To show the track currently playing inside a YouTube live stream, the label must come from your music playback or playout system and be rendered into the live picture—usually as an OBS text or browser source, or as a hosted overlay. YouTube’s Music section is different: it may identify music on a watch page, but it is not documented as a creator-controlled, changing overlay in the video.
How a live now-playing label works
A changing label needs two things: usable track information and a way to place that information on the video. The information normally comes from metadata attached to an audio file or provided by a playout system. An OBS source or hosted overlay then displays the current title, artist, or other fields in the scene.
The playback method matters. A community OBS script documented for VLC reads metadata from a VLC video source; that does not establish that it can read music playing in a browser, YouTube Music, or every other audio source. First identify exactly where your stream’s audio comes from, then choose an integration that supports that source.
Choose an approach that matches your audio source

Set up the VLC-and-OBS method
This example is for audio files played through a VLC source in OBS. It is not a general method for reading tracks from any browser or music app. The add-on is community software, not official OBS documentation, so check its current installation instructions and compatibility before using it in an unattended stream.

- Confirm the playback path. In your OBS scene, identify whether the music is coming from a VLC video source. If the audio comes from YouTube Music or another browser player, do not assume the VLC-specific script can read it; check for an integration explicitly compatible with that playback source.
- Check track tags. Inspect the audio files for usable title and artist metadata. The VLC Now Playing Monitor says it reads audio tags and can fall back to the filename when metadata is unavailable, so a missing or poorly populated tag may produce an incomplete or untidy label.
- Check the add-on’s requirements. The cited VLC Now Playing Monitor resource lists Linux, OBS 27.0 or higher with Python scripting enabled, and Mutagen as optional but recommended. These are the requirements listed on that resource, not a guarantee of compatibility with every current operating system or OBS installation. Verify the add-on’s current instructions before installing it. Tuna is another community-documented OBS route; confirm its current plugin and VLC-source instructions as well.
- Connect the current-track output to the scene. The VLC Now Playing Monitor can optionally save the current song to a text file. Use the add-on’s instructions to connect its output to an OBS text source or other supported scene element. The exact connection depends on the integration; there is no universal setting established for every add-on.
- Style the label for the relaxation visual. Keep the text readable without making it the focus: use a clear typeface, adequate contrast, and a position that does not cover important visual elements. Preview it against both bright and dark portions of the scene.
- Test changes before leaving the stream unattended. Play several tracks, watch the displayed title and artist change, and check what appears when a file has missing tags. Confirm that the label remains visible in the live scene after the transition, rather than relying only on a successful test with one file.
Why YouTube’s Music section is not the same thing
YouTube Help describes the Music section as information about music heard in a video, such as song and artist names. YouTube says it may appear when music is claimed through its copyright-management tools or comes from the YouTube Audio Library. It can be absent if rights-holder data is insufficient, identification is incomplete, a claim is recent, or the video is marked Made for Kids. It should not be treated as a guaranteed on-screen label that changes with each track.
Track labels do not grant music permission
Naming a song does not establish that you have permission to use it in a live stream. YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with a label or distributor when using copyright-protected music during a live stream to avoid issues such as copyright strikes. Resolve the rights question separately from the overlay setup; displaying title and artist information is not a substitute for permission.
