Before either PuTTY or MobaXterm can connect, the VM must be running an SSH service and reachable from your computer’s network. Get the required connection details and access permissions from the VM’s administrator or provider.
Before you connect: get the VM’s SSH details
An SSH client cannot supply missing VM access or network configuration. Ask the environment owner for the values and confirm that SSH is enabled and reachable from your client network.
- Host: the VM’s hostname or IP address.
- Username: the account assigned to you on the VM.
- Port: the SSH port configured for that VM.
- Authentication: the approved method, such as a password or private key, and any required key passphrase.
- Network access: confirmation that the VM is running an SSH service and that your network is permitted to reach it.
These values depend on the specific VM and its network setup; do not assume a default account, port, or credential will work.
Connect with PuTTY or MobaXterm
In either client, create an SSH connection and enter the host, username, port, and authentication information supplied by the VM owner. PuTTY is an SSH client; its manual also covers X11 forwarding. The available PuTTY documentation does not establish a current, exact click-by-click walkthrough, so use the version’s own interface and manual for its specific fields. MobaXterm documents session settings for the remote host, username, port, and private key, as well as saved sessions. Create an SSH session, fill in the assigned connection details, select the configured key if key authentication is required, and save the session if you expect to reconnect. After connecting, the client should present an SSH terminal session. If the server prompts to verify its host key, confirm the fingerprint with the VM administrator or provider when required by your organization; do not treat an unexpected host-key change as routine.

Choose the client for your workflow

The documented features help match a client to a task, but do not establish that one is universally faster, more reliable, or more secure. A basic shell connection does not require file transfer, X11 forwarding, or gateway routing.
SSH terminal access is not a remote desktop
An SSH session gives you a command-line connection; it does not display the VM’s full desktop. MobaXterm describes X11 forwarding as “automatic DISPLAY redirection through SSH channel.” This optional feature can route graphical application output over SSH, but the remote application and server configuration must support it. If you only need a shell, leave X11 forwarding out of the setup.

For a full desktop, use a remote-desktop method supported and configured for that VM. The appropriate method depends on the VM’s operating system and environment; the SSH client settings alone do not configure desktop access.

- Connection times out or cannot reach the host: verify the address, that the VM is running, and that the provider or administrator allows SSH traffic from your network.
- Connection is refused: ask whether the SSH service is running and whether the supplied port is correct.
- Authentication fails: confirm the username and whether the VM expects a password or a particular private key; check that the key and passphrase are the ones assigned to you.
- Host-key warning appears: verify the fingerprint or any reported host-key change with the administrator before proceeding.
- A graphical application does not appear: confirm that X11 forwarding is supported and configured at both ends, and that the remote application is graphical.
Do not disable authentication or broadly open network access as a generic fix. Provider-specific firewall and provisioning steps are not established here; follow the instructions for your own environment.
