SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) moves live audio and video between compatible endpoints over an IP network. It can help a feed withstand packet loss and jitter by requesting retransmissions and managing the time available for recovery; it can also encrypt media payloads between configured endpoints. It does not guarantee uninterrupted video or a fixed end-to-end delay: results depend on the network, latency budget, endpoint configuration and the rest of the production chain.

What SRT is—and where it fits

SRT is a transport protocol, not a video codec, encoder, player or complete production platform. It carries media from a sending endpoint to a receiving endpoint, typically as part of a contribution or distribution workflow. The devices or software still handle tasks such as encoding and decoding; SRT addresses how the resulting media travels across the network. Haivision’s Introduction to SRT describes it as adapting to real-time network conditions between endpoints.

That distinction matters when planning a system: both ends need compatible SRT support, and the transport settings must suit the path and production. Adding SRT to one component alone does not make an entire workflow SRT-capable.

How SRT handles packet loss and jitter

Retransmission requests

The SRT project identifies Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) as its primary loss-recovery method. The receiver detects missing data and can ask the sender to retransmit it. If the retransmitted packets arrive in time for playback or processing, this can reduce the effect of packet loss on the received feed. The mechanism is described in the Haivision-maintained SRT project README.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Latency gives recovery time to work

Retransmission takes time: a missing packet must be noticed, requested, sent again and received. SRT manages latency so a receiver can accommodate network variation and recovery. A tighter latency budget leaves less time for a round trip; a more forgiving budget can leave more room for retransmission, but increases delay. The usable setting therefore depends on the path’s loss and jitter as well as the production’s tolerance for delay.

Other recovery and redundancy options

The project README also lists Forward Error Correction (FEC) and connection bonding as supported capabilities. They are additional design options, not features that should be assumed active in every SRT stream or device. Whether they are available and appropriate depends on the implementation and the reliability design you need.

SRT’s project describes the protocol as a sub-second live transport protocol. That is a protocol-level description, not a promise of sub-second glass-to-glass delay for every workflow. Encoding, decoding, network routing, buffers, SRT latency settings and receiver processing all contribute to total delay. The official material cited here does not establish one universal latency setting, benchmark or maximum recoverable loss. See the Haivision introduction and the project README for their descriptions of the protocol and its mechanisms.

What SRT encryption protects

The SRT project says it implements AES encryption to protect media-stream payloads. Haivision describes encryption across contribution and distribution on its SRT product page. In practical terms, treat this as protection for the stream payload between configured endpoints—not as encryption of every part of a production system.

SRT encryption does not by itself secure endpoint computers, protect exposed credentials, control who can access a receiver, or replace sound key and passphrase handling. Protect endpoint access and credentials separately, and verify that encryption is enabled and configured as intended at both ends.

What determines reliability and delay in practice

SRT can improve the odds of a clean feed on an unpredictable network, but it cannot make a weak connection unlimited or guarantee that every lost packet will be recovered. Recovery is useful only when the path and available time allow the retransmission to arrive before the receiver needs the data. Reliability and immediacy are therefore a design trade-off, not independent outcomes.

  • Latency tolerance: Account for the whole path, including encoding, decoding, SRT’s configured latency and downstream buffers—not just the transport segment.
  • Path behavior: Consider expected packet loss, jitter and bandwidth variation. A configured recovery mechanism cannot compensate without limit for a severely impaired or undersized path.
  • Recovery design: Decide whether retransmission meets the need or whether the implementation’s FEC or connection-bonding capabilities should be considered.
  • Endpoint capability: Confirm SRT support and compatible configuration at the sender and receiver before planning around the protocol.
  • Security operation: Confirm how each endpoint configures encryption and protects its passphrase or other access credentials.

How to evaluate an SRT implementation

  1. Map the media path. Identify which device or application sends the feed, which receives it, and where encoding, decoding and downstream buffering occur.
  2. Verify both endpoints. Check that each endpoint supports SRT and that the implementations interoperate with the settings your workflow requires. SRT is available as open-source software, including sample utilities such as srt-live-transmit in the project repository.
  3. Set a delay target for the production. Establish how much end-to-end delay the use case can tolerate, then account for processing and buffering around SRT. Do not treat the protocol’s sub-second description as a guaranteed result.
  4. Assess the network path. Estimate the likely loss, jitter and bandwidth variation. Use those conditions and the delay target to decide whether retransmission alone is suitable or whether additional supported recovery or redundancy is needed.
  5. Check encryption and access handling. Confirm the endpoints’ encryption configuration and protect credentials and endpoint access independently.
  6. Choose software or hardware based on the workflow. The open-source library and sample applications may be relevant where software endpoints fit. Haivision documents SRT support on its Makito X Series encoders and decoders; see its Makito SRT documentation. That confirms a hardware example, not that dedicated hardware is necessary for every deployment.

Documentation can change by software version. Haivision’s SRT documentation index identifies the documentation page as version 1.5.3 and notes version 1.5.4 as latest; check the current documentation for implementation details before configuring a deployment.

Common SRT planning problems

Problem Why it happens What to check
One endpoint cannot establish an SRT connection The relevant sending or receiving endpoint may not support SRT, or the endpoints may not be configured compatibly. Verify SRT support and configuration at both ends; check the product or software documentation for the specific implementation.
Packets are still missing or playback is impaired Loss may exceed what the path and recovery time can handle, or retransmitted data may not arrive in time. Review path loss, jitter and bandwidth variation alongside the latency budget; consider whether a supported FEC or bonding design is warranted.
Delay is higher than expected End-to-end delay includes more than SRT: encoding, decoding, routing, configured transport latency and other buffers all contribute. Map the full signal chain and inspect its processing and buffering rather than attributing all delay to the transport protocol.
The stream is encrypted but the workflow remains exposed Payload encryption does not protect endpoint machines, credentials or access controls by itself. Review endpoint security, passphrase handling and access permissions in addition to SRT encryption settings.

Where StreamNeo fits—and where it does not

StreamNeo addresses a different need from SRT: it keeps uploaded videos running as a 24/7 YouTube live stream from the cloud. It is not an SRT contribution transport for a live camera feed. For a channel that needs uploaded recordings looped continuously, the workflow is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once and go live; StreamNeo then runs the loop in the cloud, so a home computer does not need to stay on. See StreamNeo for product details.
