To access onion sites on Android, install the official Tor Browser, connect to Tor, then enter the exact .onion address you want to visit. Tor provides a way to reach onion services; it does not guarantee that a site is trustworthy or that your identity cannot be exposed.
Install Tor Browser from an official source
Tor Browser is the recommended Android app for accessing onion services. Tor Project lists Android 5.0 or newer as the requirement and provides the app through Google Play, the Guardian Project’s official F-Droid repository, its own download site, and GetTor. If you are unsure which app version fits your device, Tor Project advises using an app store. See Tor Project’s Android installation guidance.
Tor Project describes its download site as the safest and simplest route: Downloading Tor Browser. If that site is blocked, use an official mirror or GetTor listed by Tor Project. Tor Browser is free and open source, so treat an app charging for it or an unofficial app claiming to be the official browser with caution. Tor Project explains how to recognize fake or paid versions.
If you install an APK instead of using an app store, obtain it from an official Tor Project route and follow the project’s signature-verification instructions. A verified digital signature helps establish that the package came from its developers and was not altered. Details: Verifying Tor Browser’s signature.

Connect and open an onion service
- Open Tor Browser on your Android device and connect to Tor.
- Enter the exact onion address for the service you intend to visit. Current onion addresses consist of 56 letters and numbers followed by
.onion. - Check the address carefully if the page does not load. A small typo can prevent the connection.
Onion services are reached through Tor; they are not ordinary websites you can reliably find by typing a general search phrase into a browser. Tor Project’s guide explains onion services in Tor Browser.
Choose a security level that fits your needs
In Tor Browser for Android, choose among Standard, Safer, and Safest in the browser’s security settings. Higher levels disable or restrict some web features. That can reduce exposure to certain risks, but it can also cause pages or interactive features to stop working. Choose based on the privacy protection you want and the functionality you need; Tor Project describes the trade-offs in its security-level guide.

Use Tor Browser carefully and keep it updated
Do not route a different Android browser through Tor as a substitute for Tor Browser. Tor Project warns that other browsers can leak identifying information or otherwise undermine privacy protections. Tor Browser is configured to reduce these risks, but your actions still matter: avoid sharing identifying details if you do not want them associated with your activity, and do not assume that Tor makes an unknown site safe. Know what Android Tor Browser does not include
Tor Browser for Android does not currently provide every feature available in the desktop browser. Tor Project lists circuit display, New Identity, client authorization for onion services, and Onion-Location support among the features unavailable on Android. Check the project’s known-issues page for the current list.

The legality of using Tor and accessing particular content depends on the rules where you live and what you do online. Because no jurisdiction is specified here, do not assume the same rules apply everywhere; check the laws relevant to your location. Regardless of legality, an onion address is not proof that a site is safe, and Tor is a connection method rather than a guarantee of anonymity.
