To add a moderator, open the person’s message menu in the YouTube app and choose Add as standard moderator or Add as managing moderator. Alternatively, in the YouTube Studio app, go to Settings → Community, enter the person’s channel URL in the relevant moderator box, and save. The role remains in place until you remove the person.
Choose the right moderator role
YouTube describes a moderator as someone you trust to help build a positive, safe channel experience. Choose the least powerful role that gives the person the tools they need.

YouTube’s current instructions are in Moderate live chat. Assigning a managing moderator expands their chat permissions; it does not grant channel-management access.

- Open the channel’s live stream and its live chat.
- Find a message from the person you want to appoint and open the message menu.
- Select Add as standard moderator or Add as managing moderator.
The person needs to have participated in chat for this route, because you select them from a message. If you cannot find a message from them, use YouTube Studio’s Community settings instead.

Add a moderator in YouTube Studio
- Open the YouTube Studio app and go to Settings → Community.
- Under the Automated Filters tab, find the Standard moderator or Managing moderators box, depending on the role you are assigning.
- Enter the person’s channel URL and save.
Use the channel URL to identify the intended account rather than relying on a display name that another user might share. YouTube’s interface labels can change over time, so if a label differs, consult its moderator instructions.
What moderators can do during a stream
Remove messages and manage disruptive users
Moderators can remove chat content, place a user in timeout, or hide a user from the channel. YouTube lists timeout choices of 10 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, and 24 hours. Hiding a user makes that person’s chat messages and comments invisible to other viewers; YouTube says the user is not notified. See YouTube’s moderator guidance and its timeout details.

Review messages held for moderation
YouTube can hold messages its systems identify as potentially inappropriate. A moderator can show or hide a held message. If nobody acts on it, it stays hidden. YouTube cautions that no system is perfect, so automated review can reduce the queue but cannot guarantee that every harmful message is caught. Read YouTube’s live chat moderation controls.
Pair human coverage with chat controls
- Blocked words: Add terms in YouTube Studio’s Community settings. Messages containing or closely matching those terms can be blocked.
- Slow mode: Set a wait interval between viewer messages in Live Control Room to limit rapid posting. The channel owner, moderators, and channel members are not subject to the viewer limit.
- Participation modes: You can use modes such as subscriber-only or members-only chat when they suit the station’s community. A restriction may also make it harder for new listeners to join the conversation.
- Held messages: Have moderators check the review queue and decide whether to show or hide held messages; unreviewed messages remain hidden.
These settings can reduce repetitive work, but they are not a substitute for trusted human attention if your station needs active moderation. YouTube’s guidance on live chat moderation explains the available controls.

Plan coverage for a 24/7 station
YouTube does not prescribe a moderator staffing ratio or coverage schedule for continuous streams. Decide what response time your community needs, then arrange named coverage periods and explicit handoffs. Make sure the incoming moderator knows who is on duty, where to find the chat controls, and how your team handles removals, timeouts, and escalations.
Do not assume every listener can participate in chat: YouTube says Live Chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players. Viewers listening through an embedded player may not have the same access to the conversation. See YouTube’s live chat availability information.
