Technology is changing trucking through better crash prevention, connected fleet operations, electrification and increasingly automated driving. The near-term gains are most tangible in driver-assistance systems and fleet data; electric and autonomous trucks could reshape operations, but depend on charging, infrastructure, regulation and integration with the rest of the freight network.

Where trucking technology is making the clearest difference

These technologies do not all solve the same problem or have the same readiness. Driver-assistance systems intervene in specific driving situations. Cameras and telematics help fleets observe performance and make operating decisions. Electric powertrains change energy use and vehicle constraints. Autonomous systems aim to take over some driving tasks, initially in more predictable settings.

Technology What it can change Important limit
ADAS and onboard monitoring Crash prevention, hazard awareness and driver coaching Systems assist with defined situations; they do not remove the need for safe driving or appropriate supervision.
Connected fleet telematics Visibility into safety, fuel, maintenance and route operations Useful decisions depend on accurate data, suitable policies and managers acting on alerts.
Electric trucks Vehicle energy use and potentially operating costs Battery weight, vehicle price, charging time and depot power affect which routes are practical.
Autonomous trucks Driving tasks on routes and in conditions a system is designed to handle Deployment also requires terminals, dispatch, regulation and logistics processes to work together.

How safety technology can reduce risk

Automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning

Automatic emergency braking (AEB) can apply braking in response to a detected collision risk, while lane-departure warning alerts a driver when the truck is leaving its lane. In a 2024 U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) ITS Deployment Evaluation, trucks with AEB had roughly 40% fewer crashes, and trucks with lane-departure warning had roughly 21% fewer crashes. These are reported reductions associated with equipped trucks in that evaluation, not a guarantee that an individual truck or fleet will see the same result.

A separate 2024 USDOT and Virginia Tech Transportation Institute analysis examined 54,250 trucks across 117 fleets and 5.72 billion miles. It found a 21% lower crash rate for trucks equipped with lane-departure warning. The scale of the analysis makes it useful evidence for this particular system, but the result should not be treated as proof that every ADAS feature produces the same effect.

Cameras and onboard monitoring

Onboard cameras can give safety teams context around events that vehicle alerts alone may not explain. In the USDOT/Virginia Tech analysis, multiple camera views and 20-second trigger-event videos were uploaded to cloud servers. That approach illustrates both the potential value of video evidence and the need to decide what is recorded, who can access it, how long it is retained and how it will be used.

A commercial truck dash camera is a practical starting point for fleets seeking better visibility into incidents or coaching opportunities. Before choosing or installing one, operators should set clear policies for driver notice, access, storage, retention and use in performance management. Laws and workplace expectations can vary by location, so a fleet should check applicable requirements rather than assume a single policy fits everywhere.

Other driver-assistance features

Adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping functions and onboard monitoring can supplement braking and lane alerts. Their value depends on the truck, system capability, operating conditions and driver understanding. Fleets should train drivers on what a system can detect, when it may not respond as expected and which responsibilities remain with the person behind the wheel.

What connected fleet technology and telematics do

Fleet telematics connects information from vehicles, drivers, cameras, fuel use, maintenance and routes so managers can see patterns across operations. The 2025 Fleet Technology Trends Report describes this as a factual window into driver safety, fuel consumption and maintenance. AI video telematics can add event review, coaching and performance tracking.

The useful outcome is not simply collecting more data. A fleet can use it to identify recurring safety concerns, investigate unusual fuel use, schedule maintenance based on vehicle information and improve route or dispatch decisions. Results depend on the quality of the inputs, whether alerts are actionable, how consistently managers respond and whether workers trust the way monitoring is used. Cybersecurity and access controls also matter because connected systems handle operational and, in some cases, sensitive driver information.

Connected data can also help with logistics beyond the cab. USDOT’s 2024 ITS Deployment Evaluation reported that 67% of surveyed truck drivers said real-time parking information improved parking and Hours-of-Service compliance. That figure reflects driver survey responses, not a measured improvement for every route or fleet, but it shows how timely information can help drivers plan around a practical operating constraint.

Are electric trucks practical for long-haul freight?

Electric trucks can be a good fit where routes, charging access and vehicle economics align, but long-haul use is not determined by range alone. Battery weight, purchase cost, available depot electrical capacity, charging time and the truck’s daily schedule all affect whether an electric vehicle can complete its work productively.

Charging arrangements are central to fleet planning. The International Energy Agency (IEA) discusses megawatt charging, battery swapping and inductive charging pads at warehouses as possible ways to reduce charging-related constraints. Each approach depends on infrastructure and operating arrangements; none should be assumed to be available at a carrier’s terminals or along its routes without confirmation.

Electrification also interacts with automation. An autonomous truck may be able to use its operating hours differently from a driver-operated vehicle, which could make charging downtime a more consequential scheduling issue. IEA identifies charging time as a key constraint for autonomous electric freight and examines charging and swapping approaches as possible solutions. Fleets considering electric trucks need to assess energy supply and charging schedules alongside route suitability and total cost of ownership.

How close are autonomous trucks to replacing drivers?

Autonomous trucks are moving from testing toward limited commercial operation, not universal driver replacement. IEA reports that the first autonomous trucks on U.S. public roads began commercial operation in 2025. It estimates that autonomous vehicles could account for up to one-quarter of hub-to-hub truck sales in the United States, Europe and China by 2035. This is a forecast for those regions and that route model, not a prediction that one-quarter of all trucks everywhere will be autonomous by that date.

Highway hub-to-hub freight is a more tractable starting point than routes requiring frequent navigation through dense urban streets, varied pickup locations or unpredictable local conditions. But driving the highway segment is only one part of a freight movement. Loading and unloading, terminal handoffs, dispatch, maintenance and supply-chain coordination must also work with the autonomous operation.

TRATON has reported International and PlusAI autonomous test operations in Texas and described scaling Level 4 hub-to-hub operations as a logistics-integration challenge. Company-reported testing is evidence of deployment activity; it does not establish that autonomous trucking is broadly available to every carrier, route or shipper.

What determines whether a trucking technology is ready to deploy?

A fleet should assess technologies against its actual routes, assets and operating model rather than choosing based on novelty alone. The following questions help distinguish a promising feature from one that is ready for a particular operation.

  • Safety evidence: Is the claimed benefit supported by fleet-scale or real-world evidence, or does it come from a limited test or company announcement?
  • Total cost of ownership: What do acquisition, installation, energy or fuel, maintenance, software, downtime and training mean over the vehicle’s working life?
  • Operating fit: Does the technology work on the routes, in the weather and under the duty cycles the fleet actually runs?
  • Infrastructure: Are charging capacity, connectivity, service support and suitable terminals available where the operation needs them?
  • Integration: Can systems exchange information with dispatch, maintenance, terminals and existing fleet processes?
  • Data governance: Who can see vehicle, video and driver data; how is it secured; and when is it deleted?
  • Workforce impact: What training, consultation and new responsibilities will drivers, technicians, dispatchers and remote-support staff need?
  • Regulatory status: Are the vehicle and operating model permitted for the intended region and route?

How technology is likely to change trucking jobs and policy

Automation is more likely to change the mix of driving and support work over time than to eliminate truck-driving jobs everywhere at once. More automated operations can increase demand for vehicle maintenance, remote support, safety oversight, terminal coordination and technical training. The pace and scale of any job transition will depend on where systems are allowed to operate, how quickly carriers adopt them and whether the economics work for a given freight lane.

USDOT’s transportation technology recommendations identify data, first-responder coordination, workforce and responsible-AI questions. The National Academies’ 2024 guide also frames electric vehicles and connected or automated vehicles as emerging technologies with significant uncertainty and implementation risk. Those concerns make workforce planning, incident procedures, privacy and accountability part of deployment—not issues to leave until after a system is in service.

What fleets and drivers should take from the shift

For many fleets, the most immediate opportunity is to use proven assistance and connected tools well: select equipment suited to the work, train drivers, establish fair data policies and act on information that can improve safety or operations. Electric and autonomous trucks may bring larger changes, but their practical reach depends on route economics, energy infrastructure and coordination across the freight network. Technology will reshape trucking unevenly, lane by lane and task by task, rather than through a single overnight change.
