You can control a mini PC from an Android tablet or iPad by setting up remote-access software on the mini PC, then connecting with a compatible tablet app. Chrome Remote Desktop supports Windows, Mac, and Linux hosts and both Android and iPad clients. If the mini PC runs Windows Pro, Microsoft Remote Desktop is another option. The computer must be powered on and reachable; it cannot be accessed while unavailable.
Choose a remote-access method
Start with the mini PC’s operating system and edition, then choose the client that fits your tablet and how much server administration you want to do.

These are documented capabilities, not a measured performance or security ranking. If you want a straightforward option across different mini PC operating systems, Chrome Remote Desktop is broadly applicable. Choose Microsoft’s route when the host is Windows Pro and you prefer its built-in hosting. Consider RustDesk if its server options suit you and you are comfortable configuring the client or maintaining a server.
Set up access from your tablet
- Check the mini PC’s operating system and edition. For Microsoft Remote Desktop hosting, confirm it runs Windows Pro. If it runs Windows Home, Mac, or Linux, use a compatible alternative such as Chrome Remote Desktop. See Microsoft’s requirements and Google’s supported host setup.
- Configure the host on the mini PC. Install and configure the chosen host software, grant the requested permissions, and set its authentication method. For Microsoft Remote Desktop, open Settings, enable Remote Desktop, and record the PC name. For Chrome Remote Desktop, begin at remotedesktop.google.com/access, then follow Google’s setup prompts.
- Keep the mini PC available. It needs to be powered on and reachable over the network. Chrome Remote Desktop requires internet access; Google says a dimmed computer in the list is offline or unavailable. Work or school networks and managed accounts may restrict remote access.
- Connect using the tablet. Open the compatible app or client, select the mini PC—or add its PC name for Microsoft Remote Desktop—and enter the required PIN or credentials. In Chrome Remote Desktop on Android or iPad, the default control is a virtual trackpad. Google’s Android instructions also describe touch modes for Windows hosts. For longer typing sessions, a Bluetooth keyboard with a trackpad may be more convenient; check compatibility with your tablet.
Protect the connection and the host
Google says Chrome Remote Desktop sessions are fully encrypted and requires a PIN when connecting to a configured host. Encryption protects the session in transit, but remote control still gives access to the mini PC’s desktop and its open material. Use a PIN that is not easy to guess and do not share access details casually.

For temporary support sharing, Google says the access code works once and the host user must reconfirm continued sharing every 30 minutes. A support user receives access to the host’s apps, files, email, documents, and history during the shared session. Share only with someone you trust, and stop sharing when the help session is over. RustDesk provides controls for incoming permissions and password options. If you self-host its server, you take on responsibility for setting it up and maintaining it. That may offer more control over the server infrastructure, but does not by itself establish that the whole setup is safer. RustDesk documentation.

Organizations can configure Chrome Remote Desktop’s enterprise policy to disable firewall traversal, limiting connections to users on the local-area network or VPN. This is an administrator setting, not the default consumer setup; see Google’s enterprise documentation.

Fix connection problems
- The mini PC is missing or appears dimmed: Check that it is powered on, connected to the network, and available in the host software. Google identifies a dimmed computer as offline or unavailable.
- The app cannot connect on a work or school network: Network policy, firewall rules, or managed-account restrictions may block remote access. Ask the network administrator if you do not control those settings.
- Chrome Remote Desktop is blocked: Google lists outbound UDP, inbound UDP responses, TCP 443, and TCP/UDP 3478 among traffic that may need to be allowed. Do not change managed firewall rules yourself; request help from the administrator. Details are in Google’s connection instructions.
- Microsoft Remote Desktop does not accept the mini PC as a host: Check the Windows edition. Microsoft’s built-in host requirement is Windows Pro; Windows Home does not qualify for this route.
