Add CSS in the Site Editor’s Styles → Additional CSS for a block theme, or Appearance → Customize → Additional CSS for a classic theme that exposes the Customizer. Use a visible, usable scrollbar, and test your styling in the browsers and devices your visitors use.
Choose CSS or a plugin

If your project already uses a child theme or a site-specific CSS mechanism, that can be a maintainable place for the rules. Avoid editing a parent theme’s files directly because theme updates can overwrite changes.
Add CSS in WordPress
- For a block theme: Open the Site Editor, go to Styles, and choose Additional CSS. WordPress documents CSS in the Styles area as available from WordPress 6.2 onward.
- For a classic theme with the Customizer: Go to Appearance → Customize → Additional CSS.
- Paste the CSS, publish or save the changes, then inspect the page in a browser. If your theme does not provide the Customizer, use its supported CSS workflow or a site-specific mechanism already in use.
Style the page scrollbar
The following example combines standards-based color and width properties with detailed WebKit scrollbar selectors. Adjust the colors to suit your design while keeping the thumb distinct from its track.

Style one scrollable panel instead
If only a particular panel needs a custom scrollbar, give that element its own overflow and scrollbar rules. This avoids changing unrelated scrollbars in textareas, menus, or nested components.

}Change .article-panel to the selector for your actual scroll container. The panel also needs a constrained size and overflow for scrolling to occur.

Account for browser differences
::-webkit-scrollbar is a vendor-specific styling mechanism. The standardized scrollbar-width property controls thickness with auto, thin, or none; scrollbar-color controls color where supported. These properties do not provide the same detailed styling as the WebKit pseudo-elements. MDN notes that browsers may ignore WebKit scrollbar styling when an element’s computed scrollbar-width is not auto, so do not assume that both methods combine identically. See MDN’s scrollbar-width reference and MDN’s scrollbar-color reference.
- Review the result in a current Chrome- or Safari-family browser and Firefox, as well as on a mobile device.
- Check vertical and horizontal overflow, keyboard and touch scrolling, and zoom.
- If the site supports dark mode, check both color schemes; also check high-contrast or forced-color settings.
Keep the scrollbar accessible
Do not use scrollbar-width: none for content that still scrolls. MDN advises against it because hiding the scrollbar can harm accessibility; a visitor may not realize that visually clipped content is available. Keep the thumb visible against the track and retain a usable hit area. A narrow scrollbar should not be the only way to scroll: confirm that wheel, touch, and keyboard scrolling still work.

Use a plugin for no-code controls
WordPress’s official plugin listings describe two no-code options. The Scrollbar plugin listing describes installing and activating the plugin, then using its “Scrollbar Option Settings” area. It advertises controls including color, width, border radius, scroll speed, border, touch-device behavior, and auto-hide.
The Advanced Scrollbar plugin listing describes this route: install and activate the plugin, open Settings → Advanced Scrollbar, customize the options, and save. Its listing includes settings for color, width, background, speed, alignment, borders, and rounded corners. Listings and plugin features can change, so review the current plugin details and settings before using one.

Troubleshoot scrollbar styling
- Nothing changes: Inspect the page to find which element actually scrolls. A nested container with
overflow-y: automay need the rules instead ofhtml. - Your styles are overridden: Check CSS specificity and load order. Theme or page-builder rules may take precedence.
- Firefox does not show the detailed design: Set
scrollbar-colorandscrollbar-widthon the scrolling element. WebKit pseudo-elements are not a cross-browser replacement for these properties. - A plugin changes every scrollbar: Review its settings and generated CSS, then scope or override its rules if possible. Confirm it has not disabled the default scrollbar width.
- The custom design is hard to use: Recheck touch scrolling, keyboard access, zoom, and high-contrast or forced-color behavior, and increase contrast or the thumb’s usable area as needed.
