Solana’s performance design is a coordinated pipeline, not a single speed trick. Proof of History provides verifiable ordering and elapsed-time evidence; validators still reach consensus. The network forwards transactions toward scheduled leaders, spreads block data for reassembly, and uses declared account access to run compatible transactions concurrently.
What is Proof of History in Solana?
Proof of History (PoH) is a sequential cryptographic hash process that creates evidence of ordering and of time passing between events. Solana’s terminology describes a stack of proofs in which each proof shows that data existed before a later proof and that a duration elapsed. The transaction confirmation guide describes a chain of recursive SHA-256 hashes. Solana Documentation’s terminology and the transaction confirmation guide explain the mechanism.
That evidence helps validators reason about the sequence of events, but it does not replace consensus. Validators still need to agree on the ledger’s valid state and history; PoH is part of the system’s ordering and timing design, not a standalone consensus protocol. The distinction matters: a verifiable clock-like sequence can help coordinate work, but it does not by itself decide which ledger history the network accepts. Solana’s 2018 whitepaper provides historical context for the design.

How does Solana process transactions?
A Solana transaction carries one or more instructions, signatures, and a recent blockhash. An instruction identifies a program and supplies the accounts and data it needs. Programs are executable code; mutable state is held in separate accounts passed to instructions. This separation makes account access visible to the runtime. See Solana’s Core Concepts documentation and Transactions documentation.

At a high level, a transaction passes through a sequence of checks and execution stages before changes are committed. Solana’s documented pipeline names eight stages:
- Receive: the validator receives the transaction.
- Signature verification: signatures are checked.
- Sanitization: the transaction’s structure is checked and normalized.
- Budget and age checks: the transaction is checked against execution-budget rules and whether its recent blockhash remains valid.
- Fee payer validation: the account paying the fee is checked.
- Account loading: the required accounts are made available to execution.
- Instruction execution: the runtime invokes the requested programs.
- Commit: successful state changes are recorded.
This pipeline is why “fast” is not one operation: receiving, checking, loading state, executing code, and committing results are distinct work. The Transaction Pipeline documentation describes these stages.

Atomicity and recent blockhashes
Instructions within a transaction execute atomically: if an instruction fails, the transaction’s state changes are reverted, although fees may still be charged. A recent blockhash helps make a transaction fresh rather than indefinitely reusable. Solana Documentation currently lists a 1,232-byte maximum for the documented transaction format, 4,096 bytes for v1, and a recent-blockhash expiry of 150 slots. These are protocol limits as documented on 2026-10-07; they may change as the protocol evolves. Consult the Transactions documentation for the applicable format and current rules.

Because transactions identify the accounts they read and write, the runtime can determine when their state access does not conflict. Transactions operating on independent state can be executed concurrently. If multiple transactions need to write the same account, that shared mutable state creates contention and limits how much of their execution can safely happen at once. This is an architectural consequence of the account-access model, not a guarantee of a particular throughput.

Sealevel is the name used in Solana’s historical architecture material for its parallel runtime. Parallelism applies across compatible transactions; instructions inside one transaction are processed sequentially in the documented runtime pipeline. The older 2019 architecture explainer discusses Sealevel, while the current pipeline documentation lays out transaction processing.
How do transaction forwarding and block propagation differ?
Solana’s historical explainers describe two network mechanisms that address separate tasks. Gulf Stream forwards transactions toward expected upcoming leaders, rather than relying on a large conventional pending pool. Turbine is the historical name for a block-data propagation approach in which a leader distributes data through downstream validators for reassembly. In short, forwarding helps transactions reach leaders; propagation helps validators receive block data.

These mechanisms are complementary, but neither promises a fixed latency or throughput. Gulf Stream was described in a Solana Foundation article published June 19, 2019. Turbine and the broader architecture appear in historical Solana explainers from 2018 and 2019. Those articles explain design concepts; they should not be read as current measurements of live network performance.

Applications need to account for the network and state model, not just their program logic. Transactions must be built with the required accounts and a valid recent blockhash, and application design should avoid unnecessary contention on shared writable accounts where possible. A transaction that cannot be confirmed before its blockhash expires may need to be rebuilt and submitted again with a fresh blockhash.

Production applications also need reliable RPC access. Solana says its shared public RPC endpoints are not intended for production applications; developers should review its RPC overview and production-readiness guidance when planning infrastructure. That is an operational consideration, separate from the protocol’s consensus and execution design.
What the design does—and does not—establish
Solana’s architecture joins timing and ordering evidence, validator consensus, leader-aware transaction delivery, block-data dissemination, and account-aware execution. Each addresses a different part of transaction processing. Together they explain the intended design, but they do not establish a current transactions-per-second result, a latency guarantee, or a ranking against other blockchains. Historical testnet claims are not current mainnet measurements.
