You can use Command Prompt to attempt Windows 10 activation, but a command cannot create a license or make an unauthorized key valid. First check that you have a digital license for this device or a product key that matches your installed Windows edition; then follow Microsoft’s documented activation workflow.
Microsoft supports online activation and an offline process using an Installation ID and Confirmation ID. For the exact CMD commands and steps for either route, use Microsoft’s instructions rather than relying on unverified command examples.
Before you start
- Confirm that you have a valid digital license for this device or a product key for the Windows edition installed.
- Check the edition and activation status under Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- To check the Windows version and build, press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter.
- For standard online activation, connect the PC to the internet. Microsoft also documents an offline process using Installation and Confirmation IDs.
Microsoft says activation helps verify that Windows is genuine and has not been used on more devices than the Microsoft Software License Terms allow. A product key must match the installed edition; for example, an Enterprise key will not activate Windows Home or Pro.
Check whether Windows is already activated
- Open Settings.
- Go to Update & Security > Activation.
- Review the activation message and confirm which Windows edition is installed.
If the device has an applicable digital license, you may not need to enter a product key. If you do use a key, Microsoft says it must be valid for the installed edition and assigned to the device.

Activate Windows online using CMD
Use Microsoft’s current activation instructions for the exact SLMGR command sequence. The research available for this guide confirms that Microsoft documents an SLMGR command-prompt route, but does not provide its complete online command sequence; this article therefore does not reconstruct it.
- Confirm the installed edition and that your digital license or product key applies to it.
- Open Microsoft’s Windows activation error guidance and follow the instructions for your license and activation situation.
- If using CMD, follow Microsoft’s documented SLMGR workflow exactly.
- Return to Settings > Update & Security > Activation to check the result.

Troubleshoot activation problems
- Record the exact activation error code and message.
- Recheck the installed edition and make sure the key matches it. Microsoft notes that a key for another edition will not activate Windows.
- If you used a key on multiple devices, check that it is valid for this device; Microsoft says Windows keys are assigned for a single device.
- If the device has a digital license, recently changed hardware, or still will not activate, use the Activation troubleshooter and Microsoft’s reactivation guidance.
- Check the error code again after troubleshooting, since Microsoft notes that the code or message can change. Follow the remedy for the current code or contact Microsoft Support if needed.
For Windows 10 version 1607 or later, Microsoft describes an Activation troubleshooter for devices that remain unactivated. The support-page troubleshooter path requires signing in as an administrator.
Microsoft’s activation guidance also discusses network or firewall issues and phone activation in some cases. Check Microsoft’s current instructions for eligibility; Windows 10 Pro EDU and Pro for Workstations are excluded from the phone-activation route described there and must activate over the internet.

FAQ
Can CMD activate Windows without a valid license?
No. CMD can run an activation workflow, but it cannot create a license or legitimize an unauthorized key. You need an applicable digital license or a valid product key for the installed edition.
Why does my Windows product key not work?
The key may not match the installed edition, may not be valid for this device, or may have another activation issue. Check the edition and follow Microsoft’s guidance for the exact error code.
