Keep your radio music running as a separate audio source, then add and control your microphone independently in an encoder such as OBS Studio. For each announcement, unmute the mic—or use push-to-talk—and mute it again afterward. YouTube’s break overlay is a visual slate; it does not mix or mute audio for you.
Set up the microphone without interrupting the radio audio
- Preserve the existing music source. In OBS, keep the source that supplies your continuous radio audio active in the scene. Avoid replacing it with the microphone or relying on a scene that does not include the music.
- Add the microphone as a separate input. In the OBS scene, select + in the Sources panel and add an Audio Input Capture source; choose the microphone you want to use. Labels and exact menus can vary by OBS version and operating system. OBS documents device capture in its Audio Sources guide.
- Check for a moving meter. Speak into the mic and watch its level in the OBS Audio Mixer. Adjust the mic level so your voice is clear alongside the music, then listen through monitoring or make a short recording. A meter moving is useful, but listening confirms the actual balance.
- Prevent duplicate microphone capture. If the same microphone is selected both as a scene source and under Settings → Audio, OBS can capture it twice and produce echo. Disable one of those routes. See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide.
- Choose how to open the mic. For manual control, use the microphone’s mixer mute button. For hands-free music operation, configure a push-to-talk or push-to-mute hotkey in OBS settings. Test the control before going live; the radio source should remain active when you mute or unmute the microphone. OBS describes mic hotkeys in its Overview Guide.
Deliver the mixed audio to YouTube
YouTube’s encoder workflow is intended for streams using external audio and video equipment, including microphones. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s stream settings. Keep the key private: it authorizes an encoder to send to your channel. YouTube’s Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder guide explains the connection process.
Before relying on the setup, test with the actual music and a representative voice break. Check the stream preview and listen to the output, not just the individual source meters. YouTube recommends testing similar audio and continuously monitoring streams in its live streaming tips.

Make a voice break while music continues
- Confirm the radio/music source is still active and audible.
- Unmute the microphone or hold your push-to-talk key, then make the announcement.
- Mute the microphone or release the push-to-talk key as soon as the break ends.
- Listen briefly to the stream output to confirm the mic is closed and the music continues.
A single radio scene with the mic independently muted or unmuted is usually the simplest arrangement. You can use a separate scene for a break, but include the music source in that scene or route it independently; otherwise, switching scenes may cut the program audio. OBS explains scene-specific device sources in its Audio Sources guide.

Do not confuse a voice break with YouTube’s break overlay
YouTube’s Live Control Room break overlay is a visual slate for when you step away. It does not mute, mix, or otherwise change the encoder’s audio sources. If you use the overlay, mute your microphone yourself when leaving; if the slate video has sound, that audio must also be included in the encoder mix. The overlay is not the control for speaking over uninterrupted radio music. See YouTube’s Monetize your live stream guidance.
Choose a microphone input that fits your setup
- USB microphone: A straightforward option when your computer can use it as an audio input device. Select that device as the OBS input.
- XLR microphone: It may need a compatible audio interface or mixer before the computer can capture it. Whether additional hardware is needed depends on the equipment already in your setup.
The documented setup supports microphone capture generally; it does not establish a best model or sound-quality ranking. Choose based on connection compatibility and your room and noise conditions.

Troubleshoot common voice-break problems
- The mic meter does not move: Check that OBS is using the intended input device, that the microphone is connected and enabled for the operating system, and that its input level is not turned down. Speak again while watching the mixer.
- Your voice echoes: Check whether the microphone is captured both as a scene source and globally under Settings → Audio. Disable one duplicate capture route.
- The music stops when you switch scenes: The destination scene may not contain the radio audio source. Add it to that scene or keep the music routed independently; alternatively, use one scene and mute the mic from the mixer.
- The mic stays open after the announcement: Confirm the mixer mute state or test the push-to-talk/push-to-mute hotkey and its assigned key. Do a test break before depending on it live.
- You hear the mic locally but not on the stream: Check the encoder’s stream preview and output mix, then make a short test recording or stream. Confirm that the microphone is included in the audio sent to YouTube.
- The YouTube break slate appears but audio carries on: That is expected; the overlay is visual. Mute the mic with the encoder’s control when stepping away.
