To access cloud storage from Finder or File Explorer, install your provider’s desktop app and choose its streaming or on-demand option when available. Your cloud files then appear in the file manager, but many remain online until you open them. Choose mirroring or mark selected files for offline use when you need local copies. The right steps depend on your cloud provider, operating system, and account.

What “like a local drive” means

A cloud drive can appear in Finder or File Explorer without storing every file on your computer. In a streaming or on-demand setup, the file manager displays cloud items and downloads a file when you open it. A mirrored setup keeps a local copy of the selected cloud library, using disk space but allowing access without an internet connection.

For most people, the provider’s own desktop client is the simplest place to start. It is designed for that service and may handle sign-in, synchronization, and offline choices for you. If you need to mount different cloud services through one configurable tool—or your platform lacks a suitable native client—rclone is an alternative, though it takes more setup.

Choose a method for your provider and computer

Method Good fit Check before setup
Google Drive for desktop Google Drive users on supported Windows or macOS systems Choose streaming or mirroring. On macOS 12.1 and later, streaming uses Apple File Provider, which changes where Drive appears in Finder and how moving items works.
OneDrive desktop app Personal or work OneDrive users who want cloud items in their desktop workflow Check Microsoft’s current operating-system requirements. Files On-Demand on Mac requires APFS; mark only the items you need offline for local retention.
Dropbox desktop app Dropbox users on supported Windows, macOS, or Linux systems Linux distribution and file-system support are specific, and Dropbox says its Linux desktop app is changing. Verify current requirements for your setup.
rclone mount Advanced users who want a configurable mount for supported cloud remotes Configure and authorize each remote first. Mount behavior and limitations vary by operating system and provider; Windows network mode requires a drive letter.

Before installing, check the current requirements for your operating system, file system, and account. Provider policies change: Microsoft’s requirements page, accessed October 7, 2026, listed Windows 10 22H2 or Windows 11 and macOS 15.8 or newer among supported requirements. Microsoft also said support for the OneDrive desktop app on Windows 10 21H2 and earlier ended August 15, 2026. Treat these as date-specific requirements, not timeless minimums.

Set up Google Drive for desktop

  1. Install Google Drive for desktop using Google’s official instructions, then sign in to the Google account whose files you want to access.

  2. Open Drive for desktop preferences and choose how My Drive syncs: Stream files or Mirror files. Google explains that streaming keeps files in the cloud and downloads them when needed; mirroring downloads a complete local copy of My Drive, available offline by default. See Google’s advanced guide to Drive for desktop.

  3. Open the Drive entry in File Explorer or Finder. In streaming mode, select a file or folder you need without a connection and choose Available offline. That selection uses local storage.

Important macOS behavior

On macOS 12.1 and later, Google Drive streaming uses Apple File Provider. Drive appears under Finder’s Locations. Moving an item out of the Drive location can move it to the cloud trash as well; if you want a copy elsewhere, hold Option while dragging. Grant macOS permissions when prompted. Google documents the File Provider behavior and Finder integration in its macOS guidance.

Set up OneDrive Files On-Demand

  2. Use Files On-Demand to keep items visible without downloading all their contents. In Finder or File Explorer, right-click a file or folder and choose Always keep on this device for items you need offline.

Linux users should check their specific distribution and file system before installing. Dropbox’s requirements name Ubuntu 18.04 or later and Fedora 28 or later, alongside supported file systems, and warn that its Linux desktop app is changing. Consult Dropbox’s current Linux requirements rather than assuming every Linux setup is supported.

Mount a cloud remote with rclone

Rclone is a command-line tool that can mount configured cloud remotes as file systems on Linux, FreeBSD, macOS, and Windows. It is more flexible than a provider-specific client, but you must configure and authorize each remote, and behavior differs by operating system and provider. Read the rclone mount documentation for platform-specific prerequisites and limitations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install rclone and configure the cloud service as a remote using rclone config. Follow the prompts to authorize access. For Google Drive, authorization may use a browser or a manual flow.

  2. Test the configured remote by listing its contents with rclone lsf remote:path, replacing remote:path with the name and path you configured.

  3. On Linux or macOS, mount a remote to an existing local mount point using the documented syntax: rclone mount remote:path/to/files /path/to/local/mount. On Windows, use a drive letter such as X:; Windows network mode requires a drive letter.

For Google Drive, rclone says its shared client ID is being retired during 2026 and strongly recommends creating your own client ID. Follow the current rclone Google Drive setup guide before configuring that remote; do not assume an older setup will authorize without changes.

Choose streaming, mirroring, or offline files

  • Choose streaming or on-demand access if you want cloud items in the file manager while conserving local disk space. Opening files requires connectivity unless the items are already cached or marked offline.
  • Choose mirroring when you want a complete local copy of the selected library and have enough storage. This is useful for offline work, but local changes and deletions can sync back to the cloud, so understand the provider’s sync behavior.
  • Mark specific files or folders offline when only part of your library needs to work without a connection. Google Drive calls this Available offline; OneDrive uses Always keep on this device.

If your offline working set is large, an external drive may provide extra room for local copies, but it does not mount cloud storage by itself. Check capacity, connector compatibility, and your computer’s support before relying on one.

Troubleshoot common problems

The cloud folder or drive does not appear

  • Confirm the desktop app is installed, running, and signed in to the intended account.
  • Check the vendor’s current operating-system and file-system requirements; unsupported or outdated setups can prevent the expected integration.
  • On macOS, review any permission prompts. Google Drive streaming on macOS 12.1 and later uses File Provider and appears in Finder under Locations.

A file will not open without internet

Streaming and Files On-Demand do not guarantee that every file is stored locally. Reconnect, open the item, and mark it for offline use before disconnecting. Allow time for the download or sync to finish.

A move or deletion affects the cloud copy

Cloud folders are synchronized, not merely local folders. A move or deletion can propagate to the account. In Google Drive on macOS using File Provider, moving an item out of Drive can trash the cloud item; Option-drag to copy it elsewhere instead.

Rclone cannot mount the remote

  • Check that the remote name and path match the configuration and that the remote can be listed before mounting.
  • Revisit the provider authorization flow if access was denied or credentials have changed.
  • On Windows network mode, provide a drive letter. Consult rclone’s current documentation for backend-specific requirements rather than assuming mount behavior is identical across services.
