To access an old iTunes library, first identify where the music exists: as iTunes Store purchases, as music files on a computer or backup, or in Apple’s cloud library. The recovery route depends on that distinction. Before changing Sync Library settings or rebuilding anything, preserve any library and music files you can still find.
First, identify what kind of music is missing
- iTunes Store purchases: These may be available to download again when you sign in with the Apple Account used to buy them and the items remain available in your country or region.
- Local music files: Tracks imported from CDs or other sources may still be on the original computer or a separate backup. Adding those files to a music app can restore access to the audio, but it does not necessarily restore playlists, ratings, or other library organization.
- Cloud library content: Sync Library can make a library available on signed-in devices with an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription. It is a syncing service, not a substitute for a separate backup.
Protect the files you still have
Before changing library settings, moving files, or attempting a recovery, copy any existing music files and library files to a separate location, such as an external drive. Apple advises backing up a music collection before changing Sync Library or iTunes Match settings. A backup can protect only the files actually copied to it; it cannot recover music that was never saved there. See Apple’s guidance for backing up and restoring an iTunes library.
Redownload eligible iTunes Store purchases on Windows
For music bought from the iTunes Store, use the Apple Account that made the purchase. On a Windows PC, authorize the computer for that account, then look in the Purchased section of Apple Music or iTunes, depending on the app you use. Apple’s instructions for redownloading music cover finding and downloading previous purchases.
- Sign in to the Apple Account used to buy the music.
- Authorize the Windows computer for that account.
- Open Purchased in Apple Music or iTunes and look for the missing tracks.
- If a track is absent, check that you are using the correct account, look for hidden purchases, and confirm that the item is not already in your library.
A purchase record does not guarantee that a track can still be downloaded. Apple notes that some purchases may be unavailable if the item has been removed from the Store or is unavailable in a particular country or region.

Re-add music files that are still on your computer
If the original audio files remain on a Windows PC, Apple documents adding them to iTunes. In iTunes, choose File > Add File to Library or File > Add Folder to Library, then select the files or folder. Apple lists MusiciTunesiTunes Media as the default location for items added to iTunes; the actual location can differ if the library was configured differently. See Apple’s instructions for importing media from a computer to iTunes.
Adding files restores access to the audio, not necessarily the old library database. If that database or its backups are missing, these import steps do not promise to bring back playlists, ratings, play counts, or other metadata. Recovery of that organization depends on the files and backups available and the library version involved.

Use Sync Library for access across devices
Sync Library makes music available across devices signed in with the same Apple Account, provided you have an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription and enable the feature. Apple says, “Apple Music isn’t a backup service.” Keep a separate copy of important files even when your collection appears on multiple devices. Apple explains how to turn on Sync Library.
iTunes Match is designed to upload a Mac or PC music library, including music imported from sources such as CDs. Sync Library and iTunes Match availability and menus can vary by platform and software version; follow the instructions for the device you are setting up.

Know the cloud-library limits
Apple’s Mac user guide states that a cloud music library can contain up to 100,000 songs, excluding music and music videos purchased from the iTunes Store, and that files must be no larger than 200 MB. The same guide says matched songs are provided as DRM-free AAC at 256 kbps (“iTunes Plus” quality), while other songs remain at their original quality. These are Apple service limits and file-quality descriptions, not a promise that every track will match or be available in every region. See Apple’s Mac user guide for accessing a music library across devices.
Transfer Store purchases from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod
If the music remains on a connected Apple device and consists of iTunes Store purchases, Apple documents transferring purchases to an authorized Windows PC. Use Apple’s instructions for transferring iTunes Store purchases from a device to a computer. This route applies to Store purchases; it is not a universal way to extract every locally synced track from a device.

Choose the recovery route that fits
| Music you are trying to recover | What to use | What you need | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| iTunes Store purchases | Redownload from Purchased | The purchasing Apple Account and an authorized Windows PC | Some items may no longer be available in the Store or in your region. |
| Files stored on a computer or backup | Add the files to iTunes on Windows | Access to the audio files | Importing files does not by itself restore a missing database, playlists, ratings, or metadata. |
| A library you want to access across devices | Enable Sync Library | Apple Music or iTunes Match, with the same Apple Account on each device | Cloud syncing is not a separate backup. |
| iTunes Store purchases still on an Apple device | Transfer purchases to an authorized PC | A connected device and authorized Windows PC | Apple’s documented method covers Store purchases, not all synced audio. |
If the library is still missing
- Check for another Apple Account that may have been used to make purchases.
- Look for hidden purchases and verify whether the track is already in the library.
- Search the original computer and any backups for music files or library files before importing or changing settings.
- Check the device-specific Apple instructions for your current app and operating system; menus differ across Mac, Windows, and older iTunes versions.
Apple’s published steps do not establish one universal procedure for rebuilding a lost iTunes database, restoring every non-purchased track from an iPod, or recovering playlists. Those outcomes depend on the platform, library version, and whether a usable backup or original library file remains.
