To show the song currently playing, add a now-playing overlay to the video sent to YouTube. In OBS, that is commonly a browser-source overlay in your scene; in hosted playout, it may be a built-in Now Playing element. The overlay must get current-track information from the system playing the music and update when that system advances. YouTube’s broadcast title describes the live video, not each track.
How the track title gets onto the stream
There are three separate pieces: the player or playlist plays the music, a source identifies the current track, and a graphic or text overlay puts that information into the outgoing video. YouTube receives the composed video; a title in the broadcast’s metadata is not a substitute for an in-picture label.
- Music source: Identify the system that actually plays the audio, such as an OBS-managed playlist or a hosted playout service.
- Track data: Determine where the title and, if available, artist come from: playback detection, a playlist or chapter list, or the media file’s metadata.
- Overlay: Add the displayed information to the video composition sent to YouTube.
The key test is whether the information source advances in step with the audio. A visually attractive overlay can still show the wrong song if it reads metadata from a different player or playlist.

A browser-source overlay is a practical route when OBS builds the video scene. The browser source displays the overlay; it is distinct from a browser source that plays the music. Make sure the overlay’s title input is tied to the audio source you actually use, and that it updates when the playlist moves to its next item.

The Music on Stream community resource listing describes a browser-based current-song overlay, styling options, and support for several named services, including YouTube, YouTube Music, Spotify, SoundCloud, Deezer, Pretzel, and Epidemic Sound. It also describes YouTube chapters and video-description playlists as possible title inputs, and says the overlay hides automatically when music pauses. The listing was created April 12, 2024, and reports a last update of September 18, 2025. Treat these as capabilities reported by the listing, not a guarantee for every source or playlist setup. Check the tool’s current installation instructions and confirm its behavior with your specific audio source before relying on it.
- Choose the title source. Decide whether the overlay will read detected playback information, a chapter or playlist list, or another supported source. Do not assume that any YouTube playlist embedded in an arbitrary OBS scene exposes usable, synchronized metadata.
- Add the overlay to the OBS scene. Use the overlay’s current instructions to add its browser content as a browser source. Exact controls can vary by OBS version and overlay tool, so follow the tool’s current documentation rather than relying on a guessed menu path.
- Position and style it. Place the title where it remains legible without obscuring important video content. If the tool supports artist text, decide whether to show it alongside the title.
- Test a track transition. Start the stream privately or otherwise test the scene before relying on it publicly. Confirm the displayed title changes when the actual music advances, and check what appears when playback pauses or metadata is missing.
Option 2: Use a hosted playout Now Playing element
If the music rotation already runs inside a hosted playout system, its built-in Now Playing overlay may be the simpler fit. Playout.video’s guide says its overlay reads media-file metadata and updates as content rotates. It also notes that repeating the same item in a loop does not trigger a different Now Playing display. The guide is dated July 9, 2026; check the current interface and controls before following it.

This approach is most relevant when the hosted system schedules and plays the music itself. If audio playback happens somewhere else, first establish whether the hosted overlay can read that source’s current-item data. Metadata attached to a media file must also be present and useful if the overlay depends on it.
Choose by the data path, not the overlay’s appearance
Before committing to either approach, trace how audio and title information travel through your setup. The available descriptions document examples, not comparative tests, so they do not establish that one option is inherently more accurate or reliable.

- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.

- Where does the music play? Use an overlay connected to that player or playout system, rather than one that follows a separate source.
- Where does the title come from? Confirm whether it is detected during playback, read from chapters or a playlist, or taken from file metadata.
- Does it change at transitions? Test a normal track change and a repeated item. A loop of the same file may not produce a new Now Playing display.
- Is it in the outgoing picture? Check the composed video, not just the overlay tool’s own preview or the YouTube broadcast title.
Why changing the YouTube broadcast title is not enough
YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes a live broadcast as a resource for a live event, with a title for the broadcast video. The official documentation says, “The broadcast represents exactly one YouTube video.” The API overview distinguishes the live stream sent by the channel owner from the broadcast viewers see. These are video-level details; the cited documentation does not describe the broadcast title as a field that automatically changes for each song.
For a track label viewers can see in the picture, use an overlay whose data source follows the music. Repeatedly editing the broadcast title is not a dependable substitute for that arrangement.

Troubleshoot a title that is missing or wrong
- The overlay never shows a title: Check that the selected source exposes title information and that the overlay is connected to it. Confirm whether the title must come from chapters, a playlist, or file metadata.
- The title stays on the previous track: Compare the overlay’s input with the system that actually advanced the music. Test a transition and check whether the chosen input updates at that point.
- The same title remains during a loop: If the same media item is repeating, a metadata-based Now Playing element may have no new item to display. The Playout.video guide specifically notes that repeating the same item does not change its display.
- The title differs from the audio: The overlay may be following another player, playlist, or schedule. Reconnect it to the actual playback source or use a title input that matches that source.
- The label is visible in a tool preview but not in the YouTube picture: Verify that the overlay is part of the composed video scene being sent to YouTube, rather than a separate local display.
