page JavaScript cannot silently choose the browser’s “Save as PDF” printer or bypass the print dialog; the visitor must complete that dialog.
Print My Blog
Print My Blog provides front-end buttons for print, PDF and eBook output. It can print one post or compile larger sets of posts, with buttons placed above, below or inside content using a shortcode. It is the strongest fit for documentation sites, archives and reading copies assembled from multiple posts.

Make the PDF expectation clear
A web button can open the native print dialog, where the visitor may select a printer or a PDF destination if the browser and operating system provide one. It cannot force a silent “Save as PDF” operation. Label the control “Print this post” unless your chosen tool actually supplies a separate PDF workflow, and explain the next dialog step when readers may otherwise expect an automatic download.
Maintenance checklist
- Keep the print target limited to the article rather than the entire document.
- Hide only non-content UI; do not remove citations, captions, warnings or other information readers need on paper.
- Use black text, a white background, readable margins and underlined links for grayscale printers.
- Retest after theme, page-builder, ad, cookie-consent or analytics changes.
- Review plugin updates and WordPress-version compatibility before deploying a new release.
- Decide whether browser-dependent output is acceptable for your audience; native print rendering varies by browser.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can WordPress create a PDF automatically when someone clicks the button?
A normal button can open the browser print dialog, where the visitor can choose a PDF printer. Ordinary page JavaScript cannot silently select that native PDF printer or bypass the dialog.

Why is my sidebar still appearing in print preview?
The print stylesheet is probably targeting the wrong class, or a later rule is overriding it. Inspect the live theme markup and add the actual sidebar selector under an @media print rule with sufficient specificity.
Should I hide comments and images?
Hide comments when they are not part of the article’s purpose. Keep essential images, captions and media; configure optional inclusion explicitly when using a separate printable endpoint such as WP-Print.
