To add custom service-worker behavior while keeping Angular’s caching and update handling, create a worker script that imports ./ngsw-worker.js first, add your event listeners, include the file in the build output, and register it with provideServiceWorker(). Use ngsw-config.json instead when you only need to change which resources Angular caches or how it caches them.
Choose between cache configuration and a custom worker
Start by identifying what the application needs to do. Angular’s service-worker configuration file controls asset and data caching policies. If the requirement is to change cache matching or policy, configure it there rather than adding event-handling code.
A custom script is for behavior beyond those configured policies, such as handling notification clicks or background synchronization. Angular describes its service worker as a basic caching utility for simple offline support, says it will accept no new features apart from security fixes, and recommends native browser APIs for more advanced caching and offline needs. See Angular’s service worker and PWA overview before choosing an approach.
- Change what is cached: adjust asset or data groups in
ngsw-config.json. - Respond to browser events: extend Angular’s worker with a custom script.
- Build advanced caching or offline behavior: evaluate native browser APIs and take responsibility for that additional behavior.
Create the custom worker script
Place the custom script in the application source and import Angular’s worker before adding custom logic. This preserves access to Angular’s caching and update functionality while allowing the script to register additional event listeners.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
importScripts('./ngsw-worker.js');
(() => {
self.addEventListener('notificationclick', (event) => {
event.waitUntil(
// Add notification-click behavior here.
Promise.resolve()
);
});
self.addEventListener('sync', (event) => {
if (event.tag === 'my-background-sync') {
event.waitUntil(
// Add background-sync work here.
Promise.resolve()
);
}
});
})();
The handlers above show where to add application-specific work; they are not complete notification or synchronization implementations. For asynchronous work, pass its promise to event.waitUntil() so the browser knows the operation is still in progress. Handle rejected promises and other failures deliberately, and keep the code inside an IIFE to reduce global-scope pollution. Angular’s custom service worker scripts guide documents the extension pattern and event examples.
Include the file in the build and register it
The custom script must be served from the application’s build output. Add it to the assets in the project’s Angular build configuration, then register its deployed path with provideServiceWorker(). The exact asset entry and path depend on the project configuration, so confirm where the file is emitted before choosing the registration string.

provideServiceWorker('custom-sw.js', {
// Optional SwRegistrationOptions go here.
})
Configure this provider with the application’s providers, following the setup used by the project. The provideServiceWorker API accepts a script path and optional registration options. Angular documents options for enabling registration, choosing a classic or module script, setting scope and update-via-cache behavior, and controlling registration timing. The documented default strategy is registerWhenStable:30000; check the API documentation for the Angular version in use.
Check cache rules before debugging the custom code
A request that behaves unexpectedly may be affected by Angular’s cache configuration rather than the custom event handler. Angular considers asset groups in order; for data requests, the first matching data group handles the request. Put more specific data groups before broader ones. Also check URL patterns: glob patterns can partially match URLs, and some regular-expression characters may need escaping. The details are in Angular’s configuration documentation.

Test the production build and deployment
- Set up the standard Angular service worker if needed. Angular’s getting started guide documents
ng add @angular/pwa, creation ofngsw-config.json, and local testing with a production configuration. - Build and serve the production version. Verify that the custom script is present at the path used by
provideServiceWorker(), and test the events your application relies on. - Use a private or incognito window for a clean test. Existing service-worker registrations and cached state can affect results; Angular recommends private-window testing.
- Test on the browsers your application supports. Service workers require a secure context in deployment: use HTTPS, with localhost as the development exception. Account for browsers that do not support the required APIs.
Angular’s custom-worker guidance recommends testing in both development and production and handling errors gracefully. The service worker must also be in the intended scope for the pages it serves; confirm the deployed script path and registration settings against the application’s routing and hosting setup.

Browsers install an updated service worker when its script is byte-different. Changing only response headers does not trigger a new installation. Angular’s service-worker deployment guidance describes using a versioned script URL when a header-only change needs to trigger installation.

Angular also documents a failsafe for removing unwanted service-worker registrations and caches: rename or remove ngsw.json and use the package’s safety-worker.js. This is an operational recovery measure, not a routine update step; validate the procedure for the application’s deployment before using it.
