Fast apps are not powered by one magic server. They often combine nearby cache servers that can deliver eligible files quickly with load balancers that direct backend requests to available application servers. Whether a request feels instant depends on what it asks for, whether a usable cached copy exists, how the app and its infrastructure are configured, and the network between the user and the service.
What is a content delivery network (CDN)?
A content delivery network is a distributed system that stores and serves eligible copies of content from locations closer to users. Those locations are commonly called edge points of presence. The original content remains on an origin server; the CDN is not a replacement for the web host that stores or generates it. Cloudflare’s CDN explainer describes the distinction between a CDN and a traditional web host, while Google Cloud’s overview explains how its edge network serves content closer to users.
For example, a site might keep its image files at an origin and let a CDN serve copies from edge locations. A visitor’s browser requests an image, the request is routed to an edge, and the edge checks whether it has a matching cached object that it is allowed to serve.
What happens on a cache hit?
If the requested object is present in the edge cache and the request matches the relevant cache rules, the edge can return it without asking the origin to process that request. This shortens the route the content takes and can reduce work at the origin. It does not mean every part of the app is running at the edge.

What happens on a cache miss?
If the edge does not have a usable copy, it fetches the object from the origin through the configured path, returns it to the user, and may store it for a later request if the content and caching rules allow. The first request for an object may therefore need an origin trip even when subsequent eligible requests can be served from cache. AWS’s CloudFront documentation also describes regional edge caches that can sit between a point of presence and an origin.
How does a CDN improve website load times?
A CDN can make delivery faster when it serves a cache hit from an edge location that is closer to the user than the origin. The browser still needs to make a request and receive a response, but the edge may avoid a trip to the origin for that object. The size and effect of that benefit depend on the user’s location, network conditions, routing, and whether the requested content is cacheable and already present.

Not all app traffic is static content. A personalized account page, a live search result, or an API response may need application logic and current data from a backend. A CDN’s presence alone does not establish that these responses are cached or served at the edge.

Cacheability depends on the content, cache key, origin headers, and CDN rules. As one provider-specific example, Cloudflare documents that static files such as images, CSS, and JavaScript are cacheable by default on its service, while dynamic HTML is not cached by default. Its cache rules can change that behavior. These defaults should not be treated as universal settings for every CDN.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Cache keys matter because they determine which requests are considered equivalent for reuse. If a response varies by a query parameter, cookie, language, or other request detail, the cache configuration must account for that difference where relevant. Otherwise, a cached response may not be appropriate for another request. The right configuration balances reuse with correctness and privacy.
What is the difference between a CDN and a traditional web host?
A web host stores the original site files or runs the application that produces responses. A CDN distributes eligible copies of content and delivers them from edge locations. They can work together: the CDN handles requests it can satisfy from cache, while cache misses and requests requiring application work continue to the origin or backend.

| Layer | Main role | What it handles |
|---|---|---|
| Web host or origin | Store original content or generate responses | Source for CDN fetches and application work that cannot be fulfilled from cache |
| CDN edge | Cache and deliver eligible content nearer to users | Matching requests for objects that are present and allowed by cache rules |
| Load balancer | Distribute requests among configured backend targets | Requests that need backend processing, according to its routing and health configuration |
The roles can be combined in a cloud architecture, but they solve different problems: a CDN caches and delivers eligible content, a load balancer distributes backend requests, and security services can apply traffic policies. Google Cloud’s web application hosting reference architecture illustrates one provider’s design with global external Application Load Balancing, Cloud CDN, multi-region backends, and Cloud Armor. It is an example, not a required pattern for every app.
What does a load balancer do?
A load balancer accepts incoming requests and directs them to configured application targets. This spreads backend work across servers or other targets rather than sending every request to one machine. Amazon Web Services describes this role as routing incoming client traffic to registered targets, such as EC2 instances, in one or more Availability Zones. See How Elastic Load Balancing works.

Target selection and health checks
The routing algorithm depends on the load balancer type and its configuration. For AWS Elastic Load Balancing’s Application Load Balancer, the documented default target-group algorithm is round robin; that is not a universal rule for all load balancers. Health checks help determine which registered targets are considered healthy and affect routing. AWS also documents a fail-open case for its Application Load Balancer when all targets in a target group are unhealthy, so “unhealthy targets are always avoided” is too broad a claim.
A load balancer can route around unhealthy targets according to its configured behavior, but it cannot make a broken application healthy or guarantee that a request will succeed. The number and location of targets, health-check settings, listener rules, and backend capacity all shape what happens next.
How the layers work together in one request
- The browser requests content. It may ask for a static image or script, or for a response that requires application logic.
- DNS and routing direct the request. The request reaches an appropriate CDN edge or service endpoint, depending on the setup.
- The edge checks its cache. If a matching object is present and eligible, the edge returns it. If not, it fetches the object from the origin through the configured path.
- Backend work is distributed. When the request needs application processing, a load balancer can choose among configured targets and apply its routing and health-check behavior.
- The response returns to the browser. The app may also store an eligible response at the edge for later requests, subject to its cache policy.
This is a simplified path, not a promise that every app uses the same components or sequence. Some services combine CDN, load balancing, and security features; others use different routing or hosting designs.
Why “instant” is an impression, not a guarantee
A screen can appear quickly because important assets are cached nearby, the backend responds promptly, and the user’s connection is good. But a cache miss still needs an origin fetch, and dynamic or personalized requests may require backend processing. Network conditions, backend load, cache rules, and the work required to generate a response can all affect completion time. Neither a CDN nor a load balancer guarantees an instant app.
