ARRK Engineering’s HDMI-APIX3 converter is a professional engineering tool that feeds video from an HDMI source to an APIX3-compatible automotive display. It is designed for display analysis, debugging and validation—not as a consumer adapter for connecting ordinary screens.
What the HDMI-APIX3 converter does
Announced by Inova Semiconductors on 11 February 2021, the standalone converter accepts video from an HDMI source and sends image and control data to an APIX3 display. Its firmware can adjust HDMI resolution automatically for the connected display or let an engineer set it manually, including changing output resolution during runtime. The device also supports display analysis, component debugging, driver-function simulation, and reception and evaluation of MII Ethernet data. These capabilities make it useful for checking an automotive display without relying on the complete vehicle infotainment system as the image source.
APIX3—Automotive Pixel Link 3—is Inova’s third-generation multichannel serializer/deserializer technology for high-resolution in-vehicle video. Inova’s 2021 announcement describes multiple display connections and bandwidth up to 12 Gbit/s, with support for HD and Ultra HD displays. That figure describes APIX3 capability in the cited announcement; it should not be read as the rate of every individual link or as a performance measurement of the ARRK converter.
How engineers use it to test a display
The practical advantage is a compact, dedicated source for feeding known HDMI content into an APIX3-compatible display. Engineers can assess display behavior, investigate components, and prototype or review HMI concepts without first assembling the earlier-style setup of a developer board and a separately configured computer. A contemporaneous report described ARRK’s prototype as a box intended to simulate the necessary original image-source functions.

- Connect the test setup. Attach an HDMI source at the converter’s front HDMI interface, connect the APIX3 device under test at the rear, and provide 12 VDC power. The rear also accommodates a removable SD card; the front has USB and Ethernet interfaces.
- Set a suitable video mode. Use automatic resolution adjustment or choose a resolution manually for the connected display. Because the integrated microcontroller can change output resolution during runtime, teams can examine display response across supported modes without treating each mode as a separate fixed-source setup.
- Run the intended evaluation. Use the firmware’s analysis and debugging functions to examine the display or components. The converter can also simulate driver functions and receive and evaluate MII Ethernet data, so tests can cover more than the visible image alone.
- Apply the result to the program workflow. The device is positioned for OEMs, system developers and vehicle manufacturers conducting development, HMI prototyping, durability testing, general measurement, or release validation of APIX3-networked infotainment solutions.
The announcement does not provide a detailed operating manual, named software screens, supported resolution list, or test-procedure limits. Those implementation details should be confirmed with ARRK for the specific converter and display under evaluation.
ARRK converter and Alfamation test modules compared
These products address related but different engineering workflows. ARRK’s instrument is an HDMI video source and display-analysis tool. Alfamation’s Flexmedia XM APIX3TD1 transmitter and XM APIX3RD1 receiver are modular test equipment aimed at high fault coverage, high-speed processing, and integration into automated test systems.

The converter is also downward compatible with APIX2 displays, according to the product information summarized in the contemporaneous reports. That compatibility can help when a team needs to work with an existing APIX2 display, but does not make the unit a universal video converter. Alfamation’s modules are the more directly documented fit where a test setup needs software interfaces or manufacturing-oriented automation.

Neither system should be confused with a generic HDMI cable or adapter. APIX3 is an automotive display-link technology, and testing it requires equipment designed for that link and the intended display or test path.
