To show the episode currently playing inside a 24/7 YouTube stream, add the label to the video before it reaches YouTube. In OBS, place a Text source above the episode video and set it to read a plain-text file; have your playout or scheduling system update that file whenever the episode changes. OBS can display the file’s contents, but a playlist alone does not automatically connect its current item to the label.
Put the episode label in the video feed
A now-playing label is an on-screen overlay, not the stream’s YouTube title. Changing the title in YouTube Studio changes stream metadata; it does not put the current episode name over the video. For an encoder workflow, compose the video and label in OBS, then send that combined output to YouTube.
Set up a file-backed text label in OBS
- Add the program video. In your production scene, add the media source or other source that supplies the episode video.
- Add a Text source. In the Sources panel, choose the text source appropriate to your operating system. Enable Read from file and select a plain-text file containing the episode title. See the OBS Text Sources guide for the documented text-source options.
- Place the label in front. Position the Text source above the video source in the Sources list. Sources higher in the list appear above lower sources, according to the OBS Sources Guide. Move and resize the label in the preview so it does not cover important picture content.
- Connect the title to playout. Arrange for the system that schedules or starts each episode to replace the text file’s contents with the correct title when the current episode changes. Keep the file in a stable location and use a predictable title format. OBS documents reading text from a file; the process that updates the file is a separate workflow you must provide.
- Test a transition. While previewing the scene, change the file to a different title and confirm that OBS displays the new text in the right place and that it remains readable over the video. Test the update process after a restart as well as during normal playback.
- Send the composed scene to YouTube. Configure OBS as your encoder with the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, then start sending the feed. YouTube’s instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Make the label easy to read and maintain
Use a concise episode title, strong contrast against varied picture backgrounds, and a size that remains legible on a phone. Preview it over bright and dark scenes. Decide in advance what the label should show during gaps, missing metadata, or a failed file update; a blank or stale title can mislead viewers. These are production choices rather than OBS-guaranteed behaviors.
Choose between a text file and a browser overlay
| Approach | Best suited to | What it requires | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Text source reading a file | A simple, legible episode title | A process that writes the current title to a plain-text file | The file-backed source does not itself know which playlist item is playing. |
| OBS Browser source | A more designed overlay, such as a label with custom layout | A webpage that renders the title and a reliable way for playout to supply the current item | OBS can display a webpage or local page, but the page still needs a metadata feed. See OBS Browser Source. |
Choose based on how your playout system exposes current-item information, how the label recovers after a restart, how quickly a change appears, and whether an operator can correct a wrong title without interrupting the stream. The cited OBS documentation establishes the display components, not a ready-made integration or a tested metadata bridge.

Do not assume a playlist supplies the label
OBS documents a VLC Video source that can play a list of media files, loop it, and keep items in their listed order. VLC must be installed for that source to appear in OBS. The OBS Media Sources guide does not document a built-in feature that writes the current VLC playlist item into a text file or browser overlay.
That means a looping playlist and a now-playing label are separate pieces. You need a metadata bridge: for example, configure the scheduling or playout system to update the file, or to serve a webpage, whenever it changes the current item. Confirm that the title and playback transition stay in sync, including after a restart. Do not advertise the label as automatic unless your actual playout setup reliably supplies that information.

Meet YouTube’s live-streaming requirements
- YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its current general guidance also lists limits of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key; these operational limits can change, so check YouTube’s live-streaming help before configuring a production channel.
- First-time live-streaming activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. Allow time to enable and test the feature before a scheduled launch.
- YouTube supports both software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. A hardware encoder is optional; it is not needed just to add an episode label.
- YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is not a guarantee that one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will be archived as a single recording. Plan recording and archive needs separately if they matter.
- Mark the audience correctly in YouTube Studio or through the relevant API setting. The YouTube Live Streaming API reference includes a made-for-kids status field; the cited reference does not establish which chat, discovery, or monetization features will be available for an individual stream. Check YouTube’s current audience-specific guidance for those consequences.
- Use only video and audio you have the rights to stream, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright rules. Correct audience labeling and rights clearance are separate from displaying an episode title.
Troubleshoot a missing, stale, or incorrect label
- No label appears: Confirm the Text source is enabled, Read from file is selected, the path points to the intended file, and the source is visible in the scene.
- The video covers the label: Move the Text source above the video in the Sources list; higher sources are layered in front.
- The title does not change: Check that the external playout or scheduling process actually updates the file OBS is reading, and that it writes the intended title to the same path. A playlist change by itself is not documented as updating the overlay.
- The title belongs to the previous episode: Check the timing and trigger used by the metadata bridge. Test transition timing and decide whether to update the label at the start of playback or at another defined point.
- The browser overlay is blank or outdated: Check that its selected webpage or local file loads, then check the separate mechanism that supplies the title. A Browser source renders a page; it does not automatically discover playlist metadata.
- The stream does not reach YouTube: Confirm the server URL and stream key in OBS match the values shown in YouTube Studio, and check that the channel can currently stream. Do not expose the stream key in a public overlay, file served to viewers, or shared screenshot.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded episodes while your computer is off, StreamNeo runs that uploaded-video stream in the cloud. The setup is upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and sends to YouTube only.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Nothing has to stay on at home for the cloud stream to keep running.
- Each slot streams the uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.
- Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
For a kids’ stream, confirm how your chosen playout workflow supplies and updates episode-title metadata before relying on it for an overlay; a looping cloud playlist alone should not be assumed to generate a now-playing label. Start your free StreamNeo day.
