To show podcast cover art throughout a YouTube live broadcast, add it to your OBS scene as an Image source. This puts the artwork in the video itself. A YouTube thumbnail is separate: it is set in YouTube’s stream settings, not by adding an OBS source.
Choose where the cover should appear
- In the broadcast video: Add an image source in OBS. Viewers see it as part of the stream wherever you position it in the scene.
- As the YouTube preview tile: Set the stream thumbnail in YouTube’s settings. This metadata is separate from the OBS picture, and changing one does not automatically change the other.
You can use both placements if you want the cover in the video and as the stream’s preview image.
Add the cover image in OBS
- Select the scene. In OBS, click the scene you plan to stream in the Scenes dock.
- Add an Image source. In the Sources dock, click +, choose Image, and select the cover file on your computer. OBS scenes are built from sources, including still images and slideshows; see the OBS Sources Guide.
- Position and size it. Select the image in the preview and drag it into place. Use its red bounding-box handles to resize it, or right-click the source and choose Edit Transform for more precise placement. Use Fit to Screen when the image should fill the canvas without casual stretching.
- Set the layer order. In the Sources list, move the cover above the background source if it should appear over the background. Sources higher in the list can cover sources below them.
- Check the composition. Confirm the artwork is not covering text or other important content and that it looks right at the intended size. Avoid stretching a square cover disproportionately, which can distort it.
The OBS documentation does not specify a required overlay resolution or file-size limit. Choose an image that looks clear at its displayed size, then inspect it in the scene preview.

Connect OBS to YouTube and check the preview
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and create or select the stream.
- In OBS’s streaming settings, enter the YouTube server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain this connection. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in the scene or include it in screenshots.
- Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the OBS feed to appear in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check the preview to confirm the cover’s position and size, and verify audio and video before clicking Go live. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring stream quality; see its live streaming tips.
Set a separate YouTube thumbnail if needed
If you also want cover art on YouTube’s preview tile, use the thumbnail control in the stream’s YouTube settings. That image is not the OBS overlay. YouTube’s thumbnail guidance for podcast playlists recommends a 1:1 aspect ratio and gives a 50 MB maximum desktop upload size; those figures concern podcast thumbnails, not OBS image sources. Troubleshoot common problems
- The cover does not appear in the broadcast: Confirm the correct scene is selected and that the Image source is visible. Move it above any source that is covering it.
- The image is behind the background: Move the cover higher in the Sources list; layer order determines what appears on top.
- The cover looks stretched: Resize proportionally or use Fit to Screen where appropriate. Avoid stretching a square image to fill a differently shaped canvas.
- The artwork is in OBS but not on the YouTube preview tile: Set the thumbnail separately in YouTube’s stream settings.
- The YouTube preview does not appear: Check that OBS is sending to the intended stream and that the server URL and stream key are entered correctly. Keep the key private.
