The original iPhone combined a phone, an iPod, and internet functions in one touchscreen device when Apple introduced it on January 9, 2007. Compared with modern models, it had a much smaller, lower-resolution screen, a basic 2-megapixel camera, EDGE cellular data, and a 30-pin connector. Recent iPhones add OLED displays, 5G, advanced cameras, USB-C or wireless charging, and newer software and sensors.

What the original iPhone was designed to do

Apple introduced the first-generation iPhone on January 9, 2007, as a single device for phone calls, iPod music and video, and internet communication. Apple highlighted email, web browsing, search, and maps alongside a multi-touch interface. Steve Jobs described the design as one that used fingers as its pointing device. Apple’s announcement set out that original vision.

Its interface was not just a touchscreen layered over a conventional phone. Apple said the device used an accelerometer to change display orientation, a proximity sensor to switch off the display when held near the user’s ear, and an ambient light sensor. These were useful early integrations, though modern iPhones add newer authentication and sensing features.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Display: 3.5 inches then, larger OLED screens now

Apple’s archived technical specifications list the original iPhone’s 3.5-inch display at 480 × 320 pixels and 163 pixels per inch. That was a substantial shared surface for calls, music, and web pages in 2007, but it is small by current phone standards. The iPhone 17 provides a recent mainstream comparison: Apple lists a 6.3-inch OLED display at 460 ppi. Screen size and pixel density do not alone determine display quality, but they show how much more screen area and detail a contemporary model offers.

Apple’s announced iPhone Duo points to a further design change: it has a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display. As of October 4, 2026, it had been announced but was not yet available; Apple stated availability would begin October 23. Apple’s announcement gives those display sizes and timing.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Camera: a basic snapshot camera versus modern imaging systems

The original iPhone had a 2-megapixel rear camera. Apple’s announced iPhone 18 Pro has a 48-megapixel main camera with variable aperture, a much more capable hardware platform for capturing detail and adapting to different lighting conditions. Megapixels are only one part of image quality, and the figures here are specifications rather than a direct image-quality test. The original model’s archived specification does not establish modern computational photography or advanced camera modes.

Connectivity: EDGE and early Wi-Fi versus 5G and newer wireless standards

The first iPhone supported GSM quad-band cellular service with EDGE data, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR. These specifications reflect the networks and wireless standards of its time. Apple lists 5G support for the iPhone 17; for its 2026 Pro models, it identifies Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread.

Those are device capabilities, not a guarantee of service everywhere. The cited specifications do not establish whether a particular original iPhone can activate or make calls on a carrier’s network today. Compatibility depends on carrier networks and policies, so do not assume a surviving handset can still function as a phone.

Connectors, charging, and storage

The original used Apple’s 30-pin dock connector for its wired connection and a 3.5-mm stereo headphone jack. The iPhone 17 specification lists USB-C, MagSafe, and Qi2 wireless charging, illustrating the shift to newer wired and wireless accessories. The listed modern features belong to that named model; they should not be read as a universal specification for every iPhone generation.

Storage figures for the original differ by the point in its sales history being described. Apple’s June 18, 2007 launch announcement said the U.S. models would be offered in 4GB and 8GB capacities, priced at $499 and $599 respectively, with availability beginning June 29. Apple’s later archived technical-specification page lists 8GB and 16GB capacities. Those are different snapshots, not conflicting descriptions of one launch offer. See Apple’s June 2007 announcement and the archived original iPhone specifications.

Sensors, authentication, and software

The original’s accelerometer, proximity sensor, and ambient light sensor supported practical interactions such as rotating the display and turning it off during a call. The iPhone 17 adds Face ID, while Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro announcement identifies the A20 Pro chip and iOS 27. These examples show the transition from a novel multi-touch phone to devices that combine biometric authentication, more capable processors, and much newer operating systems.

Software is also a major dividing line: the original’s advertised internet functions included email, web browsing, search, and maps, but its announcement should not be mistaken for a list of features or services available on a modern iPhone. The cited historical specification does not establish that an original device can run current apps or software.

Battery figures need their original context

Apple’s archived original-iPhone specification lists up to 8 hours of talk time, 250 hours of standby, 6 hours of internet use, 7 hours of video playback, and 24 hours of audio playback. Apple noted that its battery tests used preproduction units in May and June 2007 and that results could vary. These are historical company estimates, not results directly comparable with current-model claims.

For the iPhone 18 Pro generation, Apple publishes up to 36 hours of video playback for eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro and up to 45 hours for eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro Max. These are Apple’s claims for those models, not independent measurements; the different era and test context make a direct battery-life comparison unreliable. Apple’s announcement specifies the eSIM-only qualification.

What changed most

  • The screen became the main workspace: from a 3.5-inch, 163-ppi display to larger, higher-density OLED screens.
  • Connectivity moved on: EDGE and early Wi-Fi gave way to 5G and newer wireless standards in the cited modern examples.
  • Hardware became more integrated: contemporary examples add Face ID, advanced camera systems, newer processors, and wireless charging.
  • Physical connections changed: the original’s 30-pin connector and headphone jack contrast with USB-C and wireless charging on iPhone 17.
