For a cartoon playlist in OBS Studio, the straightforward way to show the current title is to play the files through an OBS VLC Video Source, use the Tuna plugin to write the selected media title to a text file, and display that file with an OBS Text Source. This creates a title overlay; it does not guarantee uninterrupted broadcasting or provide permission to rebroadcast cartoons.
What you need
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on the computer running the stream. OBS says the VLC Video Source requires VLC, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Confirm that VLC Video Source appears in OBS’s Sources add menu. OBS VLC Video Source documentation
- Tuna, a third-party OBS plugin that can read information from an OBS VLC source and format selected information for output. Follow the plugin’s current installation instructions and check compatibility with your OBS build and operating system before relying on it. Tuna project
- Cartoon video files whose metadata, or a separate title mapping you maintain, identifies the episode you want displayed. OBS cannot infer a meaningful episode title from the video image.
Set up the playlist and title overlay

Add and configure the cartoon playlist
In OBS, add a VLC Video Source and load the cartoon files into its playlist. Enable Loop Playlist if the source should restart after reaching the end. Point Tuna at the correct VLC source
Open Tuna’s settings and select the OBS scene and VLC source that contain the cartoons. Tuna’s project documentation includes VLC-source support and configurable output strings for title or “now playing” information. Check the settings against the plugin version you install; third-party plugin compatibility is not established for every OBS package or operating system. Tuna project

Choose the output file and title format
Configure Tuna to write its output to a text file, then select the title field or an appropriate formatting string. The OBS forum resource describes choosing an output file and formatting the text. Available fields depend on the source; a file with missing or unhelpful title metadata cannot provide a reliable episode name just because Tuna is enabled. Tuna OBS resource

Display Tuna’s file in OBS
Add an OBS Text source and enable its file-reading option, then browse to Tuna’s output file. In the Sources list, place the Text source above the VLC Video Source so it renders over the cartoon. Test transitions before going live
Play several files and check the displayed title at each playlist change. If it stays blank or shows the wrong title, inspect the file’s metadata, confirm Tuna is monitoring the intended VLC source, and verify that the text source points to Tuna’s actual output file. Test on the host and installed software versions that will run the stream.

Make the displayed title dependable
The overlay can show only the information Tuna receives or a title supplied through another reliable mapping. Metadata quality can vary across a library, so inspect representative files rather than assuming every cartoon has an embedded episode name. If the available title field is missing or inaccurate, correct the metadata or use a maintained mapping that your overlay integration can read.

Separate the overlay from 24/7 reliability and rebroadcast rights
A looping playlist and a working title overlay do not establish that a broadcast will stay live continuously, recover after a failure, or meet YouTube’s requirements for a continuous stream. The OBS and Tuna documentation describes playback and overlay behavior, not failover or uninterrupted operation. Check the requirements that apply to your YouTube live setup and test the full broadcast path before depending on it.
Also confirm that you have the rights needed to stream each cartoon and any associated audio. Technical ability to play a file in OBS does not grant permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s copyright and reused-content rules are separate from the title-overlay setup.

Troubleshoot common title problems
