To accept appointment bookings in WordPress, install a booking plugin, define the services and times you offer, configure what happens after a client books, and add the plugin’s booking form or calendar to a page. The right setup depends on whether you need a simple solo-provider calendar, staff and service management, event bookings, or requests that you review and quote manually.
Choose the booking workflow before choosing a plugin
Start by deciding what a successful booking should do. A one-person consultation calendar has different needs from a business with several employees, multiple services, or classes. Write down the requirements that affect your choice:
- Confirmation: Should a client’s selection be confirmed automatically, or should you review the request first?
- Services: Do you offer one appointment type, or several with different durations, prices, or availability?
- People and capacity: Is there one provider, a team with individual schedules, or a class or event with limited places?
- Payments: Do clients pay during booking, and does the plugin support your required payment provider?
- Operations: Do you need calendar synchronization, reminders, custom customer fields, or video-meeting integrations?
- Edition: Which required features are included in the free version, and which require a paid edition?
Compare these requirements against the plugin’s current listing and documentation. Feature availability can differ by edition and can change over time.

Other options listed in the WordPress.org appointment booking directory include LatePoint, Bookly, Booking Calendar, Fluent Booking, and Appointment Hour Booking. The directory describes LatePoint as handling appointments or events and payments; Bookly as managing calendars, reminders, and payments; Booking Calendar as covering time-slot appointments and rentals or events; and Appointment Hour Booking as defining start times and durations. Use these summaries to build a shortlist, then verify that each candidate supports your exact workflow.
The directory’s displayed active-installation counts are adoption figures, not evidence of quality or suitability. On October 4, 2026, it showed 100,000+ for LatePoint, 90,000+ for Amelia, 60,000+ for Bookly, and 50,000+ for Simply Schedule Appointments. Those counts do not establish reliability, customer satisfaction, or booking results.

Install the plugin and configure your availability
- Open the plugin installer: In the WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New Plugin. Search for the plugin you chose and install it, or use the plugin’s upload option if you have its ZIP file.
- Activate and start setup: Select Activate after installation. Simply Schedule Appointments documents a setup wizard after activation; follow the selected plugin’s setup flow.
- Add appointment types or services: Enter the services clients can book. Set each service’s duration and, where supported and included in your edition, price, capacity, or assigned staff.
- Set working hours and unavailable dates: Define when bookings may be made and add blackout periods or other unavailable times. For a team, configure the relevant staff schedules if the plugin supports them.
- Configure the booking process: Set the customer details you need, confirmation and notification behavior, and any payment or calendar options your chosen plugin and edition support.
Do not assume that a feature such as payment processing, calendar synchronization, staff assignment, or SMS reminders is included just because the plugin offers it in some edition. Check the current plan details before designing the workflow around it.
Add the booking form or calendar to a WordPress page
Create or edit the page where customers should book. Use the plugin’s supported block, shortcode, or page-builder module, then save and preview the page. The documented shortcode for Simply Schedule Appointments is [ssa_booking]. Amelia documents [ameliastepbooking] for step-by-step booking, [ameliacatalogbooking] for its catalog flow, and an event-list shortcode for event bookings. Confirm shortcode names and available display options in the plugin’s current documentation before publishing.

Check the complete customer journey
Before sharing the page, make a test booking using the same public-facing flow a client will use. Check the full sequence rather than only whether the form appears:
- Does the page show the intended services and available times?
- Can a customer provide the required details and submit the booking?
- Does the booking receive the expected confirmation or review status?
- Do the configured customer and provider notifications arrive?
- If enabled, does the payment or calendar process behave as configured?
Fix any mismatch between the displayed availability and your actual schedule before directing customers to the page.
