To show a countdown to viewers, add it to the scene your encoder sends to YouTube. In OBS Studio, the simplest method is to add a timer webpage as a Browser source, position it on your canvas, then check the YouTube preview before going live. A timer open in a separate window on your computer will not appear in the broadcast unless it is part of the outgoing scene.
What you need
- OBS Studio or another encoder that can include a browser page in its scene.
- A timer page that provides a browser-view URL, or a timer page hosted locally on your computer.
- A YouTube live stream set up in Live Control Room, with its stream URL and stream key.
The exact timer URL, design, transparency, and start or reset controls depend on the timer you choose. OBS can load web pages from a URL or from your local machine, but it does not prescribe how a timer page behaves. OBS Browser Source documentation
Add the countdown in OBS
- Select the scene. In OBS, choose the scene that will show the countdown. Create one if you do not already have a suitable scene.
- Add a Browser source. In the Sources dock, select the plus button and choose Browser. Enter the timer page URL. If you use a locally hosted timer, follow its instructions for entering the local page.
- Set the browser viewport. Set the source width and height to suit the timer layout. OBS documents 800 × 600 as the Browser source default; that is a default viewport, not a required video resolution. OBS Browser Source documentation
- Position and size the timer. Place it on the OBS canvas and resize it so it remains within the visible area. Keep it clear of the host, captions, and important video content.
- Check the timer’s appearance and behavior. If the page has an unwanted background or controls, check whether its provider offers a transparent overlay view or display settings. Confirm whether it starts automatically or needs a manual start, and how it can be reset. These controls vary by timer.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and select or create the stream in Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. YouTube uses the key to authorize the encoder’s feed; treat it as private. YouTube encoder setup · Manage live stream settings
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. Confirm that the timer appears in the right place and that the picture and sound are correct. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then select Go live. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. YouTube encoder settings and testing
Choose a timer that fits the stream
A browser-based timer URL is convenient when you want to add a page directly to an OBS scene. A locally available timer page or script may suit a setup that needs to work without an internet connection, provided it is available to OBS and you can manage its start and reset behavior. Compare options on the details that affect your show:
- Transparency: Can the timer render over your scene without an opaque box?
- Start and reset: Does it begin automatically, or must you start it manually? Can you reset it between events?
- Control: Do you need to operate it remotely, or is local control enough?
- Offline use: Does it keep working if the internet connection drops?
- Appearance: Can you adjust the dimensions and style to fit your scene?
- Audio: Does it need an alert, and if so, will that sound reach the stream through your audio setup?
TimerBox describes copying a generated URL into an OBS Browser source, while a Stagetimer tutorial demonstrates a browser timer with a transparent background. These are examples from the providers, not independent tests or guarantees that every timer supports those features. TimerBox · Stagetimer tutorial

Starting Soon countdowns and YouTube’s break overlay
A creator-designed countdown is different from YouTube’s break overlay. The break overlay is intended to show an away slate while you take a break; it is not a substitute for a custom “Starting Soon” countdown. YouTube’s documented setup uses a Browser source in the encoder and recommends testing the overlay with the Take a Break flow. The overlay does not control stream audio, so check your microphone and other audio sources separately. YouTube break overlay help
Troubleshoot a countdown that is missing or wrong
- The timer does not appear in OBS: Confirm the correct scene is selected, the Browser source has the intended URL, and its width and height are nonzero and large enough for the page. OBS Browser Source documentation
- The timer has a background or unwanted controls: Check the timer provider’s display settings or look for a supported transparent overlay URL. Transparency is not universal; for example, it is demonstrated in the Stagetimer tutorial, but that does not mean every timer offers it. Stagetimer tutorial
- You can see it locally, but viewers cannot: Verify that the timer is in the scene being sent to the encoder and inspect the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room before starting the broadcast. YouTube encoder settings and testing
- The steps do not match your encoder: Browser-source support differs among encoders. Check your encoder’s current help rather than assuming OBS instructions apply. YouTube break overlay help
- You think the stream key may be exposed: Keep it private. A YouTube owner or manager can reset the key in Live Control Room. Manage live stream settings
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos rather than show a countdown on a camera-based broadcast, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
