Use PhantomJS’s page.open() and page.render() when the URL serves an HTML page that you want to print as a PDF. If the URL serves an actual PDF file, download it with an HTTP client and validate the response instead of trying to render it through browser automation. Watir and GhostDriver address different needs: Watir can configure a browser to save PDF downloads, while GhostDriver exposes PhantomJS through the Remote WebDriver protocol. PhantomJS development is suspended, so treat this stack as legacy.

Choose the right approach: render HTML or retrieve a PDF

First determine what the URL returns. A webpage that displays a document using HTML needs a browser renderer if its JavaScript or layout must be processed. A URL that returns a PDF already contains the file; retrieve it as a file rather than asking PhantomJS to render it.

  • HTML-to-PDF: Use PhantomJS when you need a local, scriptable browser to load and render a webpage.
  • Direct PDF download: Use an HTTP client when the server response itself is a PDF. Check the response status, content type, and downloaded bytes.
  • Browser download behavior: Use Watir with a configured browser profile if the requirement is specifically to test a browser’s download behavior. Watir automates the browser, not operating-system file dialogs.
  • Remote WebDriver: Use PhantomJS’s embedded GhostDriver when a Selenium-compatible client must control PhantomJS over WebDriver.

These methods are not interchangeable: printing HTML, fetching a PDF response, testing a browser download, and controlling a browser remotely are distinct tasks.

Render an HTML webpage to PDF with PhantomJS

PhantomJS provides a scriptable headless browser. Its page.open(url, callback) method loads the URL and passes a status to the callback. On a successful load, page.render(filename) saves the page; the filename extension determines the output format, and PDF is supported.

Runnable PhantomJS script

var page = require('webpage').create();

page.open('https://example.com/document', function (status) {
  if (status !== 'success') {
    console.log('Unable to load PDF webpage: ' + status);
    phantom.exit(1);
    return;
  }

  page.render('/tmp/document.pdf');
  phantom.exit();
});

Save the script as, for example, render.js, then run it with the PhantomJS executable:

phantomjs render.js

Replace the example URL with the HTML page to capture and choose an output path that exists and is writable on the machine running PhantomJS. The script checks the load status before rendering and exits with a nonzero status if the page fails to load.

Important limits of this minimal pattern

The callback’s success status establishes that PhantomJS reports the page load as successful; it does not establish that every asynchronous widget, delayed image, or application request has finished. If the page requires additional rendering time or interaction, the minimal example may capture it too early. This pattern also does not turn a PDF response into a PDF webpage: for a direct PDF URL, use the retrieval approach below.

Download a URL that returns a PDF directly

When the URL itself serves a PDF, use an HTTP library rather than browser UI automation. Inspect the HTTP response status and Content-Type, and verify the saved file bytes before treating the result as a valid PDF. Servers may return an error page or an HTML login page instead of a document, even when the requested URL looks like a PDF link.

The available guidance establishes the approach, not a particular HTTP client implementation or response-validation recipe. Choose a client appropriate to your language and environment; do not assume that a browser-rendering call is a reliable file downloader.

Use Watir when you need to test a browser download

Watir automates a browser rather than the operating system. Consequently, a browser’s native file dialog is not something Watir can operate as though it were a webpage. Watir’s guide recommends considering an HTTP library first; if browser downloading is unavoidable, configure the browser profile so PDFs are saved directly to a chosen directory.

Firefox profile configuration

The Watir guide’s Firefox example adds application/pdf to the browser’s automatic-save MIME types:

browser.helperApps.neverAsk.saveToDisk = 'text/csv,application/pdf'

This is a browser preference, not a Watir command that clicks through a file dialog. Apply it while configuring the Firefox profile used to start the browser, and configure that profile with the intended download directory. The setting shown also includes text/csv, as in the guide’s example; retain only MIME types your test needs.

Decide whether Watir is necessary

  • If the test only needs the PDF bytes, use an HTTP library and validate the response.
  • If the test must verify that a browser initiates and completes a download, configure its profile to save PDFs directly and check the resulting file outside the browser UI interaction.
  • If the test requires interaction with a native dialog, Watir alone is not the appropriate mechanism because it controls the browser rather than the operating system.

Connect Selenium or another WebDriver client through GhostDriver

GhostDriver implements the Remote WebDriver Wire protocol with PhantomJS as its backend. PhantomJS’s documented --webdriver option starts remote WebDriver mode with GhostDriver embedded. The documented default endpoint is 127.0.0.1:8910.

  1. Start PhantomJS in WebDriver mode:
    phantomjs --webdriver=8910
  2. Configure the Selenium or other WebDriver-compatible client to connect to http://127.0.0.1:8910.
  3. Use the client to navigate to the HTML page you need to control. If your goal is to produce a PDF, use the PhantomJS page-rendering pattern where appropriate; a WebDriver connection alone does not change a direct PDF response into an HTML page.

Older bindings may support supplying a separate GhostDriver path through driver capabilities. The documented setup embeds GhostDriver in PhantomJS, so start with the embedded mode unless a legacy binding requires another configuration.

Account for PhantomJS’s maintenance status

The PhantomJS project’s official homepage states: “Important: PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice.” The official command-line documentation identifies version 2.1.1; that is a release reference, not evidence of current maintenance or compatibility with present-day sites. Treat the PhantomJS, Watir, and GhostDriver combination as legacy: pin the versions you use and isolate it from current production browser automation.

A hosted renderer may be an option if maintaining a local legacy browser is impractical. PhantomJSCloud documents JavaScript execution followed by PDF output. Verify its current service terms, limits, and compatibility before adopting it; no particular limits or compatibility guarantees are established here.

Choose based on the actual requirement

Requirement Approach Key consideration
Print an HTML page to PDF locally PhantomJS page.open() followed by page.render() Legacy stack; success status does not prove every delayed page element has loaded.
Fetch a URL whose response is already a PDF HTTP client Validate status, content type, and bytes; browser rendering is unnecessary.
Test browser PDF downloading Watir with a browser profile configured for automatic PDF saving Watir does not control native file dialogs.
Control PhantomJS using Selenium/WebDriver PhantomJS remote mode with embedded GhostDriver Documented endpoint: 127.0.0.1:8910.
Render without maintaining a local PhantomJS installation Consider a hosted renderer such as PhantomJSCloud Check current terms, limits, and compatibility before use.

Troubleshooting

PhantomJS reports a failed page load

The page.open() callback did not report success. Check that the URL is reachable from the machine running PhantomJS and that it is the intended HTML page. The sample exits without rendering on failure, avoiding a misleading output file.

The output file is missing or cannot be written

Check that the destination directory exists and that the PhantomJS process has permission to write there. Use an absolute path appropriate to the host operating system; /tmp/document.pdf is an example path, not a portable destination for every system.

The PDF is incomplete or missing delayed content

The basic script renders after the page-open callback. A successful callback does not guarantee that application-specific asynchronous work has completed. Identify what the page must finish loading before capture and adapt the script to that requirement; the simple pattern does not define a universal wait condition.

A direct PDF URL does not produce the expected output

Do not treat a PDF file response as an HTML page to render. Fetch it with an HTTP client, inspect the status and content type, and validate the bytes. Confirm that the server did not return an HTML sign-in page or an error response in place of the document.

Watir stalls at a download prompt

Configure the browser profile to save application/pdf to the chosen directory instead of prompting. If the task is only to obtain the file, bypass browser downloading and use an HTTP library.

The WebDriver client cannot connect

Confirm that PhantomJS was started with phantomjs --webdriver=8910 and point the client to http://127.0.0.1:8910. If using an older binding that expects a separate GhostDriver path, check that binding’s capability setup; the documented PhantomJS setup embeds GhostDriver.

Or skip the browser setup

If the task is a website screenshot rather than maintaining this legacy local renderer, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For HTML-to-PDF, request PDF output using the service’s documented parameters:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/document -o document.pdf

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the parameters and output options. It accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Frequently Asked Questions

Does PhantomJS development still continue?

No. The PhantomJS project homepage says development is suspended until further notice.

Can PhantomJS turn a PDF file URL into a PDF webpage?

No. If the URL returns a PDF file directly, retrieve and validate the response with an HTTP client; use PhantomJS rendering for HTML content.

Is GhostDriver a separate server in the documented PhantomJS setup?

No. PhantomJS’s documented remote WebDriver mode embeds GhostDriver, though older bindings may support a separate GhostDriver path.
