Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a free, visual starting point, use USGS EarthExplorer. Search for your location, set a date range around the day you care about, choose an imagery dataset, and inspect the scene dates, footprints, cloud information where available, and browse images. A date range matters: the archive may have no scene acquired on the exact day you request.
What you need to decide first
Before searching, identify the location and what you need the image to show. Satellite archives do not guarantee an acquisition for every place on every day, and a scene that exists may be obscured by clouds or unsuitable for your task.
- Location: Use an address or place name for a quick search, coordinates for a precise point, or a polygon when you need to cover an area.
- Date: Treat the requested date as the center of a search window rather than assuming imagery exists for that day.
- Purpose: Decide whether you only need a view to inspect or a data product for measurement and analysis.
- Workflow: Choose a graphical portal for manual searches, or an API or cloud platform if you need to automate or process many scenes.
There is no universally best satellite resolution for every task. The appropriate dataset depends on the area, time period, and intended use.
Find imagery in USGS EarthExplorer
EarthExplorer is a practical place to begin because it combines location and date search with dataset selection, browse images, metadata, and downloads. USGS says Landsat products in its EROS archive have been available at no cost since 2008. The broader EROS archive also includes historical aerial imagery and other geospatial datasets.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Set the area of interest. Open EarthExplorer and identify the location with its map tools or place/address search. Use a point for a single site or draw a polygon for a broader area.
- Enter a date range. Set a window that includes the target date and, if possible, nearby days or weeks. Satellite revisit schedules, archive coverage, and conditions on the ground can leave the exact date without a usable scene.
- Select a dataset. Start with Landsat Collection 2 Level-2 if its coverage and level of detail fit your needs. EarthExplorer also provides other datasets, including historical aerial imagery; dataset availability and capabilities differ.
- Run the search and inspect results. Check each scene’s acquisition date and footprint to confirm it covers your location. Review cloud information if the selected dataset supports it, then open the browse image to assess whether the area is visible.
- Download and check metadata. Choose the product suited to your purpose, download it, and read its metadata. A browse image is a convenient preview; it is not necessarily the right file for measurement or analysis.
The EarthExplorer interface includes area and date filters, month selection, and a cloud-cover range. Its interface has indicated a 100-record result limit, and cloud filtering applies only to datasets that support it. These controls and limits can change, so rely on the current interface when searching.
Check whether Landsat covers your date
USGS lists the following availability periods for Landsat Collection 2 Level-2 surface reflectance products. These are archive windows by sensor, not a guarantee of an image for a particular location or day.

| Sensor | Listed Level-2 availability |
|---|---|
| Landsat 9 | October 2021 to present |
| Landsat 8 | April 2013 to present |
| Landsat 7 | July 1999 to April 2022 |
| Landsat 5 | March 1984 to May 2012 |
| Landsat 4 | August 1982 to December 1993 |
These periods reflect the USGS product page and should be checked there for updates. If your target date falls outside a sensor’s listed period, choose another archive or dataset. Even within a period, confirm that a scene actually intersects your area and is usable.
If the search does not find a usable scene
- Widen the date range. Search days or weeks around the requested date, depending on how exact the timing needs to be.
- Check another dataset or sensor. Different collections have different coverage periods and characteristics.
- Reconsider cloud conditions and visibility. Cloud filters may not be available for every dataset, and a browse image helps you judge whether the location is obscured.
- Try a visualization or analysis catalog. Google Earth Engine presents a historical imagery and geospatial dataset catalog, with Python and JavaScript APIs and a public archive described as containing more than thirty years of imagery. Its product page says the service is available for commercial use and remains free for academic and research use; confirm current terms before relying on those conditions.
- For repeated or bulk searches, use an automated route. USGS documents its M2M RESTful JSON API and cloud access routes for programmatic use. EarthExplorer remains a straightforward visual option for many one-off searches.
Choose the right file for the job
Use the browse image to quickly assess whether a scene covers the area and whether clouds or other conditions obstruct it. If you intend to calculate, compare, or otherwise analyze imagery, download the appropriate data product and consult its metadata rather than treating the preview as analysis-ready data. Confirm the acquisition timestamp in the metadata when the date itself is important.
