Windows 11 can be activated from an elevated Command Prompt with Microsoft’s built-in slmgr.vbs script. You still need a legitimate activation entitlement: a 25-character product key, a digital license already associated with the device, or—on company-managed computers—an organizational volume-licensing service such as KMS.
CMD does not create a license, bypass activation, or turn an unlicensed Windows installation into a permanently activated copy. Before running commands, check that the installed edition matches the license you intend to use.
Check your Windows 11 edition first
A product key must match the installed edition. For example, a Windows 11 Home license cannot activate Windows 11 Pro, and an Enterprise key is not valid for Home or Pro.
Check in Settings
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Review the installed edition and current activation status.
Check from CMD
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Get-CurrentEdition
The result identifies the edition of the running Windows installation. To check the Windows version and build, type winver into taskbar search and open the result.

Activate Windows 11 with a genuine product key
Use this method if you have a valid retail, OEM, or other applicable 25-character Windows 11 product key.
- Open the Start menu and search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Install the key with slmgr.vbs /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX, replacing the placeholder with your actual key.
- Request online activation with slmgr.vbs /ato.
Do not type the angle brackets sometimes used in Microsoft command syntax. The /ipk option installs a 5-by-5 product key and checks whether it applies to the installed operating system. If another valid key is already installed, the new key replaces it.
Windows must be connected to the internet, and the activation servers must be reachable. A successful command opens a Windows Script Host message confirming the result.
Use cscript for output inside the Command Prompt
slmgr.vbs is a Windows Script Host script. Running it directly may display results in dialog boxes. The cscript.exe version keeps the output in the console:
cscript.exe %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
cscript.exe %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /ato
Microsoft recommends restarting Windows or restarting the Software Protection service after installing a key to avoid licensing-service instability. Request activation after installing the key, and restart if Windows reports a licensing-service problem.

Verify activation from CMD
Use these commands after activation to confirm both the status and the licensing channel:

For a retail or MAK activation, /xpr normally reports permanent activation. A KMS client instead has a time-limited activation that must periodically renew. Therefore, a successful /ato alone does not necessarily prove that the computer has a permanent retail license.

Activate a Windows 11 digital license
A digital license does not require you to type a product key. Connect the PC to the internet and open Start > Settings > System > Activation. Windows should activate automatically when it recognizes the device’s entitlement.
If it does not, select Troubleshoot on the Activation page and follow the prompts. Microsoft’s current Windows 11 guidance also directs users to the Get Help app for automated diagnostics. You can request an activation attempt from an elevated Command Prompt with slmgr.vbs /ato.
This command only asks Windows to activate using an entitlement it can already find. It does not create or attach a digital license.
After replacing major hardware
A motherboard replacement can cause Windows to lose track of a digital license. If the license was linked to your Microsoft account:

- Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Choose I changed hardware on this device recently.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the license.
- Select This is the device I’m using right now, then select Activate.
This recovery path depends on using the same Microsoft account that was associated with the digital license.
KMS activation for company-managed computers
KMS is for organizational volume licensing, not free activation of a personal retail PC. It requires a volume-licensed Windows edition, an appropriate Generic Volume License Key (GVLK), access to the organization’s KMS host, and the organization’s permission to use that service.
For example, Microsoft lists this GVLK for Windows 11 Pro:
W269N-WFGWX-YVC9B-4J6C9-T83GX
That key does not activate Windows independently. It tells a volume-licensed client to use KMS. On an organization-managed Windows 11 Pro installation, an administrator can install it and request activation with:
slmgr.vbs /ipk W269N-WFGWX-YVC9B-4J6C9-T83GX
slmgr.vbs /ato
Use the GVLK that matches the installed volume edition. Windows 11 Home is not included in Microsoft’s KMS client-key list, so a Home installation should use its genuine Home key or an eligible digital license.
Specify the organization’s KMS host
If your administrator gave you a KMS server name, set it manually:

If the server uses a non-default port, include it after a colon:
slmgr.vbs /skms kms.example.com:1688
slmgr.vbs /ato
KMS normally uses TCP port 1688. Clients can also discover the host through the DNS _vlmcs._tcp service record. A missing DNS record, blocked port, unreachable server, or connection to the wrong network can prevent activation.
To remove a manually configured KMS host and restore automatic discovery, run slmgr.vbs /ckms.
KMS clients must contact the KMS host at least once every 180 days. Activated clients normally try to renew every seven days. If a company PC is off the corporate network for an extended period, connect it to the organization’s network or VPN and try slmgr.vbs /ato again.

Commands you should not use as activation fixes
Do not run /upk casually
slmgr.vbs /upk
This uninstalls the product key for the current Windows edition. After a restart, Windows enters an unlicensed state unless another key is installed. It is not a routine activation troubleshooting command.
/rearm does not activate Windows
slmgr.vbs /rearm
This resets licensing timers; it does not provide a license or permanently activate Windows.

/cpky does not activate Windows
slmgr.vbs /cpky
This removes the product key from the registry to reduce the risk of key theft. Do not use it as an activation command, particularly before you have identified the current activation method.
CMD activation misconceptions
- “There is a command that activates Windows 11 for free.” No. CMD can install a valid key or request activation, but it cannot manufacture a license.
- “The public Windows 11 Pro KMS key activates any PC.” No. A GVLK requires a qualifying volume installation and the organization’s KMS host.
- “/rearm permanently activates Windows.” No. It only resets activation timers.
- “/dlv always displays the unique OEM key stored in firmware.” No. Windows may show a partial default key rather than the unique OA3 firmware key.
- “Activation is under Update & Security in Windows 11.” That is an older Windows 10 path. In Windows 11, use Settings > System > Activation.
FAQ
Can CMD activate Windows 11 without a product key?
Only if the PC already has an eligible digital license or can reach an authorized organizational activation service. CMD cannot create a digital license or legally activate an unlicensed installation.
Which command activates Windows 11?
After installing a valid matching key with slmgr.vbs /ipk your-key, run slmgr.vbs /ato to request online activation.
Why does slmgr /ato fail?
Common causes include an edition mismatch, invalid or blocked key, no internet connection, firewall interference, unavailable activation servers, or—on volume installations—an unreachable KMS host.

Is the Windows 11 Pro KMS key a free license?
No. It is a Generic Volume License Key for qualifying organizational installations. It requires access to the organization’s KMS infrastructure and cannot independently activate a retail PC.
How do I check whether Windows 11 is permanently activated?
Run slmgr.vbs /dlv to inspect the licensing channel and slmgr.vbs /xpr to view expiration status. Retail and MAK activations normally show permanent activation; KMS activation must renew periodically.
What should I do after replacing my motherboard?
Open Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot, choose I changed hardware on this device recently, sign in to the Microsoft account linked to the license, select the current device, and activate it.

The safe CMD workflow is simple: confirm the Windows 11 edition, open an elevated Command Prompt, install a genuine matching key with slmgr.vbs /ipk, request activation with slmgr.vbs /ato, and verify the result with /dlv and /xpr. If you have a digital license, use the Activation troubleshooter rather than looking for a supposed “free activation” command. KMS commands are appropriate only for computers covered by an organization’s volume license.
