There is no single sensitivity number for TNT detectors. A trace detector’s limit of detection depends on the specific instrument, the compound, operating conditions, and how residue is collected and measured. In security screening, the usual approach is to collect particles from a surface on an instrument-compatible wipe and analyze that sample—not to detect TNT remotely from any nearby object.
How TNT trace detection works
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes a common trace-screening workflow: an operator collects particles from a person or item using a sampling wipe, then inserts the wipe into a handheld or benchtop detector. The detector thermally desorbs material from the wipe and analyzes the resulting chemical signals. The exact workflow and equipment depend on the instrument and screening program. NIST’s Trace Contraband Detection program describes this approach.
A positive identification is a screening signal, not by itself a complete forensic conclusion or proof of intent. NIST says a positive result may lead to additional screening or denial of entry to a facility or venue; the response is a matter for the relevant security authority.
How sensitive are TNT trace detectors?
Sensitivity is expressed through a limit of detection (LOD), but an LOD only has meaning for a defined analyte, detector, operating setup, sampling method, and measurement protocol. A result for one detector or compound cannot be assumed to apply to another, and a low advertised figure alone does not establish that a system is best for a particular screening task.

NIST notes that reliable detection and identification of trace contraband below 1 μg can matter for public safety and security. That is broad trace-contraband context, not a TNT-specific threshold or a performance claim for any particular detector. A 2019 NIST publication says commercial trace detectors can measure signals from nanogram-sized analytes in complex matrices; it likewise does not establish a universal TNT limit. The publication’s abstract discusses the measurement method and its application.
What LOD90 means
ASTM International’s 2026 test method, E2677-26a, defines LOD90 for a particular trace detector using both a sample and a process blank. It is the lowest mass of a compound deposited on a sampling swab for which there is 90% confidence that a single measurement has at least a 90% true detection probability for the analyte and at least a 90% true non-detection probability for a blank. Those confidence and probability values are parts of the metric’s definition, not a promise that every field test will achieve the same result.

- At-home infidelity test (2 min): Presumptive semen detection via initial detection of acid phosphatase (AP), a semen indicator – results in approximately 2 minutes.
- Easy to use sperm detection test: Moisten the stain, apply the test strip, wait, and compare the colour to the colour guide on the package. An ideal infidelity test for home use.
- Versatile semen presence test: The semen detection test detects the presence of semen on textiles, bedding, ceramics, and paper; also suitable for old or dried stains.
- Forensic-style method (home screening): Inspired by forensic analysis (presumptive AP method); like any at-home semen presence test, a positive result requires laboratory confirmation.
- Contents & discreet packaging: 10 test strips, a spray bottle (fill with water), and instructions for use – shipped in discreet packaging.
For a meaningful comparison, check whether figures were produced under the same method and conditions, including the analyte, detector model and mode, sampling medium, and replicate measurements. ASTM’s E2677-26a standard is the current cited method for estimating limits of detection in trace detectors for explosives and drugs of interest. NIST also provides a page describing its E2677 calculator and software, but lists that software as version 2018/09; consult the current standard rather than treating the software page as the latest edition. NIST’s LOD resource explains the calculation tool.
Why the lowest detection limit is not the whole answer
Real-world usefulness depends on more than detecting a small amount under controlled conditions. NIST identifies selectivity and response variability, as well as sensitivity, as factors that affect practical detection capability. A system must distinguish its target from relevant interference and produce dependable results in the conditions where it is used.

ASTM E2520-26 evaluates detector performance using a broader framework that includes analyte performance, identification value, and effective throughput. Throughput considerations include sampling rate, sampled area, and estimated maintenance over a typical eight-hour shift. ASTM states that a score of at least 80 represents minimum acceptable performance within that practice’s framework; it is not a universal deployment guarantee or a substitute for an agency’s application-specific procedure. See ASTM E2520-26 for the standard’s scope and criteria.
ASTM notes that explosive trace detectors may use technologies such as ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) or mass spectrometry (MS). The technology label alone does not establish a device’s TNT sensitivity: the instrument, target, operating parameters, and evaluation method still matter.

What to check when comparing detectors
- Target and instrument: Confirm that the stated result is for TNT, the exact detector model, and the operating mode being considered.
- Test basis: Look for the sampling medium, test conditions, replicate measurements, and whether the result follows ASTM E2677’s LOD90 method.
- Reliability and selectivity: Consider blank performance, response variability, and the ability to distinguish the target under realistic deployment conditions.
- Operational fit: Compare sampling rate, area examined, and maintenance needs, not just the smallest reported mass.
- Identification and procedure: Check what the detector can identify and whether its evaluation matches the agency’s intended use.
- Consumables: Use only sampling wipes or swabs compatible with the specific instrument and its validated procedure; a generic wipe cannot be assumed to work.
Limits and safe use
The cited NIST and ASTM sources explain trace measurement and detector evaluation; they do not identify a best commercial detector or establish a model-by-model TNT limit. The appropriate system and operating procedure depend on the deployment setting and local requirements. For professional testing, consult the current applicable standard and a qualified laboratory or agency procedure. ASTM E2520 explicitly does not address every safety concern and does not replace application-specific procedures.
