Testing helps teams build better software faster when it gives developers quick, trustworthy feedback about a change. Finding a regression while the code is still fresh usually makes it easier to investigate and correct than discovering it after more work has piled on. The goal is not to maximize test count: it is to get useful evidence early without letting slow, flaky, or costly checks become a bottleneck.

How does testing help build better software?

Testing shortens the distance between a code change and information about its effects. A useful check tells a developer whether an important behavior still works, whether an integration has broken, or whether a change needs closer investigation. When those checks run during development and integration, a failure is easier to connect to the work that caused it.

That feedback loop can help teams find regressions earlier, spend less time reconstructing what changed, and make smaller corrections. It also gives developers more evidence when making changes. A passing test is evidence about the behavior it checks, not proof that the whole product is correct, secure, or free of defects.

Testing is part of delivery, not just a final gate

Continuous testing means checking software throughout delivery rather than postponing every test until development is declared complete. In a continuous-integration workflow, code changes trigger builds and automated checks. A meaningful failure can then be investigated while the change and its context are still familiar. DORA describes fast feedback on changes across the software delivery lifecycle as a central testing practice; see its guidance on test automation and continuous integration.

Testing contributes to performance; it does not guarantee it

DORA’s 2021 Accelerate State of DevOps Report said organizations classified as elite performers meeting reliability targets were 3.7 times more likely to leverage continuous testing. That is an association reported among organizations in the study, not proof that continuous testing alone caused better delivery performance. Testing is one capability in a larger system that also depends on practices such as integration, team collaboration, architecture, and operational reliability. The figure is from 2021 and should not be read as a current causal estimate. Read the 2021 report.

Does testing slow down software development?

It can. Tests take time to write, execute, diagnose, and maintain; they may also depend on test data and environments. A suite that runs slowly delays feedback. Flaky checks—those that fail unpredictably rather than because of a real defect—can waste investigation time and weaken confidence in the results.

The relevant comparison is not “testing versus no testing.” It is the cost of a check against the value and timeliness of the signal it provides. A fast, reliable test that catches a consequential regression can save later investigation and rework. A brittle, redundant, or low-value test can consume time without providing enough useful information.

Keep feedback quick enough to act on

DORA’s test automation guidance states: “Developers should be able to get feedback from automated tests in less than ten minutes both on local workstations and from the continuous integration system.” This is a recommended target, not a claim that every team currently meets it. If the checks developers need most take longer, consider which tests must run on every change and whether the suite can be made faster or more focused.

Measure the suite as well as the product

  • Track how long important checks take and whether delays are growing.
  • Notice failures that are hard to reproduce or routinely unrelated to product defects.
  • Review tests for redundancy, brittleness, and maintenance cost relative to their value.
  • When a defect is found, add a focused regression check if it can reliably catch that failure again.

More coverage is not automatically better if it comes with slow feedback or unreliable signals. A suite earns trust when its failures are understandable, reproducible, and likely to reveal something worth fixing.

What should a development team automate?

Automate checks that are repeatable, valuable to run often, and practical to verify consistently. Keep human-led testing in the workflow for questions that scripted checks cannot judge well, such as whether a feature is understandable or whether an unexpected user path exposes a problem.

Testing activity Where automation helps Where human judgment remains useful
Repeatable regression checks Run the same important behavior checks after changes and during integration. Investigate failures, new risks, or behavior not covered by the checks.
Exploratory testing Automated checks can handle known, repeatable cases around the feature. People can explore unexpected paths and ask questions that were not scripted in advance.
Usability testing Automation can verify specific observable behaviors when those are defined. People need to assess whether the experience makes sense for users.
Acceptance testing Automate stable acceptance criteria that can be checked consistently. People need to judge whether the product meets user needs and intended outcomes.

DORA recommends combining automated and manual testing throughout delivery. Developers and testers should collaborate during that work, and builds should be available for exploratory testing. Automation is a way to make repeatable feedback more available; it is not a substitute for every kind of quality judgment.

How can automated testing speed up development?

  1. Choose a meaningful check. Start with a behavior or failure mode that matters to users or to the system’s operation. Avoid automating a test simply to increase the test count.
  2. Run it close to the change. Make useful checks available during development and integration so failures appear before more work depends on the change.
  3. Make failures actionable. Keep results reproducible and clear enough that a developer can tell what failed and investigate the cause.
  4. Use failures to improve protection. When a defect is discovered, add a focused regression check where a reliable test can prevent the same failure from slipping through again.
  5. Review and improve the suite. Remove or repair checks whose upkeep, runtime, or noise costs more than the feedback they provide.
  6. Keep human testing in the loop. Use exploratory, usability, and acceptance work to examine behavior and user needs that automated checks may not capture.

This approach makes testing a feedback loop rather than a single inspection at the end. It does not mean every test must run at every stage: teams need to choose a useful fast set for frequent feedback and maintain other appropriate checks in the delivery process.

How to add visual checks for web changes

For a web interface, screenshots can help people inspect how a page looks before and after a change. A screenshot is an artifact for visual review, not a complete test: it does not by itself establish that interactions work, that the page is accessible, or that the software behaves correctly. Keep capture conditions consistent—such as the target page and viewport—so reviewers can interpret differences. Pair visual review with behavioral checks and human exploration where those are needed.

  1. Identify a page or state where a visual regression would matter.
  2. Capture the same state before and after a change using your existing browser or capture setup.
  3. Review the images for meaningful changes, then investigate rather than treating every visual difference as a defect.
  4. Keep the capture and review process repeatable, and avoid adding a screenshot check that creates noise without useful feedback.

Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot artifact, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request capture. This cURL example saves a WebP screenshot of the target page; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses indicate the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. ScreenshotNeo captures screenshots; it does not replace your test assertions or decide whether a visual difference is a defect. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

How should teams choose tests and tools?

There is no single testing approach that fits every team. Choose checks and supporting tools by the kind of feedback the team needs and the cost of obtaining and maintaining it.

  • Fit: Does the approach work with the team’s language, application, and build pipeline?
  • Feedback speed: How soon can developers get a result they can use?
  • Signal quality: Are failures reproducible and likely to indicate a real issue?
  • Maintenance: How much work is needed to keep tests, data, and environments dependable?
  • Human judgment: Does the question require exploration or assessment of user needs rather than a repeatable check?

Evaluate tools in the context of your workflow rather than assuming that a particular product or a larger suite automatically improves delivery. DORA also cautions that capability effects depend on context and that capabilities build on one another. Testing is most useful when the surrounding practices let teams integrate changes, understand results, and respond to problems.
