You can access voicemail online only if your carrier or voice service offers a web option for your account. If it doesn’t, you may still be able to play messages in your phone’s Visual Voicemail app or call your mailbox from another phone. The available method depends on your provider, service, plan, device, and region.

Choose the access method that fits your service

First identify whether you’re checking mobile voicemail or a home or office voice mailbox. Then check your provider’s official instructions: online access, app support, eligibility, and account permissions vary by service.

Method Works when What to expect
Provider website Your provider offers browser access and your account is eligible. Useful on a computer, but available actions and account restrictions vary.
Visual Voicemail in the phone app Your device, carrier, region, and plan support it. Messages appear in a list with playback and other controls; features vary.
Carrier voicemail app Your provider offers and supports an app for your service. It may take over voicemail handling from the phone’s built-in Visual Voicemail.
Call the mailbox from another phone You know the provider’s remote-access procedure and voicemail password. A reliable fallback, but you’ll navigate spoken prompts and need the correct greeting-bypass instructions.

How to listen to voicemail in your phone’s app

On iPhone

When Visual Voicemail is available, open the Phone app and select a voicemail message to play it. Apple’s instructions also cover sharing and deleting messages; the layout and steps can differ by iOS version. See Apple’s iPhone voicemail instructions.

If you don’t see Visual Voicemail, it may not be supported for your carrier or account. Apple documents a way to call your own mobile number from another phone, bypass the greeting using the key your carrier specifies, and enter your voicemail password. The bypass key and prompts are carrier-dependent, so confirm them with your provider.

On Android

In the Phone app, look for the Visual voicemail setting or voicemail tab. Google notes that Visual Voicemail is available only with certain carriers and in certain countries or regions, and your plan may need to include it. Follow Google’s Phone app Visual Voicemail guidance for the supported setup on your device.

If you use your carrier’s voicemail app, Google says Visual Voicemail in the Phone app turns off to avoid a potential conflict. Use the app your provider supports rather than assuming both voicemail interfaces will work at once.

How to check voicemail in a browser

Browser access is a provider-specific feature, not a universal mobile-carrier option. Use the website or client your provider documents, sign in with the eligible account, and check whether the service supports the actions you need—such as playing, reading, deleting, or sharing messages.

Google Fi

Google Fi documents web access for calls and voicemail. Its web feature is unavailable to iPhone and iPad users, and the web interface does not let users delete multiple calls or voicemails at once. Check Google Fi’s web calling and voicemail instructions for account and setup details.

How to check voicemail from another phone

  1. Call your own mobile number from the other phone.
  2. When your voicemail greeting begins, press the key your carrier specifies to bypass it. Apple notes that this may be * or #, depending on the carrier.
  3. Enter your voicemail password and follow the mailbox prompts.

These are general steps, not a universal access code: the bypass key, prompt sequence, and password rules vary. Confirm the remote-access procedure with your carrier before relying on it.

  1. Confirm service and plan eligibility. Visual Voicemail may require carrier, regional, device, or plan support. For example, AT&T says a plan that includes Visual Voicemail is required; consult its Visual Voicemail requirements.
  2. Use the supported app or website. A carrier’s app may disable Visual Voicemail in the Phone app, and a browser service may be limited to particular accounts or devices.
  3. Check account permissions and identity verification. A linked line may need verification, or an account manager may need permission from the primary user.
  4. Use remote dial-in or contact the provider. If the app or web option is unavailable, ask your provider for the mailbox access steps for your exact service and line. AT&T’s voicemail access instructions illustrate that methods can differ by phone type.
