To accept international donations in WordPress, use a donation plugin such as GiveWP for the form, donor records and receipts, then connect payment accounts that support your organization’s countries, currencies and payment methods. WordPress does not determine whether a donor can pay from another country; Stripe, PayPal and local regulations do. Configure the accounts, currencies, webhooks and security settings, test every payment path in Test Mode, and only then switch to Live Mode.
How international donations work in WordPress
A WordPress donation plugin is the coordination layer. It displays the form, records donor details, creates receipts and sends payment requests to a connected processor. The processor—not WordPress—decides where the organization may receive funds, which currencies it can settle, and which methods are available to donors.
- WordPress and the plugin: form fields, suggested amounts, recurring settings, donor records, receipts and reporting.
- Payment processor: card, wallet, bank or PayPal authorization; country eligibility; settlement currency; identity verification; refunds and payouts.
- Your organization: legal registration, charitable purpose, tax treatment, sanctions screening, privacy notices and donor communications.
GiveWP provides forms that can be placed with a block, shortcode, widget or a dedicated form page. Its documented integrations include Stripe and PayPal, plus offline-donation recording.
Check eligibility before installing anything
Confirm the charity and payment-account rules
Verify that the organization is legally able to solicit and receive donations in its home country and in the jurisdictions it targets. Check registration, fundraising, tax, sanctions and payment rules for both the organization and its donors. Processor approval is separate from WordPress configuration.

Stripe’s requirements state that a donation must be tied to a specific charitable purpose; personal or peer-to-peer money transmission is not an acceptable substitute. Stripe also requires compliance with applicable local laws. PayPal applies its own country, account-verification and acceptable-use requirements.
“To accept tips or donations through Stripe Payments, a tip must be given for goods or services provided, while a donation must be tied to a specific charitable purpose.”
Open and verify the processor accounts
Create the Stripe and/or PayPal account in the organization’s legal name, complete identity and charity verification, and confirm the account’s supported settlement currencies. Availability, fees, conversion costs and payout timing vary by account country and can change, so use the current processor documentation for the specific account.

Choose a WordPress donation setup
| Option | What it provides | Use it when | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| GiveWP with Stripe and/or PayPal | Custom donation forms, donor records, receipts, Stripe payment methods, PayPal donations and offline-donation recording. | You need a full donation workflow with more than a single payment button. | Every gateway still requires its own eligible, verified processor account and supported currency. |
| Simple PayPal/Stripe button plugin | Separate buttons can be configured with their own language and currency. | A small site needs a few straightforward payment buttons rather than a full donor-management workflow. | Confirm whether the plugin provides the receipts, recurring donations, reporting and webhook handling you require; those capabilities are not established here. |
| Country-routing extension for GiveWP | Routes PayPal donations to different PayPal Business accounts. | Legally distinct charities share one site and must receive funds in separate accounts. | Requires GiveWP and PayPal Donations, and does not route donations made through Stripe or other GiveWP gateways. |
Set up GiveWP with Stripe or PayPal
- Install and configure the donation plugin. In WordPress, install GiveWP, create a form, choose the donation amounts and donor fields, and publish it with a block, shortcode, widget or single-form page.
- Connect the processor. Open Donations → Settings → Payment Gateways, choose Stripe and/or PayPal, and complete the account-connection flow. Use the legal organization and verified account, not a personal account.
- Configure webhooks where required. Follow the gateway’s connection screen to create or confirm webhook endpoints. Webhooks let the plugin receive asynchronous payment, refund and failure events; a browser redirect alone is not sufficient for reliable records.
- Enable the gateway on the form. A connected account is not automatically available on every form. Select the enabled gateway in that form’s payment settings and save.
- Select a compatible currency. Set the form currency to one supported by every gateway you enable on that form. If a currency switcher changes the form’s currency, verify each resulting currency as well.
- Enable useful payment methods. Stripe methods activated in the Stripe account can be exposed through the integration. Depending on the account and donor country, this can include cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and ACH. PayPal availability and methods likewise depend on the donor’s and merchant’s countries.
- Secure the site. Serve the live donation page over HTTPS with a valid SSL certificate. GiveWP’s Stripe guidance notes that Stripe fields will not render on a live form without SSL.
Handle currencies and international payment methods
Distinguish display currency from settlement currency
A donor may see an amount in the form’s selected currency, while the processor settles funds according to the merchant account’s supported currencies and conversion rules. Decide whether each form has one fixed currency or whether a currency switcher is necessary. Show the currency code or symbol unambiguously beside every amount.
Use only currencies the enabled gateways support
GiveWP documents the error “No Payment Gateways Available in Your Selected Currency” when the selected currency is unsupported by the available gateways. The usual fix is to select a compatible currency, enable a gateway that supports the chosen currency, or remove the incompatible gateway from that form.
Match methods to your audience
Cards provide broad coverage, while wallets can reduce checkout friction on supported devices. ACH is account- and country-dependent and is not a universal international method. Do not promise a particular wallet, bank method or local payment option until it is activated and visible for the relevant processor account and donor location.

- 【Raffle Ticket Box with 4 x 0.4-Inch Slot】 The top slot is precision-sized for raffle tickets, voting slips, and paper notes, so entries drop in cleanly without jamming at school raffles and contests. Fold or trim oversized slips first and the line keeps moving. Check your insert sizes before the event
- 【Shatter-Resistant Acrylic, See-Through Body】 Crystal-clear acrylic walls keep every bill and ticket in plain view, so donors watch their gift drop in and land, and you can check the collection level at a glance without opening the lid. The shatter-resistant body survives busy events, stays light enough to move between tables, and wipes clean for reuse
- 【4 x 6-Inch Sign Holder for Any Event】 The built-in holder fits standard 4 x 6-inch paper or cards. Swap the insert to relabel the box as a tip jar, tip box, suggestion box, ballot box, raffle box, or a go-to among donation boxes for fundraising events and giveaways. No tools needed; display cards are not included
- 【Donation Box with Lock and 2 Keys】 The keyed lock keeps collected cash and tickets secure while you step away from the table or between pickups. Two keys are included, one for the organizer and one spare. Seat the lid fully before locking
- 【Compact 6.2 x 4.6 x 4.0-Inch Countertop Size】 Measuring 6.2 x 4.6 x 4.0 inches, it fits bake sales, office front desks, concession stands, reception counters, and service stations without crowding your display space, yet holds plenty for steady collections
Test before accepting live money
Use the processor’s Test Mode and GiveWP’s test settings to exercise the complete workflow. Switch to Live Mode only after the form, account and notifications have passed these checks:
- A successful card or PayPal donation creates the expected donor record and receipt.
- A declined or otherwise failed transaction shows a clear error and does not create a false completed donation.
- Webhook events update the donation when the browser is closed or delayed after payment.
- Refunds are reflected in the donor record and any related notifications.
- Each enabled currency displays a payment option; an unsupported currency produces a deliberate configuration fix rather than a dead checkout.
- Recurring settings, if used, behave as expected for the connected account and are clearly disclosed to the donor.
- Stripe fields render on the HTTPS live page after the final switch from Test Mode to Live Mode.
Make a small real-money transaction after launch only if the organization’s policies allow it, then reconcile the processor transaction with the WordPress record.

Route donations to different charities
If separate legal charities share one WordPress site, do not treat a country selector as a substitute for separate financial ownership. A country-routing extension for GiveWP can direct PayPal donations to separate PayPal Business accounts. It requires GiveWP and PayPal Donations, and its routing does not apply to Stripe or other GiveWP gateways.
Define the routing rules, disclose which legal entity receives each donation, and reconcile each PayPal account independently. Obtain legal and tax advice before pooling forms for organizations in different jurisdictions.
Troubleshoot common failures
No payment gateways are available
Check the form currency, the site-wide currency, any currency-switcher setting and the currencies enabled by each connected account. Remove gateways that cannot process the selected currency or create separate forms for different currency groups.

Stripe fields are blank or missing in Live Mode
Confirm that the donation page uses HTTPS and has a valid SSL certificate, then verify that the live Stripe account—not the test account—is connected and enabled on the form.
A payment succeeds but the donation remains pending
Review the webhook endpoint, signing or connection status and the processor event log. Confirm that the site can receive gateway callbacks and that security or caching rules are not blocking them.
A donor cannot see a wallet or local method
Payment methods are account- and country-dependent. Confirm activation in the processor dashboard, the donor’s device and location, the form currency and the integration’s enabled-method settings.
Funds reach the wrong organization
Check which processor account is connected to the form and whether a routing extension is being used. Country routing is limited to the supported PayPal setup; it does not redirect Stripe transactions.
The practical answer
Use a donation plugin to manage the WordPress experience, but judge international reach by the verified Stripe or PayPal accounts behind it. GiveWP is a documented starting point for Stripe and PayPal forms. Select only compatible currencies and payment methods, configure webhooks and HTTPS, test successful and failed scenarios in Test Mode, and publish clear legal and tax information before accepting live donations.
