Scientists can distinguish some engineered nanoparticles from similar natural particles by measuring several elements in each particle and comparing the resulting chemical fingerprints. A 2017 study demonstrated this approach for engineered cerium oxide nanoparticles in soil; it is a research method, not evidence of a general-purpose detector for every nanoparticle or environmental sample.
Why engineered nanoparticles are hard to spot
Soil contains naturally occurring nanoscale particles, which can resemble engineered particles in both size and composition. A measurement showing that a particle contains a particular element may therefore be insufficient to determine whether it was deliberately manufactured or came from the natural environment. In the study’s example, engineered cerium oxide (CeO2) had to be distinguished from naturally occurring particles containing cerium and lanthanum.
The challenge is attribution: detecting a particle is not the same as identifying its origin. The natural background can be much more abundant than the engineered particles researchers are looking for.

The 2017 paper, “Single-particle multi-element fingerprinting (spMEF) using inductively-coupled plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ICP-TOFMS) to identify engineered nanoparticles against the elevated natural background in soils,” describes a method that combines single-particle analysis with ICP time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Rather than relying on one isotope, the instrument measures multiple elements simultaneously for each particle. Researchers can use the combination of those signals, including elemental ratios, as a multi-element fingerprint.

The team paired those measurements with a machine-learning algorithm trained using well-defined standards representing both engineered and natural particles. The trained workflow then uses the multi-element information to classify particles against the background. The method’s usefulness thus depends not only on measuring several elements, but also on having standards that represent the particle types being distinguished.
What changes compared with single-isotope analysis
| Approach | Information used | Implication for distinguishing particle origin |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional single-particle ICP-MS in the reported setting | Focused on one isotope | A single signal may not separate natural and engineered particles when they are similar. |
| Reported ICP-TOFMS multi-element fingerprinting | Several elements measured simultaneously for each particle; fingerprints are evaluated with an algorithm trained on standards | Additional elemental signals provide more information for attribution, provided the standards represent the relevant particle types. |
This is an increase in distinguishing information, not a guarantee that every particle can be classified correctly. The study summaries do not give quantitative false-positive rates, limits of detection, matrix-effect measurements, or performance across other nanoparticle types.

What the soil demonstration showed—and what it did not
The demonstration concerned engineered CeO2 nanoparticles in soil, where the researchers sought to distinguish them from similar naturally occurring cerium- and lanthanum-containing particles. University of Vienna co-author Frank von der Kammer explained the reported capability with an illustrative example: “you can have 10,000 nanoparticles and only 1 engineered nanoparticle, and still show it.” That quote describes the study’s central idea; it is not a universal detection limit or a quantified validation statistic.
The study supports a specific conclusion: multi-element single-particle measurements can help identify engineered particles in a challenging natural background in the reported test case. It does not establish that the approach works unchanged for every engineered material, soil, or other environmental matrix, or under all field-monitoring conditions.

- Comprehensive Soil Analysis: Liquid soil test kits offer a comprehensive analysis of essential soil parameters, including pH, ammonia, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Having all these measurements in one kit provides a holistic understanding of the soil's fertility and health.
- Customized Fertilizer Recommendations: With data on pH and nutrient levels, liquid soil test kits help users apply the right type and amount of fertilizers, optimizing plant growth, and preventing over-fertilization, which could harm both plants and the environment. Whether its for lawns, garden, grass, plants, vegetables, turf, flowers, compost trees vines ornamental landscape house plants or hydroponics you will be able to get the results you want.
- Time and Cost-Effective: Liquid soil test kits are relatively quick and easy to use, saving time for gardeners and agricultural professionals. Compared to sending samples to a laboratory, these kits provide rapid results, allowing for prompt action. Additionally, they are cost-effective for routine testing, making it feasible to monitor soil health regularly.
- Optimal Plant Health and Yield: By knowing the soil's pH and nutrient levels, gardeners and farmers can fine-tune their agricultural practices to create an environment conducive to optimal plant growth. Adequate levels of ammonia, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are essential for healthy plant development and higher crop yields.
- Accurate and Precise Results: Liquid test kits are designed to provide accurate and precise measurements when used correctly. They are calibrated to detect specific nutrient levels, ensuring reliable data for informed decision-making in plant nutrition and soil management. You get a total of about 140 test. which is 40 test for each parameter and about 20 or so for nitrogen
What is known about availability and regulatory use
The paper and contemporaneous accounts date from 2017. They describe a research approach and a prototype spICP-TOFMS instrument, but do not establish current commercial availability, routine monitoring adoption, or present regulatory status. They also do not identify a consumer-ready detector, kit, or product recommendation. Jorg Feldmann of the University of Aberdeen called the technique urgently needed by policy makers and regulators; that was an expert’s view in 2017, not evidence that regulators have since adopted it.
