To repeat backup tracks in an OBS-powered YouTube radio stream, add them as a VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist. This repeats the playlist when it reaches the end. It does not, by itself, detect a failed primary audio source and switch to the backup; automatic failover needs a separate source-switching setup that you test.

Choose the right kind of backup

“Backup” can mean either alternate audio content or a redundant connection to YouTube. They solve different problems:

  • Backup audio playlist: Local files that provide alternate programme content. OBS can play a list of files and loop that list, but looping alone does not trigger when another audio source fails.
  • Backup ingestion: A second path for sending an encoder’s stream to YouTube. YouTube’s HLS setup provides a backup server URL for this purpose; it is not a playlist of backup songs. HLS also has higher latency than RTMP because it sends media in segments. YouTube’s HLS setup instructions specify HLS requirements; do not apply those requirements to a normal OBS RTMP playlist setup.

The steps below configure a local playlist in OBS. If you need it to take over automatically when the main programme feed stops, you will also need a separately configured and tested mechanism to switch sources.

Set up a repeating playlist in OBS

1. Prepare the tracks and install VLC

  1. Put the backup audio files in a local folder the streaming computer can access, and confirm that the files play.
  2. Install VLC on that computer. OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

2. Add the VLC Video Source

  1. In OBS, select the scene that will go to YouTube, then use the Sources panel’s add control to add a VLC Video Source. Give it a clear name, such as “Backup audio playlist.”
  2. Add the intended media files to the source’s playlist in the order you want them played.
  3. Enable Loop Playlist so the list starts again after its final item. Leave shuffle off if the order matters. OBS documents playlist playback, looping, and shuffle as separate controls.
  4. Confirm the source is active in the scene you plan to stream. Check that its audio meter moves during playback, then make a short test recording or a private or unlisted test stream and listen to the result.

3. Connect OBS to YouTube

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
  2. Get the stream URL and stream key for the selected stream. Enter them in OBS’s stream settings, following YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share or publish it. Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview before making the stream public.

4. Test both kinds of transition

Listen for the last playlist item to transition back to the first. If the playlist is meant to take over when the main audio source fails, test that event separately and confirm that the intended source-switching mechanism actually changes sources. A successful playlist loop is not evidence of automatic failure detection.

When to use a single-file loop instead

If you have just one fallback track, OBS’s regular Media Source has a Loop setting. For multiple files that should play as a sequence, use VLC Video Source and its Loop Playlist setting. Both are local playback approaches; the VLC playlist requires VLC to be installed and its architecture to match OBS.

What YouTube’s HLS backup URL does

YouTube’s HLS backup server URL is for a backup ingestion path, not fallback audio. YouTube’s HLS instructions call for TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. Use these settings only when configuring an HLS-capable encoder for HLS; they are not generic settings for an OBS RTMP playlist.

Common problems and fixes

  • The VLC Video Source is missing or will not load: Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Check the media file paths and try opening the files in VLC.
  • The playlist plays once and stops: Reopen the source properties and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled.
  • The files play in the wrong order: Arrange them in the playlist in the desired sequence and leave shuffle off.
  • The stream has no backup audio: Check that the VLC source is active in the scene being sent to YouTube, that playback is running, and that the source’s audio meter moves. Confirm by listening to a test recording or private or unlisted stream.
  • The backup playlist does not take over when the main feed fails: Looping only repeats the playlist. Configure a separate source-switching mechanism for failure-triggered takeover, then test the failure case; do not assume OBS’s loop control provides failover.
  • YouTube does not accept the stream connection: Verify that the stream URL and key in OBS match the selected YouTube stream. If a key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder settings.

Copyright and channel considerations

Only use tracks you have the rights or permission to stream on YouTube. Adding music to a loop or keeping a stream online does not grant those rights. Check YouTube’s current copyright guidance and the terms for any music you plan to use before going live. A technically successful stream also does not guarantee monetization or eligibility under YouTube’s channel policies; review the current rules for your channel and content.
