In OBS, create a separate holding scene with a still image or short animation, then switch to it when the loop needs attention. Keep the scene ready in the scene list and rehearse the switch on a private or unlisted stream. OBS documents looping and playlist controls, but not a universal detector that recognizes every playback failure and changes scenes automatically.
1. Prepare a child-friendly holding graphic
Design the image at your stream’s canvas dimensions so it fills the output without cropping. A simple message such as “We’ll be right back,” your channel name, and a calm visual is enough. Make text large and easy to read, and keep important details away from the edges. Avoid alarming error language or asking children to leave the stream or take action elsewhere. These are design recommendations, not YouTube requirements.
2. Create a separate holding scene in OBS
- In OBS, add a new scene for the holding screen and give it a clear name, such as “Holding screen.”
- Add the graphic as an Image source, or add a local holding animation using a suitable media source.
- Resize and position the source to cover the output canvas. Check the scene in the preview for cropping, text readability, and safe margins.
- Leave the scene visible in the scene list so an operator can select it quickly when needed.
A separate scene is easier to invoke than trying to cover a problem video with an image layered underneath it.
3. Set up the looping video scene
Choose a source based on whether you are looping one file or a playlist. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes these controls and dependencies: OBS Media Sources (page dated January 11, 2022).

OBS also documents source visibility behavior and options for when playback ends. An ended-file option is not a general detector for decoder faults, a frozen frame, or every other failure. Check the behavior of your chosen source and files rather than assuming an error will automatically show the holding scene.
4. Decide how the fallback will appear
Use a separate scene for a clear operator-controlled fallback
When the video freezes, shows an error, or needs attention, switch the live program to the holding scene. This is a monitored, manual fallback unless you have separately tested a specific automation. OBS’s documented playback-end controls do not establish automatic scene switching for every kind of failure.

Use a background image only for limited cases
You can place a persistent image beneath the video source, but it will only show through if the video source is hidden or no longer covering it. It will not cover a frozen or still-visible video frame. Use the separate holding scene when you need a dependable visual for an operator to select.
5. Rehearse before the public stream
- Start a private or unlisted rehearsal stream and check the OBS preview.
- Test the failure you expect could happen: for example, a missing file or playback reaching the end. Confirm what OBS actually displays.
- Practice switching the active program scene to the holding scene. Verify that the transition is visible in the stream, not only in the OBS preview.
- Check audio as well as video, and note who will monitor the stream and make the switch.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, check the preview before starting the public stream and keep monitoring audio and video quality. YouTube’s guidance says: “Before clicking Start Streaming, check the preview in the Live Control Room.” See YouTube live streaming tips.
If you use a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it works. YouTube recommends testing by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network cable and checking that the player moves to the backup. Follow the steps in YouTube’s live streaming tips.

6. Set the audience accurately for children’s content
In YouTube Live Control Room, designate whether the stream is Made for Kids based on the actual content. YouTube’s factors include subject matter, intended or actual audience, child actors, characters or toys that appeal to children, language, activities, children’s songs or stories, and other audience evidence. The holding card does not change the nature or intended audience of the stream.
The presence of children alone does not automatically settle the designation. For streams marked Made for Kids, YouTube restricts features including live chat and personalized advertising; that designation does not automatically place a video in the YouTube Kids app. Review YouTube’s guidance on determining if content is Made for Kids and features affected by Made for Kids content. 7. Troubleshoot common holding-screen and loop problems

Keep the stream within YouTube’s live-stream rules. YouTube says not to evade a live-stream restriction by streaming through another channel; see YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions.
