To show a “now playing” label on a podcast YouTube livestream, add an overlay webpage to your OBS scene as a Browser Source—or add an OBS Text Source and update it yourself. First decide what the label should show: an episode currently being discussed, or a music track playing during the stream. Those are different kinds of metadata, and an automatic track overlay may not know which podcast episode is on screen.

Choose what “now playing” means for your stream

Before choosing an overlay, identify the information you want viewers to see. An episode title usually needs episode metadata from a compatible integration or a label you maintain. A music-track title can update automatically if an overlay provider is connected to a player that reports track changes.

  • Podcast episode: Use an integration only if it explicitly receives the episode title you want displayed. Otherwise, use an OBS Text Source and change the text when the discussion moves to another episode.
  • Music track: A track-oriented overlay may update when its connected player reports a new track. Confirm the provider supports your player and intended display before relying on it during a live broadcast.

The reviewed Now Playing setup documentation describes track changes, not universal podcast-episode detection. No universal podcast-player-to-OBS episode overlay is established by the available documentation.

Add an automatic overlay in OBS

Get and test the overlay URL

  1. In the overlay provider’s dashboard, locate the overlay page and copy its URL. The Now Playing dashboard guide also provides recommended Browser Source dimensions and a preview that can send a sample track.
  2. Use the preview or test mode, if available, to check what information the overlay displays. Confirm it is the intended track metadata; do not assume it will show the podcast episode under discussion.

Add it as a Browser Source

  1. Open OBS Studio and select the scene where the label should appear.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Browser (Browser Source). Create a new source or select an existing one.
  3. Paste the overlay URL into the source’s URL field. Set the width and height to the dimensions recommended by the provider, or to a size appropriate for your scene.
  4. Position and resize the source on the canvas. Keep it clear of the host, captions, and other important content.
  5. Check the source’s order in the Sources list. It must be above the video layer it would otherwise be hidden behind.
  6. Preview the scene at your stream’s output resolution. Verify the text is readable and the overlay shows the right information before going live.

OBS’s Sources Guide describes Browser Sources for adding webpages to a scene and Text Sources for customizable text. The Now Playing provider’s setup guide explains using its overlay URL in OBS or compatible streaming software without plugins or scripts; its dashboard guide describes the URL, recommended size, and sample-track preview.

Show a podcast episode with a manual OBS label

If the overlay source does not report the episode title, a manually maintained label is the straightforward fallback.

  1. In OBS, select the podcast scene. In Sources, select +, then choose a Text source (the exact label or available text backend can vary by system).
  2. Enter the episode title and any other concise details you want viewers to see. Use the source’s text and styling controls to make it legible against the scene.
  3. Place the text where it does not cover the host or other essential information, and ensure the source is above the video layer.
  4. When you move to a different episode, edit the Text Source before discussing it. Preview the updated scene to catch stale text or layout problems.

OBS documents Text Sources as customizable text. This method requires producer input; it does not automatically discover episode changes.

Choose an overlay method that fits your workflow

Method Metadata and updates Best fit Check before going live
Track-oriented overlay webpage Can update automatically when its connected player reports a track change; podcast episode detection is not established by the cited setup guide. A stream that needs changing music-track information. Confirm the connected player and metadata are supported; test with a sample track and check what appears if the page or data source stops updating.
OBS Text Source Displays text you enter; update it manually when the episode changes. A podcast episode label when no verified automatic episode integration is available. Check that the title is current, readable, and positioned correctly.
Another widget provider Depends on the selected widget and its actual data source. When its metadata and visual controls meet your needs. Verify it supplies episode metadata—not just a generic overlay—and test the widget URL and dimensions.

Streamlabs describes adding a widget URL to OBS or another supported streaming application as a Browser Source, then sizing and positioning it on the canvas in its widget URL guide. Its overlay guide also describes a library and plugin route for bringing Streamlabs overlays into OBS Studio. Treat these as ways to place an overlay; verify that the particular widget provides the podcast metadata you need. OBS likewise notes that third-party alert overlays can be embedded through a Browser Source in its overview.

Troubleshoot a missing, stale, or unreadable label

  • The label does not appear: Check that the Browser Source URL is correct and that the source is visible and above the relevant video layer. Reopen the provider’s preview to see whether its page is returning content.
  • The overlay shows a track but not the episode: The connected integration may report music-track changes rather than podcast episode metadata. Use a verified episode integration or switch to a manually updated Text Source.
  • The label is stale: Check whether the connected player is reporting a new track and whether the overlay page is updating. If the source cannot provide the episode title, update the text yourself when the episode changes.
  • The text is too small or covers the host: Adjust the Browser Source dimensions or its position and size on the canvas; preview again at the output resolution.
  • You see the wrong text after changing scenes or episodes: Confirm the scene contains the intended source and, for a Text Source, replace the old episode title before continuing.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your podcast livestream uses uploaded recordings and should keep running on YouTube while your computer is off, StreamNeo can loop the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not add a now-playing overlay: keep the OBS or provider setup above for labels, and use StreamNeo for the always-on uploaded-video stream.
