Windows 10 can be activated from an elevated Command Prompt with the built-in slmgr.vbs tool. The normal sequence is to install a genuine product key with /ipk, attempt online activation with /ato, and then verify the result with /xpr or /dlv.
These commands do not generate a license, bypass activation, or turn a volume-license key into a retail license. You need either a valid 25-character product key or a digital license already associated with the computer.
Before activating Windows 10 from CMD
Have one of these legitimate activation methods available:
- A valid 25-character Windows product key, formatted like
XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX - A digital license associated with the computer, sometimes linked to your Microsoft account
The product key must match the installed edition. For example, a Windows 10 Home key will not activate Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, or Education.

Also note that Windows 10 version 22H2 was the final general release. Support for standard Windows 10 Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions ended on October 14, 2025. LTSC editions have separate support schedules.
1. Check your Windows 10 edition
First confirm which edition is installed:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
winver. - Press Enter.
The About Windows dialog shows the edition, version, and build. You can also open it by selecting Start, typing winver, and selecting the result.
For a more detailed edition check, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation. The edition appears near the top of the page, along with the current activation status.
2. Open Command Prompt as an administrator
Installing or replacing a product key requires an elevated Command Prompt.

- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
The window title should say Administrator: Command Prompt. If it does not, close it and repeat the process with the administrator option.
3. Check the current activation status
Before changing anything, inspect the installed license:
slmgr.vbs /dlvThis opens a Windows Script Host dialog containing detailed licensing information, including the license status, activation ID, and license channel.

/xpr is particularly useful on computers using volume activation. Retail and MAK activations are normally perpetual, while KMS clients periodically renew their activation.

Replace the example key below with your own valid key:
slmgr.vbs /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXXThe /ipk switch installs the key and checks whether it is valid for the installed Windows edition. If another key is already installed, a valid replacement key replaces it.
A successful installation does not always mean that Windows is activated. It installs the license key; the next command requests activation from the appropriate activation service.
5. Attempt online activation
Run:
slmgr.vbs /atoThe /ato switch tells Windows to attempt online activation. On a retail installation, Windows contacts Microsoft’s activation service. On a properly configured volume-license installation, it attempts activation through the organization’s KMS or Active Directory-based activation infrastructure.

If activation succeeds, Windows Script Host displays a confirmation message. If it fails, the dialog normally includes an error code that can identify the problem.
6. Verify the result
Check the activation state again:
slmgr.vbs /xprFor more information, use:

- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Activation.
Typical successful messages include Windows is activated with a digital license or Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.

slmgr.vbs /xprRun each command separately and read the result before continuing. Do not post your real product key in screenshots, forums, or support requests.
What if the PC has a digital license?
A product key may not be necessary if the computer already has a digital license. This commonly happens after reinstalling the same Windows edition on the same device.
- Install the same edition that was previously licensed.
- When Windows Setup asks for a key, select I don’t have a product key.
- Connect the computer to the internet after installation.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the digital license, if applicable.
Windows should reactivate automatically when the installed edition matches the device’s digital license. The slmgr.vbs commands can inspect the state, but they cannot create or transfer a digital license.
KMS commands: only for organizational computers
KMS commands are appropriate only when an organization has a legitimate volume-licensing deployment. They are not a retail activation method.

slmgr.vbs /atoKMS normally uses TCP port 1688. If a manually configured KMS host should be removed and DNS autodiscovery restored, run:
slmgr.vbs /ckmsKMS clients normally need to renew activation periodically, using a 180-day activation interval. On a company-managed computer, ask IT for the correct KMS host rather than copying a server address from an online guide.
Why public KMS keys do not activate personal Windows installations
Microsoft publishes Generic Volume License Keys, or GVLKs, for organizations. A GVLK is a client setup key, not a standalone retail license. It requires a valid organization’s KMS host or Active Directory-based activation service.

Scripts that connect a computer to an unauthorized KMS server, modify licensing files, or disable licensing services are not valid activation procedures and can create security and licensing problems.

Optional phone activation
If online activation is unavailable and your edition supports it, type SLUI 04 in the taskbar search box and follow the displayed instructions. Phone activation is not available for Windows 10 Pro for Workstations or Windows 10 Pro EDU; those editions must activate over the internet.
Commands not to use as activation fixes
slmgr.vbs /rearm
/rearm resets licensing timers. It does not supply a product key or permanently activate Windows.
slmgr.vbs /upk
/upk uninstalls the current product key. After a restart, Windows can become unlicensed until another valid key is installed. Do not run it casually as a general troubleshooting step.
