A streaming device can replace the cable box, but it does not automatically replace a cable or satellite subscription. It connects your TV to internet-delivered apps; you choose free channels, on-demand subscriptions, or a separate live-TV streaming plan depending on what you watch. A compatible smart TV may already do this without an extra player.
What a streaming device replaces—and what it does not
A streaming player connects to your television and gives you an interface for internet-based apps and programming. Roku describes its players as a way to watch live channels, news, sports, and on-demand entertainment over the internet instead of through a cable or satellite box. That is Roku’s description of its own product, not a guarantee that every channel or program is available.
The device replaces much of the set-top box’s role: it helps you open services and watch them on your TV. It does not itself provide a cable-style channel bundle. For that, you need a live-TV streaming subscription. On-demand apps are separate services too, and some require a paid subscription, rental, or purchase.
Google TV illustrates the distinction between a platform and its content: Google says the platform itself has no additional cost, while viewing may require subscriptions, downloads, or purchases. The same principle applies to streaming devices generally: hardware or a TV interface is not the same thing as the programming you access through it.

Three ways to watch after switching
Free, ad-supported channels and apps
Roku says its platform offers hundreds of free live channels and free apps. These can provide some news, entertainment, and other programming without a paid live-TV bundle. Availability and app catalogs can change, and a free service’s selection may not include the channels or programs you expect.
On-demand subscriptions
On-demand services provide libraries of films, series, and other programs to watch when you choose. Their subscription costs are separate from the price of a streaming player and from any live-TV plan. Add only the services your household expects to use when estimating monthly costs.

Live-TV streaming plans
A live-TV streaming plan is the closest substitute for a traditional channel package. YouTube TV, for example, says its plan includes more than 100 broadcast, cable, and regional sports networks, live sports, and unlimited DVR space. Its stated plan features also include up to six accounts and viewing on up to three devices at once. Channel lineups and availability depend on location and can change, so check the provider’s current lineup against the stations, sports, and channels you actually need.
How to compare the monthly cost with cable
Compare recurring household bills rather than judging the switch by the device’s purchase price. A streaming player is generally a one-time hardware purchase; subscriptions recur. Roku says its players do not have monthly equipment rental charges, but that does not make paid streaming services free.

Use this household-specific calculation:
Streaming monthly total = internet cost, if it is new or changes because of the switch + live-TV streaming plan, if wanted + chosen on-demand subscriptions + paid add-ons.
Compare that total with the actual cable or satellite bill, including the TV package, equipment rental, and fees shown on the bill. If you already pay for broadband and would keep it either way, do not count the full broadband bill as a new cost without explaining that assumption. No universal savings figure follows from the available provider information: the result depends on your current bill, internet arrangement, and selected services.

As a point-in-time example, the YouTube TV page showed a standard base-plan price of $82.99 per month when accessed October 4, 2026. It also displayed an introductory price of $59.99 per month for the first three months, but that promotion ended September 30, 2026 and was no longer available on the access date. Prices can change; check the provider’s live page before making a decision.

Do you need to buy a separate streaming player?
Not necessarily. Some smart TVs already have a supported app platform built in, so you may be able to install the services you want directly on the TV. Google TV is built into select televisions and is also available on separate streaming devices. A player is an optional upgrade if your TV lacks the apps or interface you need, or if you prefer a separate device.
Before buying, confirm that the TV has a compatible connection and that the services you want support the device. For Google TV device setup, Google lists an HDMI port, internet connection, Google Account, power outlet, and compatible mobile device among the requirements. For features such as 4K or HDR, Roku notes that the TV, ports, and content must also be compatible.
Roku currently names Streaming Stick, Streaming Stick Plus, Streaming Stick 4K, and Roku Ultra on its comparison page. Model availability, specifications, and prices can change, so use the current manufacturer listing if you are comparing hardware. A separate streaming media player is useful when needed, but it is not a required purchase for every household leaving cable.
What is the difference between YouTube TV and Google TV?
Google TV is a platform for finding and accessing apps and content on supported TVs and devices; it is not itself a live-TV channel package. YouTube TV is a paid live-TV streaming service with a channel lineup and plan features such as DVR and simultaneous viewing. You can use a streaming platform to access a service, but the platform and the subscription are distinct.
That distinction helps avoid a common budgeting mistake: buying a device or using a smart-TV interface does not include every app’s paid library or a live-TV bundle. Check the price and terms of each service separately.
