Researchers made single-crystal ε-iron by taking an indirect route: they first formed γ-iron at high temperature, then compressed it further to transform it into ε-iron. The crystals let the team analyze how the material responds in different directions. In the reported measurements, vibrations traveled 4.4% faster along one crystal axis—a result that may help explain seismic anisotropy in Earth’s inner core, but does not by itself reproduce the conditions or composition of the real core.
Why make ε-iron as a single crystal?
Iron changes its crystal structure under different pressure and temperature conditions. The high-pressure phase discussed in the study is ε-iron, which is associated with the solid inner core. To measure its structure and elastic properties in detail, researchers needed single-crystal material rather than a sample made up of many differently oriented crystals.
The challenge is that transforming ordinary, ambient-pressure α-iron directly into ε-iron disrupts the single-crystal structure. The team, led by Agnès Dewaele and B. Amadon, used an intermediate phase to avoid that problem. Chemistry World’s report on the study describes the approach and its results.
How did the researchers make the crystals?

Start with α-iron. The researchers began with iron in its ambient-pressure α phase.

Form γ-iron. Using a diamond anvil cell, they compressed the sample to 7 GPa and heated it to around 800 K to induce γ-iron, a phase stable only at high temperatures.

Compress further to form ε-iron. Additional compression transformed the γ-iron into ε-iron while retaining a single-crystal form suitable for analysis.

This α-to-γ-to-ε route contrasts with a direct α-to-ε transformation, which the report says inevitably destroys single crystals. Dewaele explained: “Single crystal ε-iron is challenging to form [directly from] ambient α-iron because the transformation which creates it inevitably destroys single crystals.” She added: “[Rather than attempt] a direct transformation, we went through a third phase (known as γ-iron), stable only under high temperatures, and this way we could keep the samples under a single crystal form”.
What did the measurements find?
X-ray analysis revealed direction-dependent elasticity: vibrations traveled 4.4% faster along one axis of the ε-iron crystal than along another. This is a measurement of the synthesized crystal, not a direct measurement of seismic waves in Earth’s inner core. The accessible report does not give uncertainty bounds for the 4.4% figure.

To interpret the measurements, the team paired density functional theory with dynamical mean-field theory. The combined calculation accounts more fully for strong electron interactions in iron, and Chemistry World reports that it reproduced the experimental result.
How could this relate to seismic waves in the inner core?
Earth’s inner core behaves anisotropically: seismic waves travel at different speeds in polar and equatorial directions. Jie (Jackie) Li, a mineral physicist at the University of Michigan, described the phenomenon this way: “The Earth’s inner core behaves anisotropically, meaning it exhibits different properties in different directions,” and “As a result, seismic waves travel through the inner core at different speeds in the polar and equatorial directions.” The University of Michigan’s 7 August 2023 release reproduces Li’s explanation.

Finding directional differences in ε-iron’s elasticity offers a possible material-level explanation for that seismic anisotropy. It is supporting evidence for a proposed connection, not proof that pure ε-iron alone accounts for the inner core’s behavior. The real core is an iron-nickel alloy and may contain other elements, so its composition and conditions are not fully represented by the reported crystal measurements.

- Established in the report: a route to single-crystal ε-iron, X-ray analysis of its properties, and direction-dependent elasticity with a reported 4.4% difference in vibration speed along one crystal axis.
- Not established by that result alone: that Earth’s inner core is pure ε-iron, that the crystal’s 4.4% difference equals the core’s seismic anisotropy, or that the experiment fully reproduces the alloyed core’s conditions.
The primary paper is A. Dewaele and B. Amadon, Physical Review Letters 131, 034101 (2023), DOI 10.1103/PhysRevLett.131.034101. The detailed methods and uncertainty estimates are not available in the cited reporting, so conditions beyond those reported above should not be inferred from it.
