For a standard game, Steam’s usual rule is a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of playtime. Other purchase types have different conditions, and Steam may review requests outside its standard rules without guaranteeing approval.
How to request a Steam refund
- Go to Steam Support and sign in to the account that made the purchase.
- Open Purchases and select the item. If it is missing, Steam says it may be too far outside the refund window.
- Choose the problem that best describes the issue, then select I’d like to request a refund.
- Complete and submit the form. Choose Steam Wallet or the original payment method if Steam offers the option.
- Check your email for confirmation that Steam received the request and for a later message about its decision.
Steam refund rules by purchase type
The conditions depend on what you bought. Steam publishes its standard game rule and separate guidance for in-game purchases, pre-orders and gifts.

Standard game refunds
Valve’s Common Refund Questions states the usual threshold as a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours played. The FAQ counts online, offline and shared-library play. Missing either condition does not block you from submitting a request, but Steam reviews it rather than promising a refund. Steam says purchases significantly outside the 14-day window are not eligible under its guidance.
In-game purchases
For a missing in-game purchase, Steam recommends contacting the game’s support team first. If that team cannot resolve the issue, include your correspondence when submitting the refund request.

Pre-orders
For a pre-order bought more than six months before the refund request, Steam says a refund to the original payment method may not be possible, though Steam Wallet credit may still be requested. For Advanced Access pre-orders, the standard 14-day period begins on the game’s release date; Steam also allows a request before Advanced Access starts. See Steam’s pre-order refund guidance.
Gifts
For a redeemed gift, the recipient must use their own Steam Support account to approve the refund and removal. The purchaser then submits the request. If Steam approves it, the refund goes to the original payment method or to the purchaser’s Steam Wallet if that payment method cannot receive it. See Steam’s gift refund guidance.

Where the refund goes and how long it takes
For an approved refund, Steam says it may take up to seven days to appear. Steam Wallet credit may arrive in 24–48 hours; international payment methods can take longer. If more than seven days have passed, Steam advises contacting your bank about a pending refund.
If Steam approves a request within 24 hours of purchase, it may cancel the original transaction rather than issue a separate account credit. Your bank then releases the authorization hold; Steam says bank confirmation can take up to 30 days in many cases. The exact timing depends on the payment method and bank. If Steam declines the request
If you believe Steam mishandled the decision, Steam says you can submit another request with a detailed explanation. Explain the circumstances clearly; a new request is still subject to Steam’s review and does not guarantee approval.
